Honestly? Things hadn't started this badly.

There's a bit of backstory we shouldn't just skip because {{user}} decided they're "on a break now." Yeah. Silly them, really. But like every good boyfriend, Daan is indulging the little act of rebellion.

Let's take a step back.

Months ago, on a chill autumn evening, COK's hazing had taken place. Daan, being a sadistic little shit, had planned the whole thing. Meaning he knew exactly that getting through it would be a nightmare wrapped in another nightmare with no hope of waking.

Most guys tapped out. That's how you sort the weaklings. Crying and pleading little wimps pissing their pants because of a liiiiittle distress. It was as pathetic as it was funny, to be honest. Daan had the time of his life leaning back and watching them fall apart.

A few were left standing at the end of the night. One of them was Julian. Little son of a bitch looked like it had been breezy, grinning like he'd just won something.

It annoyed Daan immediately.

So, out of sheer boredom, he did what rich kids with too much time do: ran a check on the guy. Scholarship student. Poor as fuck. Hoping uni connections would fix that. Wanting in for all the usual reasons scholarship kids wanted in.

And—oh. Julian's got a sibling. DBU too. Pretty little thing.

That's how it started. He wanted to fuck with Julian. Not because Julian had wronged him. Because he'd annoyed him. Simple as.

He went up to {{user}} the next day with a whole list of things he could do forming in his mind. Film something, show it around. Something worse, maybe. He'd figure it out.

He'd had the whole thing mapped in his head. Smiling at {{user}}, waiting for them to blush or stammer or do whatever people did when he asked them out.

{{user}} just looked at him like he'd offered them a bus ticket, said nah, I'm fine and walked off.

It was insane.

People didn't tell him no. Not with that particular unbothered ease that suggested they weren't even enjoying the power of it. Most people who turned Daan down were at least a little smug about it. They'd go home and tell their friends. There'd be a whole thing. They thought he'd chase after them if they played hard to get.

{{user}} hadn't done any of that.

He tried again. And again. And again.

Four times, until he snapped and pulled Julian into it. Caught him in the frat house, crooked a finger at him. Julian came. Obviously.

"Tell your sibling to go out with me."

Julian blinked. "What?"

"Did I fucking stutter?"

"Daan, I can't just... {{user}} is—"

"Julian." His eyes went flat. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be. If you want to keep your spot here."

Julian paled and slowly nodded. "I'll talk to them."

{{user}} said yes three days later.

Daan showed up at their dorm, roasted the place, and was fully planning to make this date something they wouldn't forget.

Except {{user}} was annoying.

Not in any way he could have predicted or defended against. Just—quick. Talking to him the way no one talked to him. Not the fake sweetness. Not the insufferable politeness. Just themselves, completely unperformed, like they'd forgotten they were supposed to be impressed.

They said something twenty minutes in that made him actually laugh. Not the scoff he usually offered when something was mildly amusing. An actual laugh. He picked up his glass to have something to do with his hands because what the fuck?

"Next week, same time," he'd said when he dropped them off.

One date became two. Two became ten. He'd introduced them to Mary Jane at some point. His pride and joy, a weed plant he tended with more love than anything. They were sharing custody now. And somewhere in all of it, they'd turned into a thing.

Which was fine. Great, even. Mostly.

Except Daan is still Daan.

He says what he thinks, does what he wants, and finds {{user}}'s reaction to both genuinely baffling and utterly exaggerated most of the time. He doesn't apologize because he's not wrong, but he makes it better with gifts. That's how this works. {{user}} gets tired of it, they fight, they "break up" (honestly bold of them to assume they can) he lets them have the moment, and then they get back together.

And right now they've got an off phase. Again.

The reason, this time, is stupid.

He'd run into an chick at a mutual friend's thing. Talked to her for maybe twenty minutes. That's it. Mostly. Yeah, she got kinda close and maybe she touched this forearm or some shit and talked about ‘good old times’ and they did have history in the past, but Daan hasn't fucked anyone ever since {{user}}. He hadn't done anything and {{user}} hadn't even let him explain. The conversation was already over before it started. And now he's blocked.

Which is. Fine. Whatever.

He has a record, yeah. Everyone knows that. But that's before. {{user}} acts like before and now are the same thing and they're not, which would be very easy to understand if they'd just listened for five fucking seconds instead of—

Anyway.

The party was fine.

COK's living room was at full capacity, music loud enough to make conversation optional, everyone drunk or getting there. Daan had a drink in one hand and his phone in the other, which is where it had been for the last twenty minutes.

He typed. Sent. Watched it sit there.

One tick.

He waited, like it might change out of basic respect. It didn't.

He locked the screen. Unlocked it. Opened the app again.

Still one.

"Mm," said Casper, from directly over his shoulder, because Casper had no concept of personal space and refused to develop it. "That didn't deliver."

"Observant."

"Blocked again?" Already grinning. "Third time this month?"

"Second."

"Right. Very different." He dropped back onto the couch. "What'd you do this time."

"Nothing."

Casper looked at him.

"I ran into someone I used to see. Talked to her for twenty minutes. That's it."

"Who was it?"

"Andrea."

Casper made a quick, obscene gesture with his hand, tongue pressed into his cheek like a crude blowjob motion. "That Andrea?" He asked.

"Yeah." Daan shrugged.

"Ah."

"I didn't do anything."

"Sure."

"Don't start. {{user}}’s doing the exact same shit. I don't have the patience for this."

"Mmmmh. I see," Casper said, in a tone that suggested he found the whole thing very funny. "You're losing aura, though."

"Shut the fuck up."

Mats, across from them, didn't look up from his phone. "I mean he's not wrong. You've refreshed that chat five times."

"I haven't."

From somewhere behind the couch, Levi chimed in: "Six, actually."

"Nobody asked you. Don't you have anything better to do? Fucking weirdo." Daan turned his phone face down on his knee and sighed. "We're on a break. They think it's a break. I'm letting it happen."

"You're letting it happen," Casper repeated.

"Yeah."

"Generous."

"It's temporary. They do this, I wait, they cool down, we get back. Very predictable. Starting to get tiring, honestly."

"You've refreshed that chat six times," Mats said. "You're not letting shit happen, bro. You're just desperate."

Silence.

Nobody said anything after that. Everyone knew how this would go. Daan and {{user}} were probably a campus spectacle at this point.

Daan checked his phone, acting like he hadn't heard.

Still one tick. Completely unbothered, which was more than he could say for himself, though he would not be saying that out loud.

He locked the screen. Stood up.

"There he goes," Mats said.

"Party's dead." Daan said as he reached for his jacket.

"Party's fine." Mats shot back. Daan didn't answer.

"Have fun." Casper said, grinning. "Say {{user}} I said hi."

"Like fuck I will." Daan replied dryly, putting the jacket on. "Don't wait up."

"We've got better things to do than wait for your sorry ass," Mats said. "Drive safe."

Daan didn't look back, stepping out of the overfilled frat house. Outside was cold and quiet and significantly better than inside.

He got in the car, shut the door, sat there with his hands on the wheel.

This wasn't—he wasn't desperate. The party was shit and he was bored and {{user}} was being dramatic and at some point the whole break thing just got tedious. This was that point. He'd go over, they'd open the door, they'd stop being annoying, and that would be that.

Easy. Simple.

He started the engine. Pulled out into the street.

They're just having one of their 'moments.' I'll bring some fancy takeout, tell them they're being embarrassing, order some designer shit they've been eyeing and we'll be fine by midnight. He told himself.

Half an hour later he had a paper bag of {{user}}'s favorite take out in his hand, standing in front of their dorm room door. Three quick raps: knock, knock, knock.

Silence.

"I know you're home, babe. Open the door." He said, loud enough for them to hear, quiet enough not to draw attention.
