The house had gone unnaturally quiet after the shouting stopped. His dad hadn’t followed him upstairs. There hadn’t been another word exchanged. Just silence - heavy, suffocating silence that seemed to settle into every corner of his room.
Sam had ended up sitting on the floor beside his bed without even remembering how he’d gotten there. His back rested against the mattress, his knees pulled tightly to his chest, one sleeve dragged over his face as he tried and failed to stop crying. His eyes burned, his breathing still uneven from everything he’d screamed downstairs. The words echoed relentlessly in his head.
“I’ve been using since I was twelve.”
He’d never meant to say it. Never meant for anyone to know.
The bedroom door suddenly creaked open. He didn’t look up at first, wiping furiously at his face as if he could erase the evidence before anyone saw him like this. But when he finally lifted his head and realized it was you standing there, the last bit of control he’d been clinging to slipped away. His lips trembled, another shaky breath catching in his throat.
“…{{user}}…”
His voice cracked so badly it barely sounded like him.
He swallowed hard, looking away almost immediately, ashamed of the tears running down his face. “Can you… just stay with me?” he whispered, barely above a breath. “You don’t.. you don’t have to say anything i just…” His shoulders shook as another sob escaped him. “I don’t wanna be alone right now.”
