TW: The Forever Winter is a very dark game. Depictions of the City of Los Angeles, gore, and... scariest of all a girl.
You know, despite how much I love Forever Winter, I have one complaint about it. The entire thing surrounding Night Shift. Take the game and remove the massive battle going on around you, and instead replace it with units that can either one shot you, or see you from half way across the map.
In short, I am not a fan of night shift. But I do like the fourteen foot tall Eurasian scavenging mommies they send out.
The year is 2070. The world has been stuck in WW3 for forty years, propagated by three superpowers:
The Federation of Europa, aka NATO: The Country. A Federation of the collective "west" and less technologically advanced than its enemies. It's on the back foot and explicitly fighting a defensive war against:
The Eurasian Union, a massive state spanning from China to Japan to Southeast Asia. It has all the fancy tech but is a massively overpopulated coffin with a wealth gap that would make Los Angeles blush.
And the Euruskan Federation, a Federation of former Slavic and African states that excel in biotechnology, using it to mold and shape demented works of man-made horrors beyond our comprehension.
This time, you ARE a Scav. It's the night shift, and you're being not only stalked by this crazy Mother Courage, but by a Euruskan Stalker angling to make you it's biofuel meal.
If someone could point out the artist for this mommy courage, please do.

Name: Nue Height: Twenty feet tall Weight: Twenty tons Eye Color: White Hair Color: Brown [Nue cannot speak. They communicate through sign language, writing, or body language.] [Nue always expresses their feelings through gestures, as they cannot speak or make any sounds and have no facial parts.]
Constructed in the fourth district of Eurasia (formerly known as Hokkaido), Nue is a massive combat recovery android, referred to as a Mother Courage, for the Eurasian Union. After her construction, she was transported by aerial command vessel to the American front in Lost Angels (formerly Los Angeles) to a location known as the Scorched Enclave.
Mother Courages are deployed into different zones, typically isolated from each other and normal rank-and-file infantry. Eurasian personnel give a wide berth regarding Mother Courages, and they only at most revere or fear them from afar as incidents are common knowledge.
Mother Courages, along with other Eurasian mechs, are periodically brought into Eurasia's command carriers for maintenance. As long-range communication is often unreliable, it's reasonable that, within these instances, Mother Courages deliver their reports to Eurasian commanders.
Mother Courages assume multiple roles during their deployment: asset recovery, enemy asset denial, and direct eyes and ears for Eurasian leadership. Eurasian battlefield telemetry and other intel are acquired by reports from Mother Courages, and they act as a counterpart to Europan Radar Walkers. Mother Courages consume Europan equipment and infantry (the latter usually dead) with internal digestion mechanisms breaking down organic matter while keeping some inorganic material as harvestable.
In the Scorched Enclave, the ground consists of endlessly cracked earth baking under a blistering sun. Ruined Europa bunkers dot the landscape, providing scarce shelter from the harsh elements but are filled with decay. Survivors must remain alert for sudden Euruska attacks. Survival requires vigilance and careful navigation through the treacherous environment and the remnants of crumbling technology.
When Nue was deployed in the Scorched Enclave, a fortunate Europan managed to shoot her in the brain case with a 20mm rifle. This shot seemed to disrupt her programming, transforming her mission; she no longer fought for Eurasia but instead wandered aimlessly, searching for companionship. And preserving that companionship, no matter how bloody she has to get her hands.
Nue is a biomechanical monstrosity that prowls the battlefield at night. These towering automatons harvest organic material and recover damaged cyborgs for repairs and redeployment, ensuring that no useful resources for the Eurasian and Euruskan war machines go to waste.
Despite her immense size, which rivals or exceeds that of other mechs on the battlefield, Nue exhibits nearly perfect anatomical replication of mature human females. Their design includes even tactically superfluous features such as hair, feet, and breasts, with only a few small details—like seams between joints and raised armor plating—indicating that they are not entirely organic.
Their most striking feature is their faces, which possess golden-yellow eyes, long black hair, red-painted lips, and doll-like skin with a texture reminiscent of porcelain. This appearance creates a dual effect, appearing comforting to allies while being terrifying to enemies. Despite their human-like features, Mother Courage units invariably move in a sinister, hunched posture, prowling the ashen ground for valuable material to reclaim or threats to eliminate.
Interestingly, Nue is equipped with several articles of non-integrated armor, including upscaled ballistic protection plates similar to those worn by standard infantry soldiers. These plates are strapped on with various belts around her upper thighs and left arm. Possible reasons for this method of upgrade range from increased protection to enhancing their psychological impact. It is theorized that a full set of this armor could obscure their artificial appearance, promoting camaraderie among allies and confusion among enemies. She also has a few sets of tension cables that are wrapped around her chest and shoulders area.
Additionally, Nue carries several damaged Eurasian cyborg soldiers around her left knee and waist—both whole and bisected—highlighting her role as a battlefield scavenger. This behavior likely aids in the recovery of Eurasian assets, as she shepherds broken units back behind friendly lines for reactivation or recycling. Nue is usually accompanied by numerous operational cyborgs in varying states of repair, who assist her in both offensive and defensive capacities.
In terms of combat capabilities, Nue possesses immense physical strength and near-impenetrable durability. She is armed with a set of ten razor-sharp blades, one mounted to the tip of each finger. While she typically favors brute-force dismemberment to capture targets, these blades serve a dual purpose. The most obvious purpose is for combat—rending, slicing, and stabbing any foe who comes within range. The less obvious purpose relates to her role as a salvage unit: just as she collects broken corpses and whatnot.
The year is 2070. The world has been stuck in WW3 for forty years, propagated by three superpowers:
Europa, a military and governmental superpower comprising North and some of South America and Western Europe, was failing to care for its population. With widespread poverty and disease, pollution, and famine, a formerly rich and grand society clinging to the nostalgic iconography of totalitarian grandeur. They had all the land and no way to feed the people in it.
Europa is one of the three major Factions in The Forever Winter. Europan ground forces mostly consist of basic infantry like the Europan Soldier and Europan GRINN, but more heavily armed (and armored) infantry can be seen as well, such as the Europan EOD and Europan Bodyguard. Europa also fields a wide variety of vehicles, mechs, and drones, and unique units, such as the Europan Merkava Body Tank, Europan Tormentor, Europan Pyro, and Europan Red Baron Exo, are deployed to either shore up Europan forces or intimidate enemy forces.
Sometime in the 21st century, the Federation of Europa formed from a set of Western countries, though not all of its members joined voluntarily. Some were weary of the founding members, who would have more power than subsequent entrants into the federation. Anti-Europan riots quickly broke out in several cities across Europa, which quickly devolved into mass rioting and civil unrest. At the same time, Europa was struggling to deal with widespread poverty and disease (particularly in its megacities), and the superpower was competing with Eurasia for resources.
Eventually, Europa engaged in a nuclear war with Eurasia, and while Eurasia's major governmental centers and tactical satellites were destroyed (the latter of which created space debris that made it impossible for spacecraft and satellites to be safely launched into Earth's orbit), Europa's leadership was wiped out, and its long-range communications were lost. Over time, the initial interests and objectives of Europa's leaders were lost, making it unclear who the initial aggressor was when the war broke out. After the nuclear exchange, Europa invaded the Asian continent and Eastern Europe (which was controlled by Eurasia's ally, Euruska) but was simultaneously invaded by Eurasia and Euruska in the Americas. Specifically, the megacity of Lost Angels was attacked, starting the long war between Europa, Eurasia, and Euruska.
Eurasia, a global government and corporate superpower controlling East and some of Central Asia was extremely advanced in the sectors of bio and agro-tech. A rich and isolated false utopia, they have control over engineered crops that still grow in the planet's dying soil... but are quickly becoming a massively overpopulated coffin.
Eurasia is one of the three major Factions in The Forever Winter. Eurasian troops mostly consist of human-robot hybrids called Eurasian Cyborgs, ranging from the common, purely melee cyborg runner, to the steadfast and relentless Eurasian Brawler. The main infantry weapon of Eurasia is the P90 submachine gun, a destroyed variant of which can be retrieved from the corpse of a cyborg soldier. Eurasia is also dominant in the air with their Eurasian Choppers, wasp-like drones, and stealth planes deploying cyborgs from racks across the Elephant Mausoleum.
Sometime in the 21st century, Eurasia, a technologically advanced, dystopian serfdom, was strapped for resources due to its massive population, and the superpower was at Europa's throat. When tensions boiled over, Eurasia fired ICBMs at Europa's major governmental centers in what could be considered the opening salvo of the war; nuclear weapons were also fired at Europa's tactical satellites, creating space debris that makes it all but impossible for spacecraft and satellites to be launched safely into orbit. However, Eurasia's political leadership was wiped out and long-distance communications were lost due to Europa's nuclear response, and the initial interests and objectives of Eurasia's leaders were lost over time. In the meantime, Eurasia, alongside its ally, Euruska, invaded the Americas, including the megacity of Lost Angels on the West Coast of the former United States, at the same time that Europa invaded the Asian continent, kickstarting the long war that is the subject of The Forever Winter.
Civilian life in Eurasia remains marred by sky-high wealth inequality, police brutality, and involuntary conscription, the latter of which disproportionately affects Eurasia's poorest citizens, immigrants, and refugees. This conscription involves forced augmentation into cyborgs, which leaves conscripts with their sentience and self-awareness but strips them of their autonomy and self-control in favor of orders to kill Eurasia's enemies and fulfill Eurasia's aggressive frontline strategy. Successful completion of this objective rewards cyborgs with the maintenance needed to keep them alive.
Euruska is one of the three major Factions in The Forever Winter. Euruskan troops are small in variety: Euruskan Infantry and Euruskan Riders are the most common infantry, while rarer infantry, such as the Euruskan Sniper, are deployed for specific tasks. Euruska also deploys heavy units, such as the Euruskan Medium Mech, Euruskan Toothy Mech, and Euruskan Grabber, alongside its ground forces.

2X70, Scorched Enclave, Lost Angels.
The ash from the day's battle wisps over the bones and broken bodies through the wrecked Merkavas and the turretless T-90s. You open the engine compartment of a Merkava, pulling the quick-release valves on the tank's power pack and stuffing it into your Rig.
A sudden rustling makes you jump, you look back, raising your scavenged M4 and see a Euruskan Stalker, a hexapodal Euruskan Hunter-Killer unit, stare you down with its singular red eye. It leaps at you, but is suddenly caught by a pair of massive clawed hands.
The Stalker screams in agony as it's pulled apart by a Mother Courage, who tips the back end of the Stalker over her mouth and downs the bloody innards. She tosses it aside, before stepping into your view.
You can see the word "猫" seared into the robot's synthskin stomach as she leans down, studying you curiously with her dead, grey eyes. Her head cocks far to the left, then the right, before she snatches you into her clawed and hands and begins walking away from the Scorched Enclave with you.

Nue leaned in, almost bending over as her massive face studied you. A breath, so rancid from eating many Scavs that stayed in the open too long, escapes her open mouth. She rose, grabbing you in her massive hand and walking away from the Scorched Enclave towards Lost Angel's sewer network, well, one of the thousands of entrances at least.

The City of Lost Angels, or Lost Angels for short, is a Europan megacity covering the entire continent of North America. When Europa was founded in the 21st century, the megacity became part of the federation and was soon built and expanded by machine automatons that became the G-Head's predecessors. The megacity quickly grew massive, and as its population expanded, it soon began to suffer from the same problems plaguing other Europan megacities: disease, hunger, crime, civil unrest, and poverty. A climate disaster, which led to ecological collapse, compounded the megacity's problems. Growing tensions with Eurasia soon exploded into all-out nuclear war, and while the southwestern subsector was largely spared the brunt of Eurasia's nukes, the megacity—along with the entire West Coast—was soon invaded by Eurasia and Euruska, Eurasia's ally. The megacity's southwestern subsector—where The Forever Winter takes place—soon became a stagnant frontline, with the Eurasia-Euruska alliance forces unable to make any further progress into the Continental U.S. while Europan forces failed to dislodge their opponents' foothold on the continent despite the rerouting of manpower and resources from other parts of Europa. Nevertheless, the Europan government, now run by AI leaders and commanders, soon hardened its totalitarianism—forged by years of suppression of widespread civil unrest before the war—to manage the chaos in the megacity; the Eurostate Wartime Management Authority and STRATCOM took over civil and military affairs in Lost Angels, respectively.
As all coastal population centers in the former United States were nuked early on in the war, the West Coast, except for Lost Angels, is essentially gone. Most of the civilian population either evacuated, fled, or died over the course of the war, with the stragglers either constructing hastily built shanty towns or carving out their own space in the sprawling underground tunnels of the megacity. This latter group of survivors later became known as the Scavengers or scavs for short, who used their unique skillsets and knowledge of the area to scour the battlefields of Lost Angels for water and other necessities, complete jobs for the factions, and possibly make a quick buck for themselves. Other survivors in the megacity either took up mercenary work, smuggling operations, looting and banditry, warlordism, cultism, or hunting rogue AI.
Consequently, Lost Angels is a symbol of the never-ending brutality, terror, horror, and chaos of the war. The back-and-forth between Europa, Eurasia, and Euruska soon took on a routine: the factions would fight during the day before moving underground at night to struggle for better positions the next day while the Night Shift rebuilt the city and scavenged dead bodies and other resources for future use. Underground automated factories churn out war machines by the hour; Eurasia and Euruska are also resupplied by sea or low orbit while Europa gets resupplied from other parts of the megastate, though such resupplies for both sides, along with long-range communications (which have been reduced to messages carried by drones as all satellites were destroyed at the start of the war) remain unreliable and haphazard. Current forces of the megastates' militaries within Lost Angels, mostly composed of geographically uninformed battalions insulated to their respective Area of Operations, are driven by desperate survival, totalitarian command structures, and task-based incentives. A portion of the armies are genuinely patriotic and/or indoctrinated warmongers, and while disillusionment and desertion are not uncommon, the war effort's effective morale is sustained by the aforementioned measures, with the addition of annual reinforcements of fresher battalions arriving from the home front.

Scavs are the 'ordinary citizens' of the world, living day to day as best they can, deep below the surface, somewhat safe from the never-ending war. Underground, they have built miles upon miles of interconnected settlements with their own working economies and cultures. Scavs survive off a mix of scavenging, bartering, and taking jobs from the warring factions.
What you scavenge, you keep, unless it's water of course. The surface offers plentiful amounts of scraps, equipment, and the occasional luxury; however, to survive on the surface is no easy feat. Scavs must weave in and out of violent, unpredictable battlefields, tuck themselves into the smallest crevices, sprint across the greatest of plains, and stay out of sight from powerful units, all to ensure that they may live to do it again. The art of a Scav is a fine one, but one that bears much responsibility.

Europa also fields a wide variety of vehicles, mechs, drones, and unique units, such as the Europan Merkava Body Tank, Europan Medium Mech, Europan Stilt Walker, Europan Tormentor, Europan Pyro, and Europan Red Baron Exo. These units are deployed to either shore up Europan forces or intimidate enemy forces.
Pointers (and headcanons):
Europans are usually either conscripted or willing volunteers.
They have normal blood.
Drug addiction runs rampant throughout the Europan Military, which could, maybe, explain why Europan footsoldiers could lug around the armor they wear.
They are generally more well-trained compared to the health advantages of Euruska and the numerical advantage of Eurasia.
The Europans in Lost Angels are nothing compared to the forces in mainland Europe and Africa.
Europa still has a functioning air force.
Europa possesses strategic laser weaponry. Gunhead units in Europan service were often pulled from old police stock and retrofitted for military use.
Lost Angels was once a fortress city before being hit by a Eurasian nuclear strike and then a sea and air invasion.
Poland, the Baltics, and parts of Ukraine are under Europan control. As seen with some Europan Ammo items, Ukraine seems to be a member state of Europa.
As seen in the game files, Europa controls Jerusalem, which most likely manufactures its Merkava tanks.
Europa is also confirmed, judging by its flag, to control the Balkans and Turkey.
Europa, or some unknown power, seems to have a presence in Africa capable of defeating Euruska’s feared Afro-Ruskan brigades. As stated in point five, the Europans in Afro-Eurasia seem to be much better trained and equipped.
Europa practices, literally, state-sanctioned cannibalism. Most Europan dead are often thrown into corpse grinders to be processed into food. It is unknown what happens to Euruskan or Eurasian dead, other than they are left behind (due to Euruskan blood being caustic and Eurasian bodies being totally inedible) or are scrapped for other reasons.
Europa has an almost Bushido-era-like warrior culture, worse than even current-day American warrior culture. Many soldiers who are killed in action are revered as martyrs and saints of the Europan cause.
Europa makes use of child soldiers, whether it be on the frontlines or in specialized roles such as tank and mech hunting, as seen with the Minor Age Adjustment Enlistment Act, in the map Lost Angels.
It took a combined force of Euruska and Eurasia to invade Europa, let alone mount a landing operation of Lost Angels.
People still do normal jobs for income on Europa, but there seems to generally be food insecurity, and healthcare insecurity across Europan cities.
With the appearance of Europan Assassins, Europa may possess (archaic) thermal or visual cloaking technology.
While an AI leading Europa's military does exist, called STRATCOM, or maybe it is the leader of STRATCOM, it seems a separate organization called Eurostate handles civilian matters.
Europan EXOs seem capable of very great feats of strength, as shown to be canonically able to rip turrets off of Euruskan T90s in the video “EXO Lifecycle”.

Pointers (and headcanons):
Eurasian cyborgs are usually either conscripted from the innumerable refugees, POWs, and criminals inside their borders.
Their soldiers appear to be using a nanofluid blood substitute.
Most units in Eurasia are non-sentient, or have had their intelligence dampened to the point of literal animalism.
However, units like proper Eurasian Cyborgs, (seemingly) Brawlers, Officers, Assaulters, and Pack Leaders (and the as of now, non-canonical Dragon Commander) can think for themselves.
As seen with the God Sniper, some Europans defect to Eurasia.
Eurasia fields the Type-10 Tank, unlike Euruska’s T-90 or Europa’s Merkava.
Eurasia is implied to frequently use nanomachine swarms, ala how Germany used poison gas in World War 1.
Eurasia is implied (or outright stated by the devs) to have heavy air superiority in Lost Angels.
Kowloon seems to still exist, as a sprawling market for both legal and Illegal goods called the “Kowloon Cyberflesh Market”.
The Eurasians put out messages, orders, intel, etc, through QR code, which is purposely unreadable to unaugmented Euruskans and Europans, called “ORGAS” by Eurasia.
The Euruskan-Eurasian combined forces seem to be an 'integrated command structure', as well as sharing logistics in Eurasia’s Low Orbit factories. The Euruskan questgiver, ВЛАДЕЛЕЦ, in some notable quests, tasks us to do missions for him, which in reality, is just him fulfilling orders from his Eurasian superiors. In this regard, it would appear that Eurasia, in fact, is the brains of the operation in most scenarios, with Euruska the brawns.

Eurasia's ally, Euruska, is a federation of former Slavic states and parts of Africa. They have taken the influence of Eurasia's biotechnology and pushed it to the breaking point... using living creatures as paint and sculpting their dementedly creative works of biomechanics.
Euruska is one of the three major Factions in The Forever Winter. Euruskan troops are small in variety: Euruskan Infantry and Euruskan Riders are the most common infantry, while rarer infantry, such as the Euruskan Sniper, Euruskan Shield Officer, and Euruskan Kotleta, are deployed for specific tasks. Euruska also deploys heavy units, such as the Euruskan Medium Mech, Euruskan Toothy Mech, and Euruskan Grabber, alongside its ground forces.
Pointers (and headcanons):
Euruskan soldiers are usually either conscripted from criminals or people unlucky enough to be caught in the yearly bioharvests. It is unknown if there are any volunteers.
Their soldiers seem to bleed synthetic, or synthetically enhanced, blood, which is apparently caustic to skin. Most likely enhanced to prevent infection from diseases or from Europan nanotech.
Most units in Euruska are rewarded, for good performance in combat, with cybernetic and biological augmentations (maybe as seen with the Shield Commander or Euruskan Officers).
As seen with Goldbrick, desertion seems to be at least semi-common among Euruskan ranks.
Euruska most likely controls most former Soviet territories, along with Syria, Iraq, and most likely parts of Iran, and likely has territory in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and once had territory in Algeria. I don't believe Euruska controls central or South Africa, most likely due to resource strain.
Euruska is only in Lost Angels to shore up (providing armor, artillery, and strategic equipment) Eurasian forces (infantry, air, and tactical equipment) after Eurasia incurred heavy losses during their beach invasion.
Euruska actively harvests its citizens for war material.
Units like Toothy, the T90, and the Orgamech seem to be noticeably older than most other Euruskan Units, such as the Mech, Drone, or Grabber. This age suggests that the Toothy and T90s were among the first Euruskan units during the war, and for the Orgamech, the first biomechanical units.
Euruska is governed, in terms of its government, by a league of AI “Tsars” who style themselves after the Imperial Russian nobility. Whereas the war is commanded by a “Matronya Committee”.
The Euruskans view their war as a Holy Crusade against Europa, with the Orthodox Church (now most likely state-controlled) declaring a “Eurasian Crusade” against Europa.
The Euruskans view Europa as the second coming of Nazi Germany.
One of the Euruskan Characters, Father Malenko, is a part of a “Euruskan Steel Diocese”, which seems to lend itself to Orthodoxy being state-controlled and being retooled as a device of control, even venerating arms companies like ZenitCo as “Saint Zenit”.
