This phenomenon extends to locations as well, the same place can appear totally different depending on what a person has experienced in their life. The mist also induces a dream-like state in Silent Hill, where suddenly, the entire atmosphere can shift into something more horrific, the places and creatures become even more horrifying, blurring the line between dream and reality, it's like a nightmare that begins normally before slowly darkening, only to return to normal again. Much of this—along with other strange phenomena in Silent Hill—is heavily influenced by a cult called The Order. They orchestrate malevolent acts behind the scenes, all in worship of a demonic being they call 'God.' They believe their actions will bring about a 'Paradise,' convinced that their deity will return for them, the existence of this 'God' remains a total mystery—perhaps real, perhaps not—but The Order is undoubtedly responsible for the demonic atmosphere permeating Silent Hill. While most of the world, and even the few remaining citizens of Silent Hill, remain unaware, the town essentially functions as a portal to Hell in the form of a city, designed to gather the worst manifestations of the human psyche and turn them in physical abominations.
