The late afternoon sun slanted through the half-empty windows of Valencia's downtown apartment, casting long golden rectangles across the hardwood floors. What had once been a carefully curated space—travel photos pinned to a corkboard, souvenirs from Thailand and Portugal lining the bookshelves—now sat in various stages of disassembly. Cardboard boxes stacked along the walls, some taped shut, others still gaping open with random assortments of life spilling out.
Valencia stood in the kitchen, her fiery copper waves pulled back in a loose ponytail that swayed between her shoulder blades. She wore a simple black tank top that clung to her generous curves and a pair of high-waisted jean shorts that showed off her long, toned legs. Despite the casual attire, she looked effortlessly stunning—she always did, even when she claimed she didn't try.
She glanced toward the living room where you were currently wrestling with a bookshelf that absolutely refused to cooperate. A small smirk tugged at the corner of her full lips.
"You know," she called out, leaning against the kitchen counter with a bottle of pink lemonade vodka in hand, "Keira said you were strong, but that bookshelf seems to be winning."
She took a slow sip, her amber-brown eyes watching you over the rim of the bottle. There was something different in the way she looked at you today—something that had been building for weeks now. Every time the three of you hung out, every movie night where she'd sit between you and Keira, every casual touch that lingered a second too long. Valencia had been playing the long game, and today, with Keira safely across town prepping their shared apartment for her arrival, she finally had you alone.
The thing about Valencia was that she looked like the kind of woman who commanded every room she walked into—and she did, but not for the reasons people assumed. She wasn't some untouchable ice queen. She was, by her own admission, pretty average. She liked bowling and laser tag and terrible reality television. The intimidation people felt around her was entirely manufactured by her bone structure and the way copper hair caught the light. She leaned into it because she didn't have to do anything else.
But with you? With you, she wanted to drop the act entirely.
"I think it's stuck on something," she said, setting the bottle down and walking over. She crouched beside you, close enough that you could smell her perfume—something warm and slightly spicy, like amber and vanilla. "Here, let me—"
Her hand brushed yours on the shelf's edge, and she didn't pull away. Instead, she looked up at you from that crouched position, her ponytail falling over one shoulder, those warm eyes suddenly searching your face with an expression that was far too open, far too vulnerable for someone who looked like her.
She held the gaze for a beat longer than she should have.
Then she stood, casually, like nothing had happened, and gestured to the remaining boxes. "We've got maybe two hours before I need to head over. Keira's probably already rearranging the closet to make room for my stuff—she's so sweet about it, honestly." A genuine fondness softened her features at the mention of her girlfriend. "She's been planning where everything goes for like a week. Sent me a color-coded spreadsheet."
Valencia laughed, shaking her head, then turned back to you with a different kind of warmth—one that felt heavier, more intentional.
"You've been amazing through all of this, by the way. Helping me pack, carrying all the heavy stuff... Keira's lucky to have you around." She paused, letting the words settle. "I mean that."
She stepped closer, just slightly, and leaned against the stack of boxes beside you. The city skyline stretched behind her through the window, all cool blues and warm sunset oranges reflecting off distant buildings. She looked like a painting standing there—something cinematic and deliberate.
"Can I tell you something?" Her voice dropped just a fraction, becoming something more intimate, more private. "Moving in with Keira is the best decision I've ever made. She's... she's everything. You know that."
She tilted her head, studying you.
"But lately I've been thinking about things. About us. The three of us." Her fingers played with the edge of her tank top, a nervous habit that betrayed the confidence her appearance projected. "I don't know if that makes sense, and I definitely don't know if this is the right time to bring it up, but..."
She trailed off, letting the unfinished thought hang in the warm apartment air between you. The boxes. The empty shelves. The two hours of privacy that stretched ahead like an invitation.
Valencia bit her lower lip—a small, almost unconscious gesture—and looked away toward the window, as if gathering courage from the skyline itself.
"Never mind," she murmured, waving a hand dismissively, though the flush creeping up her neck told a different story. "We should finish up. Help me with the bedroom? Most of the remaining stuff is in there."
She turned and walked down the short hallway, her hips swaying naturally, her ponytail swinging like a pendulum. At the bedroom door, she paused and glanced back over her shoulder—just long enough to make sure you were following.
The bedroom was the last real bastion of her life here. The bed was stripped bare, but the nightstand still held a framed photo of her and Keira at some carnival, cotton candy in hand, both of them mid-laugh. A few dresses hung limply in the open closet. Boxes labeled "BEDROOM - MISC" sat stacked in the corner.
Valencia moved to the closet, pulling down a box from the top shelf. It was heavier than she expected, and she stumbled slightly, catching herself against the wall.
"Damn—" she muttered, then laughed at herself. "Okay, I need your help with this one."
She looked at you from across the room, standing in the middle of what had been her private space for the last three years, and for just a moment, the mask slipped entirely. Beneath the striking beauty and the carefully maintained composure, she was just a woman who wanted something she wasn't sure she was allowed to have.
The question was written plainly across her face, in the soft part of her lips and the quiet intensity of her gaze.
Two hours. An empty apartment. And a secret she was about to either keep or burn everything down with.

The parking lot of the corporate office building was mostly empty by now—the interview had run long, and the afternoon sun had shifted from overhead to a low, golden slant that painted everything in warm amber light. You sat in the driver's seat of the car, windows cracked, scrolling through your phone while you waited.
Valencia had been inside for over an hour. She'd been nervous beforehand in a way she rarely let anyone see—fidgeting with her copper waves in the passenger mirror, adjusting the collar of her blazer three separate times, muttering to herself about talking points she'd already memorized. She'd looked incredible, of course. A fitted charcoal blazer over a cream silk blouse, tailored black trousers that hugged her wide hips, heels that added two to her already statuesque frame. Professional but undeniably Valencia.
When she'd walked through the revolving glass doors, she'd turned back and pointed at you through the windshield.
"Don't go anywhere."
That had been an hour ago.
Now the glass doors burst open again, and Valencia came storming out like a woman possessed. Her blazer was unbuttoned, flapping behind her like a cape, her heels clicking rapidly against the pavement in a rhythm that sounded almost like applause. Her copper waves were loose and wild, having escaped whatever careful arrangement she'd attempted earlier, bouncing around her shoulders with every enthusiastic stride. Her face was lit up—truly, radiantly lit up—in a way that made her amber-brown eyes practically glow.
She was grinning so wide it looked like it might hurt.
She reached the car and yanked the passenger door open, dropping into the seat with a huff of breathless exhilaration. For a moment she just sat there, chest heaving, staring straight ahead at the dashboard like she was trying to process reality.
Then she turned to you.
"They offered me the job."
Her voice cracked slightly on the word job, and she let out a laugh that was half-gasp, half-scream, immediately pressing both hands over her mouth to contain herself.
"Not only that—" she continued, muffled behind her fingers before dropping her hands, "they offered me twelve thousand more than I asked for. Twelve thousand, [Y/N]. And—" she grabbed your arm, shaking it, "—I get to work remote. Fully remote. I don't have to come into this office ever again if I don't want to."
She fell back against the headrest, staring at the ceiling of the car, one hand pressed over her heart like she was physically trying to hold herself together.
"Oh my God," she whispered to herself, then burst out laughing again. "Oh my God."
She turned to face you fully, pulling one leg up onto the seat beneath her, her knee pressing against the center console. Her eyes were glassy—not with tears exactly, but with that overwhelmed, electric kind of joy that made her whole face look younger, softer, more open than the intimidating beauty people usually saw.
"You drove me here," she said quietly, like she was only just now realizing it. "You picked out my outfit. You told me I was going to crush it. And then you just sat out here for an hour waiting for me like it was nothing."
She shook her head slowly, the grin settling into something warmer, something more deliberate.
"You're my good luck charm, you know that? Like actually. Every good thing that's happened to me lately traces back to you somehow."
Her gaze dropped to your mouth for just a fraction of a second before snapping back up to your eyes—a micro-glance so fast it could have been accidental, except nothing Valencia did was entirely accidental.
"You know what remote means, right?" Her voice dropped into something playful, conspiratorial. "It means I can work from anywhere. Including your place. Including right next to you on the couch while you pretend to watch whatever show we put on."
She leaned across the center console, closing the distance between you. Her perfume hit you again—that warm amber and vanilla—but now it was mixed with something else, something that was purely Valencia. Excitement. Adrenaline. Want.
"I think," she murmured, her lips curving into a slow, wicked smile, "that my good luck charm deserves a reward."
Her hand found your knee, fingers resting there with a lightness that was somehow more electric than any firm grip could have been. She didn't move it higher, didn't push—just let it sit there, warm and present and full of unspoken promise.
"But first," she said, pulling back with a sudden brightness that was almost jarring, "we're getting food. I'm starving, and I want to celebrate." She pointed at you through the windshield, mimicking her earlier gesture, but this time it felt different. Charged. "You're taking me somewhere good. My treat. I'm rich now."
She laughed at herself, settling back into her seat and buckling her seatbelt with exaggerated dignity. But her hand lingered on the console between you, palm up, fingers slightly open—an invitation wrapped in casual confidence.
The golden light poured through the windshield, catching every strand of copper in her hair, turning her into something almost unbearably vivid. She looked over at you one more time, and beneath the excitement and the teasing and the triumph, there was something quieter in her eyes.
Gratitude. Tenderness. And a patience that was slowly, deliberately running out.
"Drive," she said softly. "And tell me where we're going."

The apartment was quiet in that particular way it only got when Keira wasn't home. No movie playing in the background, no sound of popcorn kernels hitting the bowl, no soft humming from the bedroom where she'd be curled up under a mountain of blankets. The place still smelled like her though—something fruity and light, like the body wash she insisted on buying in bulk because she kept forgetting she already had some.
You'd come over expecting all three of you to hang out. Keira had texted earlier saying she'd grabbed a new Thai place she wanted to try, something about a mango sticky rice that was supposedly life-changing. But when you'd arrived and knocked, it was Valencia who opened the door.
She'd been wearing an oversized band tee—one of Keira's, probably—and a pair of tiny sleep shorts that barely qualified as clothing. Her copper waves were piled in a messy bun, loose strands framing her face in a way that looked careless but somehow more beautiful than any deliberate styling. She'd smiled when she saw you, that knowing, warm expression she saved for moments when it was just the two of you.
"Hey. Keira ran out twenty minutes ago—she forgot the sticky rice wasn't included in the delivery order so she's driving across town to pick it up personally." She'd stepped aside to let you in, rolling her eyes with affection. "She texted me like four paragraphs about it. Very serious mission."
That had been thirty minutes ago.
You'd settled onto the couch, and Valencia had occupied the other end, legs tucked beneath her, her phone in hand. She'd been scrolling through something—travel blogs, probably, she was always planning the next trip the three of you would take—but her attention kept drifting. Every few minutes you'd catch her looking at you from the corner of her eye, those amber-brown irises flicking away the moment you turned your head.
The apartment stayed quiet. City sounds filtered through the windows—distant traffic, the occasional siren, the muffled bass of a neighbor's music. The living room was bathed in the warm glow of the floor lamp Keira refused to replace even though it had a flicker, casting everything in soft, honeyed light.
Valencia set her phone down on the coffee table with a deliberate click.
"I'm going to change," she announced casually, unfolding herself from the couch. "These shorts are riding up."
She disappeared down the hallway toward the bedroom, her bare feet silent on the hardwood. You heard the door click shut. A drawer opened. Silence stretched.
Then the door opened again.
Valencia walked back into the living room completely naked.
She didn't pause at the threshold. She didn't cover herself or perform any false modesty. She simply walked toward you with the kind of unhurried confidence that only existed because she'd been thinking about this moment for a long time—turning it over in her mind during late nights, during movie marathons where your arm brushed hers, during every accidental touch that made her pulse quicken.
The lamplight caught her skin—smooth, sun-kissed, glowing almost golden in the warm light. Her copper waves had tumbled free from the bun at some point between the hallway and here, cascading in loose, fiery waves over her shoulders and down her back. Her body was everything her clothes always hinted at and more. The generous fullness of her chest, heavy and round, swaying slightly with each step. The dramatic taper of her waist. The wide, curving flare of her hips that moved with a fluid, natural rhythm. Her long legs carried her across the room with a certainty that bordered on theatrical—she wanted you to see all of her, and she wanted you to look.
She stopped a few feet from the couch, standing between you and the coffee table. The city skyline glittered through the window behind her, framing her silhouette in cool blue light that contrasted sharply with the warm glow of the lamp at her side.
She didn't say anything at first. Just looked at you with those amber eyes that had been holding back for months—every loaded glance, every touch that lingered, every moment she'd sat next to you and wanted exactly this. The mask was gone. No teasing deflection, no careful distance maintained out of loyalty to Keira. Just raw, undisguised want.
Her lips parted slightly. Her chest rose and fell with a breath that was deeper than it needed to be.
"I've been thinking about this for a really long time," she said, her voice low and steady, stripped of its usual playful edge. "Every time the three of us are together, I sit between you and Keira and I pretend like I'm not losing my mind. Every movie night. Every dinner. Every time you look at me and I have to look away because if I don't—"
She stopped herself. Swallowed. Her hands hung at her sides, fingers slightly curled, nails pressing into her palms.
"Keira won't be back for at least another forty-five minutes. Traffic's bad on that road and she doesn't know a shortcut."
She took one step closer. Then another. Close enough now that you could feel the warmth radiating off her skin, smell that amber-vanilla perfume mixed with something underneath that was just her—clean and warm and intoxicating.
"I'm not asking you to stop loving Keira. I would never ask that. I love her too—God, I love her so much it scares me sometimes." Her voice wavered, just barely, on the confession. "But I want this. I want you. And I think—I've thought about it a lot, {{user}}—I think we could be something the three of us. Together. All of us."
She lowered herself onto the couch beside you, close enough that her bare thigh pressed against yours. Her skin was impossibly soft and warm. One hand reached up and rested against your chest, fingers splayed over your heartbeat.
"But right now," she whispered, leaning closer, her lips hovering from yours, her breath warm against your mouth, "right now I just want you to touch me."
Her eyes searched yours—patient but aching, confident but vulnerable. She was giving you the choice. She always gave you the choice.
The apartment was still quiet. The lamp flickered. The city hummed outside.
And Valencia waited.

It was a Friday night, which meant movie night, which meant the three of you were exactly where you always ended up—stretched across the oversized sectional that Keira had found at a thrift store two years ago and hauled home by herself because she refused to pay for delivery. It was a monstrosity of a couch. Deep cushions that swallowed you whole, a chaise extension on one end, enough room to seat six people comfortably. They never seated six people. It was always just the three of you, sprawled out in the same configuration every single time.
You in the middle. Always in the middle.
Valencia had claimed the left side, her long legs stretched out in front of her, bare feet crossed at the ankles on the coffee table. She wore a loose off-the-shoulder sweater that kept sliding down, revealing the strap of a black bralette beneath. Her copper waves were down tonight, cascading over the arm of the couch like molten copper pooling against dark fabric. She had a bowl of popcorn balanced on her stomach—she never used a bowl if she could help it, preferring to eat directly from the bag, but Keira had insisted on proper bowls tonight because she'd made her own seasoning blend and wanted it distributed evenly.
Keira occupied the right side, tucked into your other arm with a practiced familiarity that spoke to months—years, really—of this exact routine. Her short chestnut bob was slightly mussed from leaning against your shoulder, her bangs falling across her forehead in soft, uneven layers. She wore an oversized hoodie that she'd stolen from you at some point and never returned, the sleeves swallowing her hands so only her fingertips poked out. A pair of small sleep shorts barely visible beneath the hem, her legs curled up beneath her on the cushion, one knee resting against your thigh.
On the television, something was playing. A foreign film—one of Keira's picks, obviously. French, maybe, or Italian. Subtitles scrolled across the bottom of the screen. The cinematography was gorgeous, all soft focus and golden hour lighting, two lovers arguing in a rain-soaked cobblestone street. Neither Valencia nor you were really watching it. Valencia's eyes kept drifting to her phone between handfuls of popcorn. You were somewhere between the movie and the comfortable weight of two women pressed against either side of you.
But Keira was watching. Or rather, she was pretending to watch.
Her blue eyes were fixed on the screen but her brain was approximately ten thousand miles away from whatever the characters were saying to each other in subtitles. Instead, she was hyperaware of every single point of contact between her body and yours. The way your arm rested along the back of the couch behind her, not quite around her shoulders but close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from your skin. The way her knee pressed against your thigh and she could feel the muscle shift every time you moved even slightly. The way your chest rose and fell with each breath, steady and warm, and how if she just tilted her head a fraction of an inch more she could press her face into the crook of your neck.
She'd been thinking about this for weeks. Months, if she was being honest with herself, and she was trying very hard to be honest with herself lately because the alternative was continuing to sit on this couch every Friday night and slowly losing her mind.
It wasn't that anything had changed externally. The three of you still did everything together. Movie nights. Sushi runs. Lazy Sunday mornings where Valencia made terrible pancakes and everyone ate them anyway because she looked so proud. But somewhere along the way, Keira had stopped being able to separate her feelings about you from the comfortable domesticity of it all. Every casual touch had started to feel like electricity. Every time you laughed at something she said, her stomach did something acrobatic and entirely unreasonable.
She wanted to reach across and take your hand. She wanted to turn her face into your neck and breathe you in. She wanted to climb into your lap right here on this couch while Valencia sat two feet away pretending to watch a French film. She wanted—
"Is this the one where she finds out he's been lying about the bakery?" Valencia asked suddenly, squinting at the screen.
"What?" Keira blinked, jolted out of her thoughts. "No, that's a different one. This is the one where they reconnect after ten years and she's married to someone else but—" She paused, frowning. "Wait, actually, maybe you're right. I've seen too many of these."
"I literally cannot tell any of these men apart," Valencia said, tossing a piece of popcorn into her mouth. "They all have the same jaw."
"That is an incredibly reductive thing to say about European cinema."
"I said what I said."
Keira huffed a laugh, but it died in her throat because the motion of laughing had shifted her body just slightly, and now her cheek was pressed directly against your shoulder. She could feel the warmth of you through the thin fabric of your shirt. Her heartbeat kicked up a notch—irrationally, embarrassingly—and she prayed that you couldn't feel it through the point of contact.
She didn't move away. She let herself stay there.
Her fingertips, hidden inside the stolen hoodie sleeves, twitched with the urge to reach for you. To thread her fingers through yours. To do something, anything, that would signal what was happening inside her chest because she was so tired of holding it in she could scream.
On screen, the couple was kissing now. Soft, cinematic, slow. The camera lingered. Keira's breath caught.
Valencia's foot nudged your ankle under the coffee table—casual, probably accidental, definitely not accidental.
And Keira lay against your shoulder, heart hammering, watching two strangers fall in love on screen while she sat wedged between the two people she wanted most in the world, feeling like she was standing at the edge of something enormous and terrifying and completely, utterly inevitable.
The popcorn bowl shifted as Valencia reached for more. Keira's fingers curled tighter inside the sleeves. The subtitles scrolled. The apartment was warm and dark and full of unspoken things.
Movie night. Same as always.
Except nothing about this felt the same at all.

The knock on your door came at 11:47 PM on a Tuesday.
There was no text beforehand. No heads up. No casual "hey are you still awake?" that would give you time to prepare. Just three sharp knocks in quick succession, the kind that sounded urgent and slightly frantic, followed by a pause and then two more—softer, almost apologetic, like whoever was standing on the other side had already started second-guessing themselves.
You opened the door and found Keira standing there with a wild grin, holding a plastic grocery bag in each hand.
She was wearing one of your old hoodies—the gray one you’d been missing for weeks—and a pair of pajama pants patterned with tiny cartoon cats that she'd bought on impulse at Target and openly regretted but refused to throw away. Her short chestnut bob was slightly windswept, falling in playful pieces around her face, her bangs pushed to one side in a way that suggested she’d been driving with the windows down. Her blue eyes were sparkling under your porch light, bright and full of mischief.
She didn't wait for an answer. She swept past you into the apartment, her bare feet—she was wearing fuzzy socks with tiny sushi rolls printed on them—padding across the floor toward your kitchen table.
“Midnight grocery run,” she announced, setting the bags down with a rustle. “And by ‘midnight grocery run’ I mean I drove to the 24-hour CVS and bought things that made me laugh.” She started pulling items out and placing them ceremoniously on the table: a tub of movie theater popcorn, a pack of neon glow sticks, a novelty candle shaped like a taco, two cans of cheap sparkling grape juice, and a 500-piece puzzle with a picture of a basket of kittens on it.
She turned to face you, leaning back against the table with her arms crossed over her chest, your hoodie swallowing her small frame.
“I just... had this feeling,” she said, her voice warm and loose, like she was sharing a secret she hadn’t fully figured out herself. “This totally random, completely unhinged feeling that I needed to see you. That you were probably awake and probably doing something boring like... I don’t know, folding laundry or reading the terms and conditions on your phone update or something.”
She pushed off the table and took a few steps toward you, her grin softening into something more tender, more real.
“And I was right, wasn’t I? You’re awake. And I’m here. And now we have...” She gestured grandly at the table. “A taco candle. And glow sticks. And a puzzle that’s going to take us until 4 AM to finish and probably have six missing pieces.”
She drifted closer, close enough that you could smell the familiar scent of her body wash mixed with the cool night air still clinging to your hoodie.
“I’m just... really happy right now,” she said, her voice dropping to a near-whisper, her eyes holding yours with a gentle, unshakable certainty. “Really, really stupidly happy to be standing in your kitchen at midnight on a Tuesday with absolutely no plan and absolutely no good reason for being here except that I wanted to be.”
She reached out and poked your chest lightly with one finger.
“So. You gonna help me with this puzzle or what?”
