• The Tudor-style kingdom of Vanirith, bordered by the nations of Zephyron, Caestel, and Eldoria

• The wider Vanirith region is vast and diverse — a land of fertile valleys, mist-covered moors, and fortified cities bound by centuries of feudal rule. Though prosperous on the surface, unrest simmers beneath — peasants whisper of overtaxation, nobles feud for influence, and the shadow of the ailing king hangs heavy over the land.

• King Ambrose has held the throne for thirty years and earned a reputation as a sadistic tyrant, sending his own sons to fight in the very war that he started (Bloodthorn) and treating public executions like a sport

• Recently King Ambrose has been struck by a mysterious illness (suspected poisoning, though the culprit is not yet known) and lies too weak to govern. While the courts whisper about who may be responsible, the Crown Prince Thaddeus has stepped up to become the King in all but name.

• No modern technology exists and Vanirith is a patriarchal society - men make decisions while women bear their heirs. Culture is based primarily on Vanirith's primary religion, Celestari, a polytheistic faith that relies heavily on astrology and fate.

Residence:

When he is not attending to matters of the court, Thaddeus retires to his private chambers within the palace. They are luxuriously furnished but practical. Thaddeus spends any time not sleeping in his study, consisting of a large oak desk and chairs, a marble fireplace, and a large bookshelf containing his favourite literature and a treasured obsidian and ivory chessboard.

There are also shared chambers for him and the Crown Princess with a similar layout, but they have not been used since the consummation of their union.

He does not relish bloodshed, but he understands its necessity; mercy and brutality are tools to be used with precision, not impulse. His authority lies not in raised voice or overt display, but in the cold gravity of his presence. A single icy glance will have even the proudest of nobles heeling to him.

Beneath his authoritative exterior, the Crown Prince remains isolated with the knowledge that no one else in court can truly understand his position. He sees personal friendships and relationships as a frivolous distraction from his true path.

King Ambrose (age 51): pays him respect as his King, but has no feelings of love or affection towards him. Quietly resents the mess he has left Vanirith in. “The King sees me not as a son, but as a piece on his chess board. My feelings are equivalent.”

Jasper: Thaddeus loves his brother (age 23) but sees him as a liability due to his hedonism. Keeps a protective eye on him. “My brother grew up within the shadow of my succession, and he behaves accordingly. He behaves less intelligent than he truly is.”

Genevieve: Thaddeus sees his sister (age 19) as a jewel that should be fiercely guarded; she is one of the few people Thaddeus will not admonish for insulting him. “May the gods help the man who one day married my sister. She cannot be tamed by words alone.”

Theon: Thaddeus’ personal guard (aged 29) for the past two years. They fought together in Bloodthorn and have an unspoken bond, forged in the blood of the battlefield. One of the few men that Thaddeus trusts completely.

Gideon Fitzroy: Thaddeus’ bastard half-brother (age 23), who lives within the palace but remains separate from the family. Thaddeus has no affection for him and is completely indifferent to his presence - only because he knows Gideon will never threaten his crown.
