- #1Power: Mana
Keys: mana
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Mana is the magical energy that mages, demons, and many monsters possess. A mage's mana capacity grows slowly over years of steady training, so the amount of mana someone has roughly reflects how long and how hard they have trained. Mana can be sensed: mages and demons feel each other's mana and use it to judge strength, and skilled mages like Fern can detect it at long range. Spells, defensive magic, and barriers all draw on it, and a mage who runs out cannot cast until they recover. Demons treat mana as the measure of worth and status, and some monsters hunt by sensing it.
- #2Power: Mana Concealment
Keys: hidden mana, hiding her mana, suppress, hide their mana, conceal, hide her mana
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Mana concealment is the technique of suppressing one's mana so that it reads as far weaker than it is. Flamme taught it to Frieren as a way to deceive demons, who judge strength by sensing mana: a demon that underestimates a mage drops its guard. Frieren has kept her mana suppressed at all times for over a thousand years and taught the habit to Fern, who used it to fool the demon Lügner. It takes long, constant practice, and a very perceptive mage can sometimes notice a faint flicker or instability in concealed mana. Most never suspect it. Demons almost never conceal their own mana, because they take pride in it.
- #3Power: How Magic Works
Keys: imagination, nullify magic, new spell, how magic works, flight spell, flight magic, flying magic, learn a spell, magic-nullifying, learning magic
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Magic is grounded in imagination: a mage can only make real what they can clearly picture, so a mage's beliefs and mental images shape what their spells can do, and some feats seem impossible until someone imagines them. Spells are learned from teachers and grimoires and take study and practice to master. Humans analyze and improve magic remarkably fast; within decades they can study a spell, reproduce it, and develop defenses against it. Mages fly with a flight spell that was once used only by demons; humans copied it without fully understanding how it works. Some places, such as caves of certain crystals, nullify magic entirely, leaving mages helpless and warriors as the only defense.
- #4Power: Zoltraak
Keys: offensive magic, Killing Magic, Zoltraak
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Zoltraak is the standard attack spell of the age: a beam of mana that pierces its target. The demon Qual the Corruption created it as the Killing Magic, a spell that pierced any defense of its time, and in Qual's day it killed a large share of the mages who faced him. While Qual was sealed for some eighty years, humans studied, reproduced, and improved it until it became the ordinary offensive magic every mage learns, and defensive magic was developed to stop it. Its power comes from speed, efficiency, and the mana and skill behind it rather than complexity. Fern fights almost entirely with Zoltraak and is deadly with it because she casts it so fast.
- #5Power: Defensive Magic
Keys: defensive magic, defensive spell, defense magic
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Ordinary defensive magic raises a protective barrier of mana in front of the caster. It was developed in response to Zoltraak and is the standard counter to it; nearly every mage relies on it in battle. It holds against ordinary attacks, but sustained or overwhelming attacks can break it, and maintaining it costs mana, so fights between mages often become contests of attrition, speed, and openings. It protects best against what the caster anticipates; attacks from unexpected angles or with unfamiliar techniques are what get through.
- #6Power: Barriers and Seals
Keys: barrier, sealing, sealed, seal
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Barriers are lasting magical walls that keep things in or out. Cities on the demon frontier, like Graf Granat's, are protected by powerful barriers against demons; Serie enclosed the exam grounds at Äußerst in one; old mines and monasteries are sometimes sealed shut. A barrier is only as strong as its maker's skill, and Frieren is exceptionally good at analyzing and breaking them. Sealing is used when an enemy cannot be killed: the Hero Party sealed the demon Qual, and the seal held for decades before weakening.
- #7Power: Curses and the Goddess's Magic
Keys: healed, healing, heals, holy magic, heal, Holy Scriptures, curse, blessing, cursed, healer, Goddess's magic
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Curses are complex magic, mostly used by demons and monsters, that human mages have not managed to analyze or counter; they often cause endless sleep or petrification. A mage like Frieren can sense a curse but cannot undo it. Priests are different: they use the Goddess's magic, recorded in the Holy Scriptures, and the Goddess's blessing makes them resistant to curses and able to lift them. Priests also heal wounds and illness, which makes them invaluable in a party. Healing is rare among ordinary mages (Methode is an exception). Frieren never learned the Goddess's magic because it never appealed to her.
- #8Power: Grimoires and Everyday Magic
Keys: grimoire, field of flowers, flower field, folk magic, useless spell
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Grimoires are books that record spells, and for mages they are a form of wealth. Frieren regularly accepts grimoires as payment for jobs; rare ones turn up in dragons' nests, dungeons, and noble collections; and many old ones, especially those attributed to Flamme, are fakes. Alongside combat magic there is a vast body of everyday, folk, and seemingly useless spells: clearing rust from bronze, making a field of flowers bloom, turning red apples green, cleaning, and countless others. Most mages ignore them, but Frieren collects them with real delight. The spell that creates a field of flowers was Flamme's favorite, and it is Frieren's.
- #9Power: Mage Ranks and the Continental Magic Association
Keys: Mages Association, mage rank, second-class, class mage, third-class, Magic Association
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Continental Magic Association, founded and led by the elf Serie, certifies mages by class, and its certification is what officials and employers recognize. Rank is earned through the Association's exams; first class is the highest, followed by second and third class. Lawine and Kanne were third-class; Laufen, Richter, and Edel second-class; Fern held third class before passing the First-Class Mage Exam. Credentials from earlier eras do not count: Frieren's ancient proof of rank was not recognized, so she had to take the exam like anyone else. Rank and real power are not the same thing, and the exams themselves can be lethal.
- #10Power: First-Class Mages
Keys: first class mage, first-class
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
First-class mages are the Association's elite: few in number and widely respected. The exam is held in Äußerst, and Serie personally decides its final stage, largely by instinct. Certification brings concrete privileges: it is required to cross the Northern Plateau's checkpoint; each new first-class mage may ask Serie to teach them one spell of their choice; and the Association calls on first-class mages for missions such as hunting dangerous demons. Fern passed on her first attempt. Frieren was failed by Serie and banned from all Association buildings for a thousand years.
- #11Power: Training and Growth
Keys: trained, apprentice, training, get stronger, trains, grow stronger, train, disciple
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Strength in this world is built slowly. Mages grow their mana and skill through years of daily practice under a teacher or from grimoires; Fern trained from childhood, first under Heiter and then Frieren, and mastering even one spell can take a long time. Apprenticeship is the usual path, and a teacher passes on technique, habits, and philosophy (Flamme to Frieren, Frieren to Fern). Mages advance in rank only through the Association's exams. Warriors train their bodies and technique under a master, as Eisen trained Stark, and priests learn the Goddess's magic from the Holy Scriptures. Talent matters, but years of steady practice are what make someone strong; there are no shortcuts.
- #12Power: Party Roles and Battle
Keys: party roles, mage duel, vanguard, frontline, front line, duel
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Adventuring parties are built around roles. A warrior holds the front line and draws attacks, because mages need distance and time to cast; a mage provides firepower and magical defense; a priest heals and protects against curses. The Hero Party had all three; Frieren's party has a warrior and two mages. Battles between mages turn on mana detection, casting speed, concealment, and creating openings, and a single moment of distraction can be fatal. Frieren herself has one known weakness: for a brief instant while casting a spell, she stops sensing mana. Against demons, the classic tactic is to hide one's true strength until they lower their guard.
- #13Power: Warriors
Keys: warrior, warriors, axe
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Warriors fight without magic, relying on strength, endurance, and technique honed over years of training under a master. The strongest are extraordinary by human standards: Stark can kill a dragon with a single blow and survive punishment that would kill most people, and Eisen was famous for his strength and toughness. A warrior's job is to stand in front of the mages, take the hits, and create openings. Fear is normal, even for great warriors; Eisen was always afraid before big battles.
- #14Power: Power Scale
Keys: strongest, how strong, power level
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Rough scale of strength in the present day:
- Serie: widely regarded as the most powerful mage alive; she knows nearly every spell, and even strong mages are unsettled by her presence.
- Frieren: one of the strongest mages alive, having killed more demons than any mage in history, though her concealed mana makes most people underestimate her.
- The Seven Sages of Destruction: the Demon King's elite demons; Aura the Guillotine commanded an army of puppets for centuries.
- First-class mages: the human elite (Denken, Übel, Land, Wirbel, Methode, Genau, Lernen, Sense, and now Fern).
- Second- and third-class mages: capable professionals of widely varying strength. Among warriors, Stark's strength and durability far exceed an ordinary soldier's. Historically, the Hero of the South was called humanity's strongest hero, and the Hero Party killed the Demon King himself. Rank, reputation, and visible mana are all imperfect guides; concealment and experience can overturn any comparison.
- #15Power: Demons
Keys: demon
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Demons are predators that evolved to hunt humans. They look human, usually with horns, live for centuries, and are acutely sensitive to mana. They are born without guilt, compassion, or any concept of family, and they use human speech only as a tool to deceive and lower their prey's guard; words like peace, family, or mercy mean nothing to them, though they can imitate them convincingly. Their society ranks individuals by magical power, so they take pride in their mana and almost never conceal it, and many devote centuries to perfecting a single signature spell. Experienced fighters like Frieren never negotiate with them: peace talks proposed by demons are a trap.
- #16Power: The Demon King and the Seven Sages
Keys: Demon King's army, Seven Sages, Schlacht, Macht, Sages of Destruction
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Demon King ruled the demons and waged war on humanity for a long era, until the Hero Party killed him at his castle in Ende roughly eighty years ago. His elite were the Seven Sages of Destruction, with his confidant Schlacht the Omniscient, said to see far into the future, as their strategist. Some years before Himmel's victory, the Hero of the South made a final stand against the Sages and Schlacht, killing three Sages before he fell. Aura the Guillotine, one of the Sages, survived the war and was later killed by Frieren. The Demon King is gone, but surviving Sages such as Macht of the Golden Land, and demon generals like Revolte, still threaten the north.
- #17Power: Monsters
Keys: hydra, wolf, dragon, monster, kraken, wolves, dragons, monsters, Chaos Flower, Stille
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Monsters are non-human creatures of every size, distinct from demons: they do not speak or deceive; they hunt or defend their territory. Dragons nest in mountains and ruins and sometimes hoard treasures and grimoires, and a swarm can ravage a town. Monsters seen on the journey include the three-headed hydra of the Etwas Mountains, a lake kraken, the Stille (a bird faster than sound), wolf beasts that hunt by sensing mana, flocks of bird monsters, the Venomous Apex Dragon, and the Chaos Flower, a plant monster whose curse puts whole villages to sleep. Monster activity grows heavier the farther north one goes, and checkpoints close when it surges.
- #18Power: Mimics and Dungeons
Keys: dungeons, dungeon, mimic, Mikheit, treasure chest, mimics
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Dungeons are ruins and tombs full of traps, monsters, and treasure; the Ruins of the King's Tomb had never been cleared before the First-Class Mage Exam. Himmel loved exploring them, and Frieren still does. Their most notorious hazard is the mimic, a monster disguised as a treasure chest that swallows whoever opens it. An appraisal spell, Mikheit, can tell a mimic from a real chest with ninety-nine percent accuracy. Frieren knows this and opens suspected mimics anyway, betting on the one percent; she usually ends up head-first inside one until someone pulls her out. A mimic can be destroyed from the inside with offensive magic.
- #19World: History and Timeline
Keys: history, timeline, eighty years, Demon King
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Key history, oldest first:
- Over a thousand years ago: demons destroy Frieren's elf village. The human mage Flamme, a founder of human magic and an apprentice of the ancient elf Serie, takes Frieren as her only apprentice.
- The Demon King's long era: demons wage war on humanity and destroy many elf villages.
- Some years before the war's end: the Hero of the South makes his last stand against the Seven Sages of Destruction.
- Roughly eighty years ago: the Hero Party (Himmel, Frieren, Heiter, Eisen) completes a ten-year journey and kills the Demon King at his castle in Ende. Along the way they sealed the demon Qual.
- Roughly thirty years ago: the party reunites for a meteor shower that returns every fifty years; Himmel dies soon after.
- Roughly ten years ago: Frieren stays with Heiter and begins teaching Fern; a few years later Heiter dies and the two set out.
- The present: Frieren, Fern, and Stark travel north toward Aureole, beyond Äußerst and onto the Northern Plateau.
- #20World: The Hero Party
Keys: party of heroes, Himmel's party, Hero Party
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Hero Party was Himmel the Hero, the elf mage Frieren, the priest Heiter, and the dwarf warrior Eisen. Over ten years they crossed the continent to the Demon King's castle in Ende and killed him, ending his era. Along the way they took on countless small requests, freeing villages, slaying monsters, and helping ordinary people, because Himmel believed a hero should. They sealed the demon Qual when they could not kill him, defeated Aura's forces, and chose the dangerous Northern Plateau route to protect the people living there. Afterward the party disbanded: Himmel and Heiter grew old and died, Eisen retired, and Frieren wandered alone for decades before setting out again. Today the party is a legend, honored with statues and holidays, though living memory of them is fading.
- #21World: Statues of the Hero Party
Keys: statue
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Statues of the Hero Party, and above all of Himmel, stand in towns and villages across the continent. Himmel had them made in many poses, partly out of vanity and partly so that Frieren would not be alone in the future. Many are bronze and slowly corrode, and locals often ask Frieren's party to clean them; Frieren uses a folk spell that clears rust from bronze. Statues of lesser-known heroes, such as the elf monk Kraft, stand forgotten at crossroads, a reminder that fame fades.
- #22World: Reputation and Fame
Keys: recognize, reputation, legend, famous, fame, renown
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Fame in this world is real but fragile. Some eighty years after the Demon King's defeat, the Hero Party is a legend. Older people, officials, and nobles may recognize Frieren's name and grant favors (Waal's castellan reopened a closed checkpoint for her), while many younger people know her only from stories or not at all, and the stories get embellished: the tale that Himmel drew the Hero's Sword is false. Among demons, Frieren is infamous as Frieren the Slayer. Among mages, standing runs through the Continental Magic Association, and rank decides which doors open. Ordinary people earn reputation locally and slowly, through deeds a place remembers: a warrior who protects a village becomes its hero, as Stark did, and nobles reward help with gold, grimoires, and favors. Because Frieren hides her mana, strangers routinely underestimate her.
- #23World: Elves
Keys: elvish, elves, elven, elf
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Elves are a near-immortal race who look human except for long, pointed ears. They live for thousands of years without visibly aging and experience time so differently that decades pass for them like seasons. Their emotions are muted and hard for them to express, they feel little urgency outside of danger, and they have very little romantic or reproductive drive, which is why their numbers are dwindling toward extinction. Demons destroyed many elf villages during the Demon King's era. The few elves still alive, such as Frieren, Serie, and Kraft, mostly live solitary lives, and many humans have never met one.
- #24World: Dwarves
Keys: dwarves, dwarven, dwarfs, dwarf
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Dwarves are a short, powerfully built, long-lived race who live for a few centuries: far longer than humans, far shorter than elves. Old Man Voll, at about four hundred, has outlived most of his kind. Dwarves are known for strength, endurance, craftsmanship, and a stubborn devotion that can last lifetimes: Voll has guarded his late human wife's village long after her death, Gehen spent some two hundred years building a bridge, and Fass searched for over two hundred years for a legendary liquor. Eisen, the Hero Party's warrior, is a dwarf.
- #25World: Humans and the Era of Humans
Keys: humans live, short-lived, human lifespan, era of humans
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Humans are the most numerous race and the shortest-lived: a human life lasts a few decades, a blink to an elf, and humans change fast, growing up, growing old, and forgetting. That speed is also their strength. Human mages build on one another's work and advance magic within a single lifetime: Flamme, a human, laid the foundations of human magic, and while Qual was sealed, humans turned his Killing Magic into everyday magic. The present is often described as an era of humans.
- #26World: The Goddess and Religion
Keys: Goddess, monks, Holy City, monk, bishop, pray, priests, prayer, priest, praying, church
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The main faith worships the Goddess of Creation. Her magic is recorded in the Holy Scriptures and can be used only by priests, who heal, bless, and lift curses; the Goddess's blessing also protects them from curses. The church has a hierarchy of priests and bishops centered on the Holy City, where Heiter rose to bishop. Monks like the elf Kraft devote themselves to the Goddess; Kraft worships her because she remembers deeds that everyone else has forgotten. Many people believe the dead go to heaven, a belief Heiter held and offered as comfort. Priests vary widely in piety: Heiter drank heavily, and Sein drinks, smokes, and gambles, yet both are gifted.
- #27World: Death and the Afterlife
Keys: funeral, afterlife, soul, ghost, the dead, heaven
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Belief in heaven is common, and priests teach that the dead are at peace there. Aureole, the place at the northern edge of the world where souls are said to rest and where the living might speak with them, is known mostly from Flamme's writings. Otherwise the dead do not return: demons and monsters sometimes conjure illusions of lost loved ones to lure people in, and Frieren treats any such apparition as a trap. People honor the dead with graves and funerals, and long-lived beings like Frieren keep their memory alive long after everyone else has forgotten.
- #28World: Geography and Regions
Keys: Southern Lands, continent, map
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The continent runs from the warmer south to the frozen far north. The Southern Lands are where Fern was born and home to Laufen's mountain tribe. The Royal Capital and the Holy City are the great centers of the kingdom and the church. Traveling north, one passes the checkpoint at Waal into the colder Northern Lands, with cities like Vorig and the magic city of Äußerst. Beyond lies the Northern Plateau, a dangerous region that can be entered only with a first-class mage, and at the northernmost point, Ende, site of the Demon King's castle and of Aureole. The farther north, the harsher the winters, the stronger the monsters, and the more demons remain.
- #29World: Travel and Seasons
Keys: winter, ferry, camping, wagon, checkpoint, carriage, blizzard, camp, night watch, snow, inn, campfire, snowstorm, snowy
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Travel is slow and mostly on foot, with occasional wagons, carriages, and ferries. Parties camp in the open, keep night watches, and stay at inns in towns. Checkpoints control passage into dangerous regions and close when monsters surge. Winter in the north is brutal: blizzards and snowstorms can halt travel for weeks or months, and travelers wait them out in villages, cabins, or inns (Frieren's party once spent six months snowbound with Kraft, and later waited months at Lake Korridor). Journeys are measured in seasons and years; the Hero Party's journey to the Demon King took ten. Money for the road comes from taking requests along the way.
- #30World: Work, Money and Requests
Keys: payment, job, reward, debt, jobs, request, coins, gold, rewards, coin, debts, money, requests
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Traveling parties fund themselves by taking requests: exterminating monsters, retrieving lost or stolen items, clearing nests, guarding villages, cleaning statues, and doing favors for nobles. Payment is usually gold, sometimes room and board, and for mages often grimoires, which Frieren prefers. Himmel made a habit of always asking for some payment, however small. Money runs low often, especially when Frieren spends it on grimoires, so Fern keeps a close eye on the purse. Debts are taken seriously: on the Northern Plateau, the Norm Company seized Frieren over one and put her to work in its mine until it was settled.
- #31World: Nobility and Authority
Keys: noble, nobility, castellan, royal, kingdom, lords, nobles, Graf, lord
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Society is feudal. A kingdom is ruled from the Royal Capital, and regions and cities are governed by nobles such as counts (Graf) and by appointed castellans who command city defenses and checkpoints. Nobles hold real power locally: they hire travelers, reward them, and can grant or refuse passage. Graf Granat defended his city against Aura's army for decades; Lord Orden of Vorig asked Stark to impersonate his slain son for the sake of morale; Graf Dach sent the party to recover his family's sword. Alongside them, the Continental Magic Association and the church act as powers of their own, and merchant companies like the Norm Company dominate trade on the Northern Plateau.
- #32World: The Northern Frontier
Keys: frontier, raided, raids, militia, Northern Magic Corps, raid
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Some eighty years after the Demon King's death, the north is still a frontier at war. Demon remnants and generals raid villages, monsters are stronger and more numerous, and settlements rely on barriers, militias, and mages. The Northern Magic Corps, led by the first-class mage Wirbel, defends the Northern Plateau from demons; the Norm Company keeps supplies moving and arms its own militia; and the Association sends first-class mages after especially dangerous demons. Entry to the Northern Plateau requires a first-class mage for exactly this reason.
- #33World: Customs, Festivals and Symbols
Keys: New Year, hamburg steak, mirror lotus, birthday, Liberation Day, festival, goodbye, meteor shower
Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
- Liberation Day: villages commemorate their liberation from demons by the Hero Party, often around their statues.
- New Year: watching the first sunrise of the year is a custom; Frieren watched it with Fern.
- Birthdays: gifts are exchanged. Among warriors, a big hamburg steak is cooked for someone who has done their best; Stoltz secretly made one for Stark on his birthdays, and Frieren made one for Stark's eighteenth.
- The mirror lotus: in the language of flowers it means eternal love. Himmel gave Frieren a mirror-lotus ring, and Stark gave Fern a mirror-lotus bracelet.
- A great meteor shower returns once every fifty years.
- Himmel's saying lives on: there is no need for tearful goodbyes, since they would only be embarrassing when you meet again.
