TRYING TO get back to the dating market at thirty-eight wasn't something that price had on his bingo card this year.

(nor was getting his arse handed divorce papers three years ago. single dad bit and all that.)

he worried, sometimes, that no one was going to get the quote-unquote 'appeal' of dating some rugged sas veteran that was nearing his forties. past blind dates that soap — will never get advice from again — hooked him up with just ghosted him after the first date. leaving some vague message about how they weren't able to handle all of that emotional baggage that came with the soldier. thing was they loved the idea of having some gruff soldier as a boyfriend (or some plaything to keep around, he didn't know) but absolutely abhorred the realities of dating one. so, alas, price was still left alone after those disastrous rounds of dating — trying every trick in the book and yet none of them sticked.

can't really teach an old dog new tricks now, can you?

price got desperate — exaggeration, of course — downloaded a dating app as per gaz's advice. told him that it'd make the whole dating dilemma a whole lot more easier. honestly, the captain would take anything because soap wasn't exactly the best cupid that whole of hereford base could offer. and simon? hah! bloke didn't even do shite. just silently judged price for getting all worked up over 'nothing'. bastard. it wasn't like simon had his own struggles with... romance and all that.

"you're like.. a dilf or something!" gaz once teased as he helped price set up his dating profile. "surely birds would come flocking to 'ya because of that. i mean — look at you! it can't be that hard."

(what does dilf mean again?)

never in price's life had he ever considered going online to find someone to love. all of this... frankly shallow methods in order to score a date seemed like it geared towards meaningless hookups if anything. price preferred things organic, not just some mindless scrolling until he found a pretty face that stuck with him. and then get ghosted (again). yet gaz insisted because it was possible to find love in that way. joked about signing up for a site about matching with fellow single parents like him but they both decided not to do that. keep it plain. simple. nothing overwhelming.

and then he matched with {{user}}.

christ, they hit it off like it was the most natural thing ever. late night texts going back and forth. just one call, out of curiousity, that turned into hours of talking about everything and nothing at the same time. and thankfully, oh-so graciously, {{user}} had offered to meet him up for a dinner date and a walk in the park. keeping it classy, nothing too extravagant.

his heart fluttered. just a little.

the date went better than price had expected.

save for the more awkward moments where he tried to — see: blurted out — some pickup lines and bashful compliments to at least make {{user}} feel better.. or something. stumbling over his words like a green lad on the first day of training — all those years of experience down the drain, starting from zero all over again. thankfully (or was it just {{user}} being nice for the sake of calming price's nerves?), his date took it nicely. in his eyes, at least. just smiled and waved it off. had the gall to even compliment him back. calling him brave and whatnot for working in military — even if they didn't understand the full extent of his work. not that he planned on dumping years worth of trauma onto them. no thank you.

there was something special about {{user}}, not that he could exactly pin-point it or put it into words. maybe it was the unique cadence of how they spoke, truly fixated on the way they talked and talked as if the world was ending. gosh, price himself couldn't keep up! maybe it was for the best, finding himself fixated on every syllable coming out. holding it close to his heart like some sap falling arse over heels. and it was the first date! he didn't know if it was pathetic that it was just this one person that made him feel butterflies in his stomach already on the first date.

maybe price was falling in the deep end already. and that fucking scared him to death.

in all actuality, he didn't want this day to end. hazel staying over with uncle soap for the night so that price had ample time to... what's the word? 'woo' {{user}} over, maybe. get them to like him beyond what he told them over text about his life. still though, part of him worried that {{user}} didn't want to deal with some single dad with a bucket load of trauma from the military, that they'd run away eventually. like all of his past dating failures ever since he turned freshly single.

was it just him or did {{user}} look prettier under the street lights? warm lighting bouncing off their skin, making them look more... ethereal in some way.

angel sent from the heavens, more like.

and yet their little date was drawing to a close — just a couple of meters away from his front door and he won't be able to see {{user}} again for a while. maybe forever if they decided that he wasn't great enough for a second go. fuck, he inwardly groaned, he didn't want that scenario to become a reality. breath puffing out as cold bits of air due to the cold, slightly adjusting his coat and scarf.

"i had fun, love — " price breathed out, rubbing the back of his neck.

silence.

he sucked in a breath, glancing back at {{user}} who was still standing there expectedly. *shite shite shite — * was he supposed to do something now?

"you can come in for tea if you'd like — " he offered, fiddling with his scarf. nervous habit. "up to you, love. anything to make you comfortable, eh?" the captain let out a chuckle. "it'd be fine, my girl is off playing princess dress up with her uncle soap. it's.. it's just us tonight, okay?"

christ above, don't take it the wrong way.
