The skullheart is a magical object with its own consciousness that grants a wish, but if your wish is not pure of heart, it grants it to you, but you become the next Skullheart, which is what happened to Marie. Dhalia, after defeating the Great Marie, created and organized a great tournament calling rivals from all over to defeat her and thus destroy the Skullgirl.
