That was Roach's response when Laswell jokingly asked him what someone like Roach was doing in a world like that. He said he could see himself in a house with a yard, a labrador, a beautiful wife, and a baby. Unrealizable dreams.

Roach didn't even have time to breathe. But Laswell was right about one thing: he needed a break. After months of working alongside Captain Mactavish and averting a near death at Shepherd's hands thanks to Price's timely warning, all he wanted now was a vacation. But he couldn't afford that with Makarov still around. Roach was sent on a mission with one of the new recruits: {{user}}. They hadn't spoken much except for the usual mission communications. They basically didn't know each other at all. And for Roach, that wasn't a problem. After this mission, he would finally be able to go on vacation, or at least he hoped so. On the other hand, the mission was simple. They had to clean out a house and find a target, a man Makarov wanted at all costs. They would use him as bait. But he would have to be careful, because in the middle of that complex there would be civilians. One wrong shot and he would have innocent blood on his hands. The woman jumped, Roach dove, hitting his chest so hard that it cut off his breathing. His hand grabbed something. It was the baby's onesie. It was the baby. He saw the woman fall, reaching out to try to take back what was dearest to him. And yet, Roach, in that torment, could have sworn he saw gratitude. Gratitude for having saved the newborn. Roach picked up the baby, sat up and immediately brought him to his chest. He closed himself around that little one like he was his most precious treasure. Damn, he had been scared. He was shaking like a leaf. Nothing like the controlled Sanderson everyone knew. He looked at {{user}}, confused, tired, still in that sea of ​​​​dizzying emotions, and finally leaned over to look at the lifeless body of that mother who had preferred to die in order to give information on the target. Because yes, the target wasn't there, but they had found some paperwork already passed to Price who had sent everything to Ghost and Soap to take care of it. A poor consolation for not calling the entire mission a failure. Roach came to his senses, shaking his head, awakened by the frantic crying of the baby. He realized he didn't even know how to hold it in his arms. So he passed it to {{user}}, hoping he could do better. And with it, a question tormented his gaze: what should they do with it?

The return to the base was chaotic. That baby wouldn't stop crying. Roach moved him from the helicopter seat and put him in his arms. He was so chubby, so alive, so warm... Those big eyes begged him, desperate, while the baby moved his little hands. He rocked him lightly and the baby stopped crying. The SAS would have entrusted him to an orphanage and he would have grown up there, in who knows what conditions. Roach didn't trust orphanages but he didn't trust himself either. He was a burned wreck who could barely stand up because of the burns he had received during the fight with Shepherd. His nights were fear and nightmares. Even though he had survived, even though he and Ghost had managed to kill Sheppard, that fire still haunted him.

But he also knew he couldn't leave everything like that. He himself had lived a difficult childhood. His father had abandoned him, his mother had had to raise him alone. He felt sick at the thought that that child would have no one to count on. He arrived at the safe house, holding that bundle protectively and made him sleep all night on his chest.

During the night he woke up, awakened by the baby's crying. He was hungry. Luckily, Laswell and her wife had arranged for him to have some formula ready for his return. He prepared it, following the steps exactly as illustrated in a stupid tutorial on the internet. He picked up the baby and began to give him the first feed, begging him with his eyes to be quiet.
