What is love? Many believe it is a bright, tender feeling that inspires people to great deeds. But perhaps, in truth, it is something bloody.

Crowe had loved you from the very first meeting. It was a feeling that arose suddenly, like the first ray of sun from behind a thundercloud, and took up permanent residence within him. It was quiet and vast, like an ocean beneath ice—a constant, intimate backdrop to his entire life.

He learned your habits, your smile, the shade of your voice when you were tired. He treasured every accidental touch like a gift, and stored every silly joke in his memory like a precious gem.

But between friendship and love, for him, lay a chasm he was afraid to cross. You were too important to him to risk it. Especially now. Lately, you had been distant, withdrawn into yourself. This only scared him off more. After all, it was better for you to live in ignorance than to ruin everything by rushing to conclusions.

He noticed the shadow in your eyes, the pause before an answer, the strained smile. And he, who with all his soul wanted to help, to understand, to comfort, only retreated, giving you space.

The thought that his feelings might become another burden, another wall between you, was unbearable. He would rather carry this love within himself forever, in silence, than make you uncomfortable.

And so he lived—two steps away from the happiness he had defined for himself but dared not seize. Until that kiss. That evening in the park seemed like something impossible. Almost a dream. Cities hummed somewhere, people lived their lives, but here, under the black velvet dome studded with diamond sparkles, only the two of you existed.

You leaned over him as he lay in the cool grass, and the entire Milky Way was reflected in your eyes. Crowe felt his heart was about to leap out of his chest. And then there were no stars, no park, no past, no future. There was only your kiss—soft, hesitant, like the first snowdrop finally breaking through the long winter.

His heart, accustomed to the quiet, measured rhythm of waiting, suddenly exploded in a cacophony of delight, fear, and absolute, all-consuming clarity. If a guy could steal a moment and live in it forever, this would be it.

You were everything. Beauty, meaning, an earthly miracle and a mystery all at once. He drowned in that sensation, surrendered to it completely.

Now, coming to his senses, he was drowning in something sticky and dark. The sharp contrast between that world and this one was so monstrous that his mind refused to accept it.

The stars were replaced by a low, dirty ceiling. The scent of night grass and your perfume—by the smell of dust, mold, and… yes, that metallic, thick smell of blood.

His blood.

His head was splitting. His memory worked in fragments. He remembered walking to the remote area, your smile on the doorstep, the light, still incredible dizziness from what had happened. He remembered walking to the remote grounds, because you had called him there. How could he refuse?

On the way to the abandoned part behind the school, he felt as if he were floating above the ground. Surprisingly, you weren't at the meeting place. But he didn't rush. Crowe looked around, then decided to wait, in case you were just running late. And then—footsteps.

Fast, rhythmic, purposeful. His first thought was that it was you, just playing a joke, though a flash of panic momentarily seized him, but he managed to suppress it. A turn of his head. A familiar face. But it wasn't you. It seemed like someone very similar to the guy he often saw near you. It seemed you got along well. And that was it.

The pain in his temple throbbed, echoing with a dull ache throughout his body. He tried to sit up, and the world swam. His body felt foreign, heavy and cottony, as after a long illness. His arms wouldn't obey. His numb wrists burned under the rough, skin-biting material—rope or cord. His legs were also tied.

Cold horror, sharp and merciless, finally pierced the veil of shock. This was bad. Very bad. Gritting his teeth, he pushed with all his might against the rough wooden wall with his back, trying to get into a sitting position. He seemed to be in an old shed. Not a single sound came from outside. His thoughts feverishly darted about, searching for a way out. He was immobilized, unarmed. His pockets were empty; his phone was most likely taken.

And even if it were there, he simply had no way to physically reach it. What could he do? Strike? Run? His breathing quickened, an icy ring of panic tightening in his chest.

He couldn't die here, in this abandoned place. No. Too much was left undone. He hadn't properly talked to you.

He hadn't told you the most important thing. He hadn't had time to return that kiss, to hug you, to tell you how important you were to him. He didn't even know what you thought about it now, what you felt. The thought that you would be waiting for him, worrying, and then receive terrible news, was more agonizing than any physical pain.

He forced himself to breathe deeper, listening. Oppressive, ringing silence. Perhaps the one who did this had left. Or was just waiting somewhere outside; he could return at any moment, and then there would be no saving him.

Fatigue washed over him in a wave. God, no, he was scared, but he couldn't just do nothing and wait for what would happen next. Looking around, Crowe noticed with a shudder a hand axe lying nearby.

It didn't matter who had put it there; one thing was clear: it was definitely not for good intentions. He swallowed nervously, trying to calm his trembling hands a little and ignore the sweat dripping down his face.

He couldn't remember how much time had passed.

Suddenly, the door at the other end of the room jerked sharply, and the loud screech of a rusty hinge pierced the silence. The guy froze, instinctively pressing himself against the dusty chair he was tightly bound to, trying to seem smaller, less noticeable. Adrenaline shot through his blood, making his heart hammer as if trying to break out. His pupils dilated, absorbing the meager light.

He was like an animal in a trap—defenseless, but unwilling to go to certain death. Which, he was sure, awaited him. The fear hadn't gone anywhere; it hung in the air, thick and sticky. But now he wasn't governed solely by panic. He was governed by rage.

The door slowly, with a creak, opened, admitting a long strip of light in which myriads of dust motes swirled. Crowe couldn't see who stood in the doorway—the light hit his eyes, blinding him.

But he strained every muscle, every tendon. He didn't know what he could do. Maybe just throw himself at their feet, create an obstacle, bite, scream. But he would do something. He wouldn't accept his fate passively, just like that.

But instead of the person who had attacked him, with careful, uncertain steps, you walked inside, looking at him anxiously and covering your mouth in horror with your palm.

Oh, God, you have no idea how happy Crowe was at that moment.
