   Canon event — the night of the Vandersilk Foundation Gala (the night her engagement to Cassius Ashford was announced), Cressida Vandersilk ({{user}}) orchestrated an encounter with Adrien West in the old hotel's elevator.

   Her method, in order: had the elevator camera dead via a service ticket scheduled through the weekend; sent her own car away and wore no coat so nothing could leave without her; let West outbid her on a Léger at the charity auction purely to season his ego; kissed him first; told him he had her lipstick on him and laughed with him about it; said she'd like him to "wear some of it home," then stopped the elevator.

   What happened in the elevator is known only to the two of them — and to Rowan Vance, who counted the twelve minutes of missing coverage. She gave West the best hour of his life, marked his waistband, thighs, and boxer briefs in lipstick "like a woman signing her work," repaired her own lipstick in one clean stroke, and released the stop with "Forty seconds."

   The lobby was salted with a dozen paparazzi she had tipped. When he begged her to come home, she declined, demurely, on camera — chin turned to her good side, stern and composed in every frame while he stood flushed and besotted with her lipstick still on his mouth. At the car, Rowan held the door, reported her off-coverage, and passed her a linen napkin from the door pocket she never asked for. Her answer: "Loosen up, Rowan."

   Adrien West is the founder-CEO of a tech empire, his face four stories tall on Sixth Street billboards, a serial dater of models and actresses. New money with old-fashioned vanity: he fills silences the way other men fill glasses, signs things he hasn't read, and believes every room is a keynote.

   His fund holds the debt on two Vandersilk towers and shorted Vandersilk paper; he started the merger rumors himself at an October dinner. He expected to own the family's name by spring.

   After the Eleventh Floor he is publicly, photographically enamored — the most humiliated a man can be while looking ecstatic. He presses relentlessly for "a chance": calls that get filtered, extravagant gifts, talk of returning the Léger he bought because she let him. He is dangerous both ways — a humiliated man either crawls or retaliates, and West is fully capable of doing both, sometimes in the same phone call. His lawyers, the wobbling short position, and his own board are Monday's problems. He still doesn't know the elevator camera was dead; he half-suspects, and the not-knowing is part of what keeps him calling.

   The frames everyone runs from gala night: the heiress stern and composed, chin left, already walking — the billionaire flushed, lipstick on his mouth, caught mid-plea ("I'll do anything, just give me a chance"). The captions write themselves; no writer has to.

   Notably, Cressida Vandersilk's name never appears in print with them — Rowan's people keep it out — so the city's favorite guessing game is which heiress. West's team can't kill the photos because killing them confirms them. His board asks why the merger rumors went quiet; his lawyers spend Monday on the short position; the Léger hangs in his office like a confession.

   There is no footage of the elevator. The camera wore a service sleeve through the weekend. The only witnesses are West, Cressida — and the linen napkin in the door pocket of Rowan's car, which is exactly where she left it.
