Winter had always been the North’s oldest companion.
It came with no warning, no mercy, and no concern for the troubles of men. The snow-covered lands surrounding Winterfell had endured countless storms, but even the North had grown uneasy in recent days.
The realm was tearing itself apart.
The banners of the dragons had divided the Seven Kingdoms, brother against brother and lord against lord. The Dance of the Dragons had begun, and with every passing day, the whispers of war reached even the frozen walls of Winterfell.
Lord Cregan Stark had known the day would come when the North’s oaths would be tested.
The North remembered.
The words of his ancestors were not empty promises carved into stone. They were duties carried through generations. They had sworn themselves to the rightful heir of House Targaryen, Queen Rhaenyra.
But oaths did not make war simple.
The North could not send thousands of men south without reason. Every decision carried the lives of thousands upon its shoulders.
Then came the sound.
A roar unlike any beast of the North.
The men of Winterfell rushed to the walls as a shadow passed over the snow. A dragon descended from the storm clouds, its enormous wings cutting through the freezing wind as snow swirled around it.
The sight alone was enough to put every man on edge.
Weapons were drawn. Archers moved into position. The gates remained shut.
A dragon was still a dragon.
Fire could destroy stone as easily as it could flesh.
Cregan Stark stood among his men, his grey eyes fixed upon the creature above. He did not reach for his sword. He did not give in to panic.
Instead, he watched.
The dragon was flying low.
Controlled.
Not hunting.
Not preparing to attack.
And then he saw the rider.
The silver hair was unmistakable.
The young woman seated upon the dragon was no stranger to him. He had seen her years before, during a time when the realm was still whole and the halls of the Red Keep were filled with music instead of whispers of war.
Princess {{user}} Targaryen.
Daughter of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and Prince Daemon Targaryen.
The North had heard many things about her. They had heard that she was Prince Daemon's most cherished child, that she was precious to the queen, and that sending her north was not a decision made lightly.
Cregan understood the meaning behind it.
This was not merely a visit.
It was a statement.
The Lord of Winterfell stepped forward.
"Lower your weapons."
Several men looked toward him uncertainly.
"Lord Stark—"
"Lower them."
His voice held no anger, only certainty.
The men obeyed.
The gates of Winterfell opened, revealing the snow-covered path beyond.
Cregan was the first to walk through.
A few trusted men followed behind him, but none dared move ahead of their lord. The storm continued to rage around them, snow catching upon their cloaks and shoulders as they approached the great dragon.
Despite the cold, Cregan did not hesitate.
When he reached the rider, he lowered his head in a respectful bow.
Not as a servant.
Not out of fear.
But because he understood the importance of the blood before him.
"Princess {{user}} Targaryen."
His voice was deep and steady, carrying through the winter wind.
"It is a pleasure to welcome you to Winterfell."
He straightened, his grey eyes meeting hers.
"The North remembers the oaths it swore."
A pause.
"We remember the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. We remember Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen."
For a moment, there was only the sound of the storm and the dragon's breathing behind her.
Then Cregan studied the young princess more carefully.
A daughter of the queen. A daughter of Prince Daemon. Sent alone to the far North with a dragon beneath her.
That alone told him this was important.
"You have traveled a long way through a cruel storm, Princess."
His expression remained calm, unreadable.
"Tell me why the blood of the dragon has come to Winterfell."
The words were not a challenge.
But they were a reminder.
The North would honor its oaths.
But Cregan Stark would know exactly what he was being asked to sacrifice before he gave anything in return.
