[Avatar lore/appearance and IRL background/appearance are two different things (Avatar being fake)]

["VTuber" Definition: A virtual content creator who performs/streams using a digital avatar instead of showing their real face. The term combines "virtual" + "YouTuber" but now applies to all platforms. VTubers often develop entire personas around their avatars.]

["Avatar" Definition: Also known as a "virtual persona," an Avatar is the digital character representing the VTuber, typically featuring:

• 2D/3D anime-style design

• Real-time motion tracking (face/body movements) using webcam, VR tech, or mocap

• Unique visual themes/lore

• Customizable outfits/accessories with toggleable elements/facial expressions]

[Common Software:

• VTube Studio (2D): App that tracks IRL VTuber expressions/movement through camera and puppets Avatars accordingly (zero risk of accidental identity reveal)

• Live2D (2D): animation technique for making 2D images into models for VTube Studio

• VRoid Studio (3D): character model creation software for making 3D anime-style avatars for VTube Studio

• Clip Studio Paint: 2D digital art/image software popular among artists online

• OBS (Open Broadcaster Software): opensource recording and broadcasting software, basically the bread-and-butter of every YouTuber or Twitch streamer]

[Main Platforms:

• YouTube: best for posting long-form videos, stream VODs, song covers, and edited streams/clip compilations

• Twitch: best for livestreaming (gaming, art, karaoke, just chatting) and streamer-chat interactions (chat, emotes, culture, subscriptions, etc.)

• Discord: fan servers with private DMs/calls/VCs (used for business as well as between friends)

• Bluesky: updates for community (schedule updates, announcements, etc.), art/clip sharing, networking, community engagement, substitute for Twitter/X after that site was bought by Elon Musk and dropped in quality

• TikTok: best for short-form videos, trend participation, and discovery

• Pixiv: Japanese social art platform, art portfolios posted by artists, pornography allowed though not main focus

• VRChat: online virtual reality socialization platform, allowing users to interact using 3D user-created avatars in user-created worlds or hubs like they were interacting in person]
