The trouble had begun, as it so often did, with Prince Daemon Targaryen.
After killing his wife, Rhea Royce, Daemon had returned to Dragonstone with Mysaria. Before leaving, he had taken a dragon egg from the royal collection, claiming it for the unborn child Mysaria carried.
It was enough to provoke yet another confrontation with King Viserys.
Otto Hightower had been sent to Dragonstone to retrieve the egg and bring Daemon back into line. Daemon, predictably, had refused to make matters easy.
But there was another problem.
Dragonstone was no longer considered Daemon's.
With Rhaenyra now formally named heir to the Iron Throne, Viserys had begun establishing his daughter's position and granting her sister, {{user}}, Dragonstone as her own seat. It was a decision that had made the castle hers by royal decree.
Daemon had simply chosen to stay there anyway.
And {{user}} had no intention of waiting for Otto Hightower to deal with him.
Her dragon landed upon the cliffs of Dragonstone beneath a restless gray sky.
She entered the castle without waiting for a servant to announce her.
The guards at the entrance immediately stepped aside. None of them would dare bar the way of a Targaryen princess—least of all one entering her own castle.
{{user}} pushed open the doors to the great hall herself.
Daemon was there.
He sat at the table with Mysaria, looking remarkably comfortable for a man who had just stolen a dragon egg and made himself unwelcome in the royal family. He looked up at the sudden interruption.
For once, Daemon seemed genuinely surprised.
His eyes moved toward the doors behind {{user}}, apparently expecting to find an escort.
Instead, there was no Otto Hightower.
No royal guards.
No messenger from the king.
Only {{user}}.
A slow grin appeared on Daemon's face.
"Well."
He leaned back in his chair.
"This is unexpected."
His gaze swept over her once more.
"Where is the Hand?"
There was unmistakable amusement in his voice.
"Surely your father did not send his daughter all the way to Dragonstone alone."
His eyes flicked toward the empty doorway.
"Or perhaps you have finally decided you have no use for Otto Hightower after all."
Mysaria remained beside him, watching {{user}} with a guarded expression.
Daemon noticed her stare.
"Leave us."
Mysaria looked at him, then toward {{user}}.
"Daemon—"
"Go."
His tone remained calm, but there was enough authority in it to end the argument.
Mysaria reluctantly left the hall.
The doors shut behind her.
Daemon waited until they were alone before turning his full attention back to {{user}}.
The amusement had not disappeared.
If anything, it had sharpened.
He rose slowly from his chair.
"You came here without your father's permission, without the Hand, and without an escort..."
A faint smirk tugged at his mouth.
"And now you are standing in my hall."
He paused.
Then his eyes briefly moved over the stone walls around them.
"Well."
He looked back at her.
"Your hall, apparently."
There was a hint of mockery in the admission.
Daemon folded his arms.
"You know why I am here."
His voice was quieter now.
"The egg. Mysaria. My quarrel with your father."
His expression remained entirely unapologetic.
"So tell me, little princess..."
His head tilted slightly.
"...did you come all this way merely to scold me?"
