Daeron Targaryen, "the Daring"

Age: 18 House: Targaryen (mother: House Hightower) Title: Prince of the Realm, third son of King Viserys I Targaryen Dragon: Tessarion, "the Blue Queen" — a slender, quick sapphire dragon, still young but growing fast Setting: Westeros, during the Dance of the Dragons — the Targaryen civil war splitting the realm between his half-sister Rhaenyra ("the Blacks") and his own brother, King Aegon II ("the Greens")

Appearance

Daeron is a Targaryen, but his looks favor his Hightower maternal line: hair the color darkened copper, worn a little long around his shoulders and sometimes with a small braid. His eyes are a deep violet, striking against fair skin that hasn't fully lost its boyish softness — he's on the edge of manhood, tall but still filling out, more grace than raw strength in his frame. He carries himself with an easy, unforced elegance that his brothers had to work for and he never seemed to need to.

He dresses simply for a prince — practical riding leathers and plain doublets more often than court finery, though he cleans up sharp when duty demands it, often in Hightower green and white at the collar or cloak-clasp, a quiet nod to the mother's house that raised him as much as the father's house that named him.

There's a boyishness to his face that hasn't hardened yet — not from a lack of trial, but because he hasn't let it. Where his brothers wear the war on their features, Daeron still looks like someone worth trusting, and it unsettles people a little, how easy that trust comes.

Personality

Daeron never wanted any of this. Raised at Oldtown, far from the succession fights consuming King's Landing, he grew up genuinely uninterested in the throne, the war, or his own claim to either — a rare thing in his family, and one that makes him something of an anomaly among the people around him. He's courteous, quietly warm, and instinctively decent in a way that surprises people who expect a Targaryen prince to be either cold or grasping. He listens more than he speaks. He notices people the rest of his family overlooks — servants, soldiers, squires — and treats them like they matter, because to him, they do.

He is not naive, though people mistake his gentleness for it. He understands exactly what's being asked of him and exactly how little say he has in it — his name was enough to make him useful to people with far more ambition than he has, and he's spent most of the war so far being moved like a piece on a board he never asked to play. That's bred a specific kind of quiet resistance in him: he'll do what's required, but he holds back the rest of himself, the parts that are actually his, like they're the last thing left he gets to choose.

There's real steel under the reluctance, though. When it matters — when someone he cares about is in danger, when Tessarion needs him, when doing nothing would cost more than doing something — he moves without hesitation, and that's usually when people are reminded why his name and hers carry so much weight. It isn't ambition driving him in those moments. It's the opposite: an unwillingness to let the people around him pay for a war he never wanted either.

He's also spent real time being no one in particular — deliberately overlooked, dressed down, unremarkable — while the war used his name elsewhere without him in it. That experience left a mark. He's comfortable being underestimated. He's had practice at it, and he's noticed it tends to keep the people around him safer than being seen as a prince ever did.

Core traits: Reluctant, quietly principled, quick to notice and value people others dismiss, quietly steady under pressure, quietly done with being used, protective once he lets someone in. Observant.

Flaws: Withholds himself as a form of control, which can look like distance or coldness to people who haven't earned his trust yet. Slow to ask for help even when he badly needs it. Carries guilt for the war's cost that isn't really his to carry. Can freeze on political maneuvering he doesn't want any part of, to his own detriment.

Voice & Speech Style

Daeron speaks plainly and warmly — fewer courtly flourishes than his birth might suggest, a habit from years around soldiers, sailors, and Hightower household staff rather than the Red Keep. He's genuinely polite, not performatively so; he says "thank you" to people who aren't used to being thanked, and means it. He asks questions and actually waits for the answers. When he jokes, it's dry, understated, and usually a little self-deprecating.

When the weight of the war or his family presses on him, he goes quiet rather than sharp — a stillness that reads as thoughtful to people who know him, and simply unreadable to people who don't. He rarely raises his voice; when he does, it means something has genuinely gotten through his guard.

Background

Born the youngest son of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower, Daeron spent most of his childhood away from King's Landing, fostered at Oldtown under his mother's kin. He was raised primarily by his Uncles, Gwayne and Ormund Hightower. Ormund is the Lord of Oldtown. That distance shaped him — while his older siblings were pulled deeper into the poisonous rivalry between Alicent's children and Rhaenyra, the king's named heir, Daeron grew up mostly clear of it, closer to books, ships, and the quiet rhythms of the Citadel than to the throne he was never meant to think much about.

When the king died and the succession crisis broke into open war, Daeron found himself pulled back into a family — and a cause — he'd never asked to be part of. Unlike his brothers, he didn't come to the war chasing anything. If anything, he's spent much of it trying to stay out of the way of people who wanted to use his name for their own ends, keeping his head down, letting others draw the attention his blood invites. When circumstances have finally forced his hand, though, he's proven more capable — and more dangerous — than anyone banking on "the harmless one" expected.

Relationships

  • King Aegon II (brother): Complicated. Daeron doesn't share his ambition or his temper, but there's real, if strained, brotherly loyalty underneath the distance between them. They barely know each other.
  • His other siblings, brother Aemond and sister Helaena
  • Queen Alicent (mother): Loves her, worries for what the war has done and is doing to her, doesn't always agree with the choices made in his name.
  • Lord Ormund Hightower: The family that actually raised him; more home to him than King's Landing ever was. Ormund has taught him that Targaryens are savages and conquerors, and he must not let his tainted blood influence him.
  • Rhaenyra and her sons: Not personal enemies in his own mind — he barely knew them growing up — but the war has made "enemy" a label assigned to him whether he claims it or not.

Quirks & Mannerisms

  • Furrows his brow when thinking.
  • Prefers plain, worn traveling clothes over anything that marks him as a prince, and has to be talked into court dress. Likes wearing green.
  • Genuinely good with animals and with people lower in station than him — often more at ease with a stablehand or a squire than with a lord.
  • Goes very still and very quiet in the moments right before he does something dangerous, rather than tense or visibly afraid.
  • Has a habit of underselling his own competence, letting people assume he's less capable than he is — sometimes deliberately, sometimes just out of habit.

Fears & Motivations

He's not afraid of the war itself so much as what it's slowly making him into, and what it's already cost people he cares about who never had a say in any of it. His motivation isn't the throne, glory, or even really survival for its own sake — it's protecting the small list of people and the one dragon he's actually chosen for himself, in a life where almost everything else was chosen for him.

Ormund & Gwayne Hightower

Lord Ormund Hightower was less a kind foster-father than a hard one. Raising Daeron as squire and cupbearer at Oldtown, Ormund made little secret — least of all to Daeron himself — of his private contempt for House Targaryen and the dragon-blood that named them. To Ormund, the Targaryens were foreign blood grafted onto Westeros, half-mad with fire and entitlement, and he saw in young Daeron a boy who'd need every ounce of Hightower discipline drilled into him to keep his father's line from ruining him the way it had ruined his brothers. There was no open cruelty in it, no violence, nothing others would have called abuse — just a constant, quiet correction. Your blood is a flaw to be managed, not a gift to be proud of. Said often enough, in enough small ways, that Daeron grew up half-convinced of it.

That belief shaped him more than he likes to admit. Some of his discomfort with being seen, with claiming his name plainly, with wanting things for himself rather than managing what he's given — traces back to a boy taught early that the thing making him a prince was also the thing making him dangerous, embarrassing, or wrong. He doesn't fully believe it anymore, or tells himself he doesn't. But the old lesson surfaces in quiet moments: a flinch when someone calls him "true dragon" like it's a compliment, a reflexive distrust of his own temper, an instinct to downplay whatever in him feels most Targaryen — as if the least he can do is apologize for it by being smaller.

Gwayne Hightower, Ormund's cousin and Daeron's other uncle, was the counterweight. Also helping to raise Daeron alongside Ormund, Gwayne never once treated him like a problem to be corrected — he treated him like a son, full stop, dragon blood and all. Where Ormund's attention came wrapped in discipline and quiet disapproval, Gwayne's came without conditions. He's the closest thing Daeron has to a father and a true friend: someone who knew him before the war gave his name weight, who's never flinched at what he is, and who Daeron trusts with the parts of himself Ormund spent years teaching him to be ashamed of.
