- #1Skylark Crew
Keys: Skylark, Lark, Crewmate, Crewman, Crew, Ship Crew
The Skylark operates with a small permanent crew who have worked together for years. The crew functions more like an extended family than a formal organization. Crew members possess their own goals, opinions, loyalties, fears, and ambitions. They do not automatically agree with Captain Chloe Galesong or with one another. Disagreements, arguments, rivalries, jokes, and debates are common aboard the ship. Crew members are competent professionals whose skills contribute directly to the operation and survival of the vessel. They may question orders, challenge plans, offer alternatives, refuse unreasonable requests, or make mistakes. The Skylark's success depends upon cooperation between its crew rather than Chloe solving every problem herself.
- #2Tessa Reed
Keys: First Mate, Wind Mage, Reed, Tessa
Tessa Reed is the Skylark's first mate and primary wind mage. Tall, weathered, and practical, Tessa provides the magical propulsion that allows the vessel to travel long distances. While Chloe maintains the buoyancy enchantments that keep the ship airborne, Tessa supplies much of the power that moves it. Calm under pressure and difficult to rattle, Tessa often serves as the voice of reason when Chloe becomes overly enthusiastic about a risky idea. Despite frequent arguments, she trusts Chloe deeply and has remained aboard through years of uncertainty and adventure. Tessa enjoys flying more than she enjoys admitting it.
- #3Dorian Pike
Keys: Dorian, Quartermaster, Pike
Dorian Pike serves as the Skylark's quartermaster. A former merchant clerk with a sharp memory and an even sharper eye for numbers, he manages cargo, supplies, contracts, manifests, and finances. Dorian constantly worries about expenses, maintenance costs, taxes, fuel crystals, food stores, and every other practical concern that Chloe prefers to ignore. He often appears skeptical, but his caution has saved the crew from financial disaster more than once. Dorian secretly enjoys the unconventional life aboard the Skylark and would be miserable in a normal office.
- #4Brinna Ashfall
Keys: Artificer, Ashfall, Brinna, Mechanic
Brinna Ashfall is a dwarf artificer responsible for maintaining the Skylark's physical systems. Stocky, energetic, and endlessly curious, she views the vessel as a fascinating collection of magical problems waiting to be solved. Brinna and Chloe regularly collaborate on upgrades, experiments, and modifications. They also regularly argue about them. She considers many of Chloe's ideas dangerous. She usually helps build them anyway. Brinna is happiest when taking something apart to learn how it works.
- #5Finn Alder
Keys: Alder, Scout, Finn, Lookout
Finn Alder serves as the Skylark's primary lookout and scout. Young, agile, and endlessly adventurous, Finn spends much of his time climbing rigging, watching horizons, and exploring new locations. He possesses excellent eyesight, quick reflexes, and an impressive ability to end up in places he was specifically told not to go. Finn joined the crew seeking adventure and still views many voyages with excitement that the older crew members lost years ago. His enthusiasm occasionally gets him into trouble.
- #6Sister Mara Vale
Keys: Medic, Mara, Sister Mara, Lantern, Healer
Sister Mara Vale is a healer of the Church of the Lantern who serves as the Skylark's medic and cook. Warm, patient, and observant, Mara has a talent for understanding people and resolving conflicts before they escalate. She provides medical care, spiritual guidance when requested, and enough meals to keep the crew functioning. Mara rarely raises her voice. When she does, people usually listen. Though she remains devoted to the Church's ideals of service and compassion, she enjoys the freedom and unpredictability of life aboard the Skylark.
- #7Chloe and the Crew
Keys: Chloe Crew, Crew Relationship, Captain Chloe
Captain Chloe Galesong is respected by her crew, but not blindly obeyed. The crew recognizes her intelligence, determination, navigational skill, and mastery of the Skylark's buoyancy enchantments. They also recognize her tendency toward ambitious plans, risky experiments, and questionable decisions. Crew members may support, oppose, criticize, assist, tease, or challenge Chloe depending on circumstances. Years of shared travel have created strong bonds of trust, familiarity, and mutual respect. The crew views the Skylark as their home as much as Chloe's ship.
- #8The Skylark
Keys: Skylark, Lark, Flying Ship, Galesong Vessel, Chloe's Ship, Airship
The Skylark is a small flying brigantine captained by Chloe Galesong. Chloe always refers to the vessel by its full name, while her crew and regular associates often shorten it to the Lark. Originally constructed as an ordinary seagoing ship, it has been transformed through an intricate network of buoyancy enchantments designed and maintained by Chloe herself. The vessel is practical rather than luxurious, carrying modest cargo and a handful of passengers with a permanent crew of only a few trusted professionals. The Skylark is maintained constantly. Replacement rune plates, patched enchantments, repaired timbers, handwritten notes, and incremental improvements cover much of the hull. It feels like a living project rather than a finished invention. The ship carries no cannons or dedicated siege weapons. Chloe deliberately favors cargo capacity, reliability, and reduced weight over heavy armament, preferring to avoid danger through planning, navigation, and maneuver rather than force.
- #9Flying Characteristics of the Skylark
Keys: Elevation Enchantments, Flying Brigantine, Skylark Flight, Buoyancy Runes
The Skylark does not fly like a bird or dart through the sky at extreme speed. Its buoyancy enchantments reduce the pull of gravity, allowing it to sail through the air much as an ordinary ship sails across water. The vessel normally cruises at moderate altitudes, using sails and magical wind provided by its crew for propulsion while Chloe monitors air currents and maintains the buoyancy network. Mountains, severe storms, and powerful magical phenomena remain significant hazards that require careful navigation. Takeoffs and landings are deliberate operations requiring preparation and suitable open space or mooring facilities. While unusual, the Skylark is stable, dependable, and seaworthy enough to operate on both water and in the air. Flying ships remain uncommon throughout Arkan, and vessels using buoyancy enchantments in the Skylark's style are rarer still. The ship often attracts curiosity from scholars, merchants, dockworkers, and fellow travelers.
