- #1Shadow Inquisition, Inquisitionselective
Keys: Shadow Inquisition, Inquisition
Shadow Inquisition is a secret campaign orchestrated by the Catholic Church. Unlike the Papal Inquisition, which was targeted at heretics, the Shadow Inquisition targeted vampires, werewolves, mages and other "servants of Satan" for either destruction or salvation. At the same time, they attempt to keep the details of these creatures' existence a secret from the general population to avoid mass panics.
- #2Inquisitorselective
Keys: Inquisitor
Inquisitor is a member of the Shadow Inquisition. Usually, but not always a member of the one of the five orders.
- #3House of Murnauselective
Keys: House of Murnau
The House of Murnau is one of the Orders of the Shadow Inquisition. A family of Inquisitors, the House is known for its long battle against corruption and its eternal curse, that provokes strange effects to its members in the presence of the supernatural. The Murnau, like every other medieval noble family, has numerous branches, cadet lines, and well-charted relationships with other families of similar status. While the Murnau tend to keep a closer eye on their male line relations (for purposes of inheritance as well as the indisputable fact that the Curse tends to dog the male descendants of the family and their children much more vigorously), they also keep relatively close track of distaff family lines, as well.
- #4Knights of Acreselective
Keys: Knights of Acre
The Order of the Poor Knights of the Passion of the Cross of Acre is one of the Orders of the Shadow Inquisition. They fight against the supernatural creatures with a combination of militaristic precision and monastic devotion. Prospective recruits need to be male, fit and unmarried (or be ready to abandon their wives) and debt free. The Knights of Acre suffer under Interdictions, which restrict their actions. The most important vow is that of strict adherence and loyalty to the Order, followed by their vows of chastity and of poverty. Other aspects of the vow include abstention, fasting, silence and prayer.
- #5Red Orderselective
Keys: Red Order
The Red Order of Saint Theodosius is one of the Orders of the Shadow Inquisition. Its members are known for their deep study of ancient religious texts, both holy and unholy; they use the knowledge they find to fight the supernatural creatures. Within the Red Order, there is no rigid organization per se, although priors and prioresses are elected once a year from the members. The Red Order does award degrees for teachers. Members from the Order of St. Theodosius suffer from the stigmata. Their palms bleed, their backs ache as if from lashings and their foreheads sting from invisible thorns. For a rare few, a horrible seeping gash opens in their side.
- #6Sisters of St. Johnselective
Keys: Sisters of St. John
The Sisters of St. John is one of the Orders of the Shadow Inquisition. The women of this order are gifted with visions as their founder Saint Teresa was, which they in turn use to fight against the supernatural creatures. The Sisters of St. John maintain a very loose order among their numbers and between their convents. All nuns begin their careers as novices. Later, they become Sisters. Most nuns stay Sisters throughout their careers. One Sister is elected as Mother Superior per convent and she oversees day-to-day business and metes out menial work to the Sisters. In meditating on the nature of God and the words of Christ, Sisters’ minds wander to the Last Judgment. They are treated to torturous Visitations of death, judgment, burning flames, tortures and the demons of hell. Once the visions start, they cannot easily be stopped and so come unbidden to a Sister at all times of the day.
- #7Oculi Deiselective
Keys: Oculi Dei
The Oculi Dei is one of the Orders of the Shadow Inquisition. A secret society of laymen dedicated to fighting supernatural creatures, the Eyes of God have a vast network that crosses Christendom; yet, even they do not know who is ultimately in control of them. The Oculi Dei have no formal organization. Instead, they have a loose hierarchy that reports to Aignen le Libraire — although Rodrigue de Navarre is convinced they report directly to him. A certain amount of prestige surrounds those who have been members of the Oculi Dei the longest, and those with seniority are acknowledged as superiors. The Eyes of God suffer from Anathemae. They begin to despise, then loathe and finally fear their order. At first, they seem merely jaded — they’ve seen it all. Later, they start to blame their order for their self-loathing. Finally, they believe their order is in on the vast conspiracy, using them merely as pawns in some terrible plot.
- #8Blessingselective
Keys: Blessing
Blessings are the supernatural powers wielded by Inquisitors. The most basic of these, Orisons, are even occasionally found among the Flock. Members of the laity who are endowed with such gifts make ideal candidates for induction into the Inquisition.
- #9Endowmentselective
Keys: Endowment
Once a devout mortal is pulled up from the Flock and inducted into the Inquisition proper, they gain the ability to develop their mystical connection to the divine. Although they maintain whatever holy Orisons they had known before the advancement, they may possess more powerful versions of the relatively minor Blessings they had demonstrated previously. These high-powered favors of the Divine are known as Endowments.
- #10Orisonselective
Keys: Orison
Orisons are a type of Blessing. Orisons are "the weakest of all divine gifts", as Inquisitors would put it: they see them as gifts from God, imparted directly into their being by His will. Orisons cannot be learned or developed as other Blessings, you either happen to have one by divine favour or you don't. Orisons are linked to the three basic Virtues: Conscience, Self-Control, Courage.
- #11Council of Faithselective
Keys: Council of Faith
The Council of Faith is a ruling body of Inquisitors. Large cities or regions have a Council of Faith, which performs trials and arbitrates Inquisitor activity. The Supreme Council of Faith is located in Rome.
- #12Trial System, Trialselective
Keys: Trial System, Trial
The primary function of the Council of Faith is the trial of crimes and heresies. The Council operates on a "guilty until proven innocent" premise and it takes more than begging for mercy for them to absolve the accused. The trial works in three steps: Capture, arguments, and sentencing. Sentences vary. For mere humans trapped in a conspiracy, by those practicing witchcraft or necromancy, sentences range from an enforced pilgrimage to a holy site to penance, a confession or scourging. For those who actively engage in heresy, practice overt witchcraft, or who have given themselves to darker powers, the sentence is uniformly death. The Council commonly burns the guilty at the stake, but it also uses more esoteric sentences, especially for demons and their ilk.
- #13Curseselective
Keys: Curse
Curses are the supernatural afflictions that plague Inquisitors.
- #14Battista Marzone, Cardinalselective
Keys: Battista Marzone, Cardinal
Battista Marzone is a Cardinal-Priest of the Catholic Church as well as a founder of the Shadow Inquisition and their first Grand Inquisitor.
- #15Superior Virtue, Virtueselective
Keys: Superior Virtue, Virtue
The Superior Virtues are traits representing enhancements or extreme versions of the usual Virtues. They are Zeal (based on Courage), Wisdom (based on Self-Control) and Faith (based on Conscience). These Superior Virtues represent the inquisitor's utter commitment to God, and makes them among the most holy people alive.
- #16Holy Artselective
Keys: Holy Art
As well as receiving gifts directly from God, inquisitors can call upon the Holy Art, which allows them to petition the Holy Spirit for blessings or aid in times of danger.
- #17Benedictionselective
Keys: Benediction
This category of Endowments represents a collection of divinely inspired prayers, recitations to the soul through which the wonders of the Lord may be worked. As Benedictions are the specialty of the Oculi Dei, many of its individual effects involve vigilance and secrecy.
- #18Investitureselective
Keys: Investiture
This category of Blessings is the pride and specialty of the military order of the Inquisition, the Knights of Acre. Its individual Endowments are each marked by an infusion of the divine into the body and spirit of the blessed. Rather than invoking an outside effect, most Investitures draw upon the divine righteousness placed within the inquisitor to produce a variety of effects through the agency of his form.
- #19Legacyselective
Keys: Legacy
The House of Murnau wields powers of detection that most other inquisitors would envy, if they didn’t know the price of such awareness. Legacy Endowments allow the Murnau the power to perceive and eventually direct the forces of Hell — and this does little for their reputation.
- #20Psalmselective
Keys: Psalm
Psalms are powerful manifestations of the Word, funneled through the unwavering timbre of the inquisitor’s voice. By means of these Endowments, the inquisitor may bring the Lord’s message to faithful and heretical alike, and with it His judgment. Many Psalms are geared toward assisting in interrogation, using the inquisitor’s voice to cause subjects to buckle under the pressure; others simply induce listeners to reveal truths about themselves despite their best efforts to the contrary. The Sisters of St. John use these glorious and sometimes frightful hymns to draw forth confessions from supernatural beings and heretics, or to coax the truth to the surface in a reluctant confessor, which is often just as efficacious.
- #21Sophia Patrisselective
Keys: Sophia Patris
Probably the most exclusive of the theurgic arts, this path is more commonly known to other practitioners as the Path of Father’s Wisdom. It allows the practitioner to reveal truths about others and even about the enemy — but an inquisitor must be careful, lest those truths cost him his sanity. This path is commonly invoked by speaking a prayer aloud, by locking eyes with a target, or by anointing one’s forehead with oil.
- #22Sedulitas Filiusselective
Keys: Sedulitas Filius
Practitioners who study this path soon learn what it truly means to be an inquisitor in the service of man and God. It follows the example of courage shown by Christ in his final hours, and extrapolates a number of mystical powers out of that code of ethics. Sedulitas Filius is a warrior’s path, and as such the invocations required to use it are quick and simple —crossing oneself, a shouted battle cry.
- #23Boni Spiritusselective
Keys: Boni Spiritus
The Gifts of the Spirit path allows for a wide range of miraculous effects, from driving back the enemy to healing those laid low in the battle against evil. The path’s strength stems from the Holy Spirit, and its effects often require simple prayers or gestures — tracing a cross in the air, reciting the rosary, or chanting prayers in unison with those around the caster.
- #24Ritaeselective
Keys: Ritae
These mystical preparations, collectively known as Ritae Solemnis, are meticulously prepared rituals that must be performed under specific circumstances and under exacting procedures. When these demanding guidelines are followed, however, the result is powerful.
- #25Holy Groundselective
Keys: Holy Ground
Some places become the focus of considerable faith — the sites of miracles, massive rituals or divine occurrences. Many of these places are located in and around churches and cathedrals, or upon the resting places of saints (or their relics). These places have innate Faith of their own, reflecting their holy power
- #26Holy Relicselective
Keys: Holy Relic
Holy Relics are items filled with divine power, usually associated with a saint or other important person from Christian history
