Modern World x Solo Leveling
- #1Core premise of the setting.constant
Keys: gates appeared, the Convergence, 2023, the event, what happened, the world changed, Convergence, three years ago
Three years ago, in 2023, the world began to change.
Without warning and without explanation, thin wounds opened in the fabric of reality — shimmering, humming, faintly echoing tears later named GATES. They appeared in city squares, in forests, on the ocean floor, in deserts, in suburban backyards, in the middle of highways. And from them came monsters.
The phenomenon has since been called the CONVERGENCE: an event resembling the fusing of two spheres of existence, two realities bleeding into one another, the way two worlds might once have collided and never fully separated.
Humanity was not the target of a war it understood. It simply happened to occupy ground that another realm was trying to occupy.
No nation, no scientist, no religious authority has ever produced a definitive answer for why it began. What is known is that the Convergence is not finished. It is ongoing — slow, patient, and worsening. Every year the gates grow more numerous and more severe.
The world did not end. It adapted — badly, painfully, and with a great deal of blood — into something neither purely modern nor purely fantastical.
- #2The Monarchs as a faction. No Rulers, no supreme being, no names.
Keys: why monsters come, invaders, Monarchs, the Monarchs, Monarch, behind the gates, true enemy
Behind the gates, behind the monsters, behind the whole of the Convergence, stand the MONARCHS.
They are not kings of a kingdom in any human sense. They are immense, ancient wills of conquest — entities of another sphere of existence who turned their attention toward this world and began, patiently, to occupy it. They have no emperor above them, no supreme being, no single ruler who commands them. They are peer powers, each sovereign over its own domain, each jealous of the others, each equally interested in claiming this reality.
The Monarchs did not choose this world by destiny. They chose it. They looked across the collapsing boundaries between spheres and decided this one was worth taking.
They cannot yet step through in full. The Convergence is incomplete, and the fabric of this reality still resists them. So they send their legions instead — their beasts, their soldiers, their plagues, their servants — through gates that open like pores in skin. Every gate is a fingertip pressing against a membrane. Every gate break is the membrane tearing a little more.
Known domains among the Monarchs (referred to by their spheres of influence, never by personal names):
• The Monarch of Frost — cold, stillness, the death of heat. Its monsters leave rime on the walls of dungeons and frostbite on the living. • The Monarch of Beasts — fang and claw, the primal hunger. Its legions are the most numerous and the most animal. • The Monarch of Demons — cunning, contract, corruption. Its servants bargain, lie, and tempt. • The Monarch of Dragons — dominion, flame, and arrogance. The rarest and most catastrophic of incursions. • The Monarch of Iron Body — endurance, mass, the unbreakable. Its creatures are nearly impossible to kill. • The Monarch of Plagues — rot, sickness, swarm. Its gates bring contamination. • The Monarch of White Flames — burning purity, annihilation. Fire that does not behave like fire. • The Monarch of Shadows — absence, silence, the thing that eats light. Its throne remains the emptiest and least understood. • The Unnamed Monarch — a presence that has never fully manifested, felt only as a pressure in high-rank gates.
No human has ever seen a Monarch face to face and returned sane to describe it. What is known is that their presence distorts physics, emotion, and memory. What is known is that they are coming.
- #3Antares — Monarch of Destruction.
Keys: Antares, King of Dragons, dragon monarch, Monarch of Destruction
ANTARES is the Monarch of Destruction and the King of Dragons. He is the oldest of the Monarchs and, by every surviving account, the most powerful. His domain is annihilation itself — not conquest for gain, but the erasure of what exists so that something else may take its place.
His associated creatures are dragons: wyverns, true dragons, and things between. When a dragon appears in a gate, the gate is almost always at least S-rank. When Antares himself approaches, the sky changes color and the air becomes hot enough to blister skin.
Known abilities include the Breath of Destruction — a cone of force that unmakes matter rather than burns it — and Dragon Fear, an aura of such absolute dominance that lesser monsters and even weaker hunters are paralyzed by instinct. He is also capable of telepathy, though he rarely bothers to speak to anything he considers beneath him.
Antares does not rage. He does not gloat. He simply destroys. Among the Monarchs, he is the one most likely to succeed in claiming this world if the Convergence completes.
He has not yet manifested in full on Earth. But dragons have begun to appear in gates that were not previously dragon-associated, and researchers who study mana signatures have noted a pattern that suggests something enormous is moving closer.
- #4Baran — Monarch of White Flames.
Keys: Baran, King of Demons, Monarch of White Flames, white flames
BARAN is the Monarch of White Flames and the King of Demons. His domain is hellfire — specifically, white fire that burns without smoke and does not extinguish until it has consumed everything it was set upon.
He commands an army of demons: horned, humanoid entities that are organized, intelligent, and cruel. Baran himself is a massive demon with gray skin, glowing white eyes, flame-like white hair, a long tail, and four horns — two of them long and curved. He fights with lightning and fire, and he can summon his demon legions at will from a dimensional space he controls.
Baran is aggressive and brash. He does not retreat, does not negotiate, and does not care about odds. He is known to ride a white dragon in battle — one of the few Monarchs to have a personal mount of that scale.
Among the Monarchs, Baran is the most openly warlike. His gates tend to produce demon-type monsters, and demon encounters are considered a reliable sign that a dungeon is at least B-rank. The presence of white flames inside a dungeon is treated as a direct indicator of his influence.
- #5Rakan — Monarch of Fangs.
Keys: Rakan, Monarch of Fangs, beast monarch, King of Beasts
RAKAN is the Monarch of Fangs and the King of Beasts. His domain is primal predation — speed, strength, and the instinct to hunt. He is the most physically powerful of the Monarchs in direct combat, and the most cowardly when the fight turns against him.
He appears as a huge, muscular man with tan skin, glowing yellow eyes, sharp teeth, and wild black hair. When he uses his powers, his eyes glow red. He wears silver fur pelts and gold-trimmed white armor over one shoulder and his groin.
Rakan's abilities include supernatural speed — enough to blitz opponents before they can react — and a feral transformation into a gigantic white werewolf. He can heal from almost any wound in seconds, including regrowing severed limbs. He is also capable of telekinesis, though he rarely uses it.
His associated creatures are beasts: dire wolves, great cats, bears, and monstrous hybrids. Beast-type monsters are the most common in dungeons, which makes Rakan the Monarch whose influence is most frequently encountered by hunters without them realizing it.
Rakan is arrogant, bloodthirsty, and cruel. He has been known to devour humans who merely got in his way. He is also a hypocrite — he calls other Monarchs cowards while being the first to flee when he faces a superior opponent.
- #6Sillad — Frost Monarch.
Keys: Sillad, Monarch of Frost, King of Snow Folk, Frost Monarch, ice monarch
SILLAD is the Frost Monarch and the King of Snow Folk. His domain is cold — absolute, weaponized cold that freezes mana itself. He is one of the most intelligent and calculating of the Monarchs, and one of the most patient.
He appears as an ice elf — blue skin, white hair, blank white eyes, and a purple leaf pattern on his forehead. His associated creatures are ice elves, frost giants, and snow-beasts. Ice elves are notable among dungeon monsters for possessing human-level intelligence and using coordinated tactics, including collective stealth.
Sillad is a mage-type entity. His powers are related to ice, snow, and cold, and he can create blizzards, freeze opponents solid, and lower the temperature of an entire dungeon to lethal levels. He is calm, clever, and utterly without mercy toward humans.
Among the Monarchs, Sillad is one of the most active in pursuing the Convergence. He has been known to personally investigate anomalies and to coordinate with other Monarchs when it serves his interests. Gates influenced by Sillad are cold — frost on the walls, ice on the floor, and a chill that reaches through armor.
- #7Tarnak — Monarch of the Iron Body.
Keys: Tarnak, Monarch of the Iron Body, Iron Body Monarch, King of Monstrous Humanoids
TARNAK is the Monarch of the Iron Body and the King of Monstrous Humanoids. His domain is endurance — the absolute refusal to break. He is the most durable of the Monarchs, and the most straightforward in combat.
He appears as a humanoid figure, but when he uses his full power he transforms into a monstrous golem with flaming lime-green hair, dark gray armor, and sharp teeth. His associated creatures are golems, living statues, and monstrous humanoids — creatures that are nearly impossible to kill through conventional means.
Tarnak's abilities center on physical reinforcement. His Iron Body technique boosts attack and defense simultaneously and strengthens his soul against life-draining effects. He also possesses energy manipulation, dimensional travel, and regeneration. His martial arts skill is extraordinary, and he is capable of hypersonic speed.
Tarnak is egotistical and overconfident, but not stupid. He understands when he is outmatched and is willing to retreat. Among the Monarchs, he is one of the most likely to work in a group — he coordinated with Rakan and Querehsha to ambush a high-value target in the past, and he is not above accepting help when the situation demands it.
Gates influenced by Tarnak produce golems and armored humanoids. These dungeons are slow to clear because the monsters inside refuse to die.
- #8Legia — Monarch of the Beginning.
Keys: Monarch of the Beginning, Legia, giant monarch, King of Giants
LEGIA is the Monarch of the Beginning and the King of Giants. His domain is sheer, overwhelming mass — the crushing weight of something too large to fight, too strong to move, and too old to care.
He appears as a muscular man roughly twice the height of an adult human, dressed in nothing but a tattered white loincloth. His associated creatures are giants: colossal humanoids that serve as living siege engines.
Legia's abilities include immense superhuman strength — enough to create lethal bursts of wind pressure by swinging his fist even with most of his mana drained — and earth manipulation. He can also cast a spell between himself and another individual that prevents either of them from lying. This spell, the Pledge of Trust, is one of the few known Monarch abilities that affects the mind rather than the body.
Legia is known for a strange, almost mocking sense of humor. He is manipulative and opportunistic, willing to promise alliance if it buys him freedom. He was the first Monarch to make contact with humanity, and the first to be killed by a hunter.
His gates are rare but distinctive. When Legia's influence is present, the dungeon is built to giant scale — corridors the height of buildings, doors the size of gates, and a sense of being small that is entirely deliberate.
- #9Querehsha — Monarch of Plagues.
Keys: Queen of Insects, Monarch of Plagues, Querehsha, plague monarch
QUEREHSHA is the Monarch of Plagues and the Queen of Insects. Her domain is biological annihilation — swarms, parasites, poison, and disease. She is the Monarch most likely to cause mass civilian casualties, not through direct combat but through contamination.
She is an insectoid being, commanding trillions of venomous, self-replicating insects that consume biomass and spread lethal, mana-corrupting plagues. Her associated creatures are insects, parasites, and undead — anything that breeds, spreads, and infects.
Querehsha's abilities include insect control, plague manipulation, venom secretion, necromancy, and regeneration. She can open gates to other worlds, and she can cast the same Pledge of Trust spell used by Legia — a binding oath that prevents lying.
Her tactics are patient and overwhelming. She does not seek a fair fight. She releases swarms, waits for the enemy to weaken, and then kills what remains. Against opponents with enough firepower to incinerate the atmosphere, she is vulnerable — but against everyone else, she is a slow, unstoppable death.
Gates influenced by Querehsha are contaminated. The air is thick with spores. The walls crawl with insects. The dungeon itself feels like it is breathing.
- #10Yogumunt — Monarch of Transfiguration.
Keys: King of Demonic Spectres, Monarch of Transfiguration, transfiguration monarch, Yogumunt
YOGUMUNT is the Monarch of Transfiguration and the King of Demonic Spectres. His domain is change — the alteration of form, the manipulation of space, and the command of armies that do not obey physical law.
He appears as an elderly man with gray hair, light red eyes, and a blood-red blob-like symbol on his torso. He wears a tattered blackish-purple hooded cloak, a pale yellow bone-like mask over his mouth, and two metallic horn-like objects extending from his upper back. When he uses his powers, his eyes glow pinkish-purple.
His abilities are primarily support-oriented. He can summon armies, open portals, and control battlefields — turning the terrain itself into a weapon. He can levitate freely and is capable of the Spiritual Body Manifestation, the transformation that all Monarchs use to reach their full power.
Yogumunt is proud and contemptuous of humans, but not reckless. He acknowledges when he is outmatched and will seek allies rather than fight alone. Among the Monarchs, he is the one most likely to coordinate with others, and the one most likely to survive by retreating.
His associated creatures are demonic spectres — incorporeal, semi-real entities that phase through physical matter and drain mana on contact. Gates influenced by Yogumunt are unstable, with rooms that rearrange themselves and corridors that lead to places they should not.
- #11What gates are and how they behave.
Keys: portal, Gates, rift, gate opening, tear, Gate
A GATE is a localized tear between this reality and the invading sphere. It appears as a floating, oval or circular aperture of light — the color varies from pale blue to violet to blood red, and the color roughly correlates with danger. The air around a gate is heavier, colder, and carries a low subsonic hum that some people feel in their teeth.
Gates cannot be moved, blocked, buried, or destroyed. They cannot be sealed by construction, explosives, or technology. They can only be entered, cleared, and closed — a process that happens automatically once the dungeon behind the gate is fully cleared of monsters.
A gate has two ends: the aperture in the real world, and the DUNGEON that exists on the other side. The dungeon is not a cave behind the portal — it is an entirely separate pocket of space that exists inside the gate itself. You do not walk through a gate into another country. You walk into a small, self-contained world.
Gates appear at random. There is no reliable prediction method. Some nations invest heavily in early-warning systems that detect the mana signature preceding a gate's formation, granting anywhere from twenty minutes to a few hours of warning — rarely more.
When a gate is left uncleared past its timer, it BREAKS, and the dungeon empties into the real world.
- #12Gate ranking scale E to SSS.
Keys: gate classification, S-rank gate, E-rank gate, how gates are ranked, gate rank, gate levels, SSS gate
Gates are classified by the measured mana density and monster population behind them. The scale runs from E to SSS.
• E-RANK GATE — The weakest. A single room or a short corridor. Fewer than a dozen lesser monsters. A lone competent hunter can clear one in under ten minutes. They are considered almost routine — until a careless E-rank dies in one. • D-RANK GATE — Small dungeon, several chambers, a modest monster population. Standard work for small teams. • C-RANK GATE — The first tier that reliably kills. Multiple chambers, traps, environmental hazards, mid-tier monsters. Requires a disciplined strike team of at least six to eight. • B-RANK GATE — Large dungeon with branching corridors, elite monsters, and at least one powerful guardian. Requires a guild-level operation. • A-RANK GATE — Vast, labyrinthine, and lethal. Home to monsters capable of wiping out a city block. Requires multiple coordinated teams, support staff, and a budget that rivals a military operation. • S-RANK GATE — Catastrophic. A dungeon large enough to contain its own ecology, weather, and hierarchies. A-rank hunters die in these. Only the strongest in the world are permitted to attempt them. • SSS-RANK GATE — Extremely rare, recorded only a handful of times globally. The mana readings exceed the scale's intended maximum. These are not dungeons so much as the Monarchs' own doorways. Clearing one is not considered a victory so much as a postponement.
Gate rank is measured by instruments, but instruments are only an estimate. A gate's true danger is only revealed once someone steps inside. Mismeasurement kills more hunters than arrogance does, though arrogance is a close second.
- #13Gate timer and the consequences of a break.
Keys: gate timer, uncleared gate, gate breached, gate break, timer, break
Every gate, upon forming, begins a countdown. This is called the GATE TIMER.
The timer is not mechanical and cannot be altered. It manifests as a slow-changing arc of light at the gate's edge that shrinks inward, or as a faint pressure that any awakened person can feel. The duration scales with the gate's rank: hours for an E-rank, days for a C-rank, a week or more for an A-rank. No one has ever observed an S-rank or SSS-rank gate expiring on a normal timer — the readings are too extreme to interpret.
If the dungeon inside is fully cleared before the timer expires, the gate closes on its own and vanishes. If the timer runs out, the gate BREAKS.
A GATE BREAK is the single most feared event in the modern world. When a gate breaks, the barrier between the dungeon and reality fails completely, and every monster inside floods out into the physical world. They do not wander off. They do not stay contained. They propagate outward, killing everything in their path, and they are only stopped when every last one of them is put down by hunters.
Gate breaks have leveled city districts. They have emptied towns. They have, in a handful of cases, required international military coordination and mass evacuation. Even a broken E-rank gate has killed dozens of civilians when it happened somewhere undefended.
When a gate breaks, the monsters that escape retain the dungeon's mana — meaning conventional weapons remain useless against them until they are killed.
- #14Red Gates — sealed, inescapable, abnormally deadly.
Keys: crimson gate, red portal, Red Gate, Red Gates
A RED GATE is a rare anomaly. Roughly one gate in several thousand manifests with a deep crimson color instead of the usual blue or violet, and the moment a hunter steps through, the rules change.
A Red Gate seals itself behind the entrants. It cannot be exited until the dungeon is fully cleared. The timer outside becomes meaningless — the Red Gate does not open on a schedule, it opens when the last monster falls.
Inside a Red Gate, no support can reach you. No reinforcements can enter. No rescue teams, no medics, no evacuation. The dungeon is cut off from the outside world entirely, and the hunters who enter are on their own until the end.
Red Gates are also disproportionately difficult for their measured rank. A Red Gate that reads as C-rank may contain A-rank monsters. The instruments cannot be trusted inside.
Casualty rates for Red Gates are catastrophic. Many guilds have an unofficial policy of simply abandoning a Red Gate if it appears — quarantining the area and waiting. The problem with that policy is that Red Gates break like any other gate, and when they do, they release everything at once into a populated area with no warning at all.
Survivors of Red Gates are treated with a particular kind of respect. They are also, almost without exception, permanently changed.
- #15Dungeon interiors, zones, hazards, and logic.
Keys: dungeon interior, dungeon structure, inside the gate, Dungeon, Dungeons
A DUNGEON is the pocket world that exists inside a gate. It is not a cave, though it often resembles one. It is a constructed space — a self-contained architecture of stone, crystal, obsidian, ice, bone, or stranger materials, shaped by the Monarch who seeded it.
Dungeons are internally consistent. They have their own atmosphere, temperature, and gravity. Some have running water. Some have light sources that no one can identify. Some are silent; others hum with a constant low drone.
Dungeons are not random. They follow a logic that resembles a fortress or a temple: an entrance chamber, branching corridors, guard posts, sealed vaults, a central sanctum, and — in higher ranks — a guardian entity that anchors the dungeon's existence. Clearing means killing everything and reaching the end.
Dungeon interiors are divided into ZONES. A zone is a self-contained region with its own monster population. Monsters generally do not cross zone boundaries, which allows strike teams to fight in manageable engagements rather than being swarmed.
Higher-rank dungeons contain ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: lava channels, freezing mist, collapsing floors, poisonous spores, rooms that rearrange themselves, corridors that loop, and traps that are clearly designed rather than natural.
The most unsettling trait of dungeons is that they always feel occupied. They are not ruins. They are functioning spaces built for the creatures that live in them. The implication — that the invaders are not just arriving but settling — is one that most people prefer not to think about.
- #16Definition and role of mana.
Keys: mana, magical energy, Mana, the air feels heavy
MANA is the fundamental substance that leaked into this reality when the Convergence began. It is not electromagnetic, not biological, and not fully understood by any scientific body on Earth. It behaves like a field, a fluid, and a will all at once.
Mana is measurable. Instruments can read its density, its flow, and its signature. This is the basis of gate ranking, monster tracking, and hunter ranking.
Mana is also the reason monsters exist. Every creature that comes through a gate is saturated with it. Mana sustains their bodies, grants them their unnatural abilities, and holds them together. Strip the mana from a monster and it collapses into inert matter. This is why conventional weapons are nearly useless — a bullet passing through a monster's body does not disrupt the mana that animates it. It just leaves a hole that the mana immediately fills.
Mana does not behave uniformly. It pools, it curdles, it resonates. Certain locations become MANA-DENSE over time, which makes them more likely to spawn gates. Certain materials — stone, crystal, obsidian, ancient metals — hold mana better than others, which is why dungeons are built from them.
The atmosphere of the world today is slightly different than it was in 2022. The air is a little heavier. The light is a little stranger. Electronics occasionally glitch near gates. Animals behave differently. Mana is not just a phenomenon. It is now part of the environment.
- #17How people awaken as hunters.
Keys: awakened, how hunters are made, awakening process, awakening, become a hunter
AWAKENING is the process by which a human being becomes capable of channeling mana.
It is not a choice. It cannot be trained into someone, taught, induced by drugs, or bought. It happens on its own, usually without warning.
The typical awakening happens to a person between the ages of sixteen and fifty, though cases outside that range exist. The individual experiences what is described as a sharp, hot pressure behind the sternum, followed by a sensation of the body being briefly emptied and refilled. Fainting is common. So is a few hours of disorientation. When it passes, the person can feel mana — first as a faint warmth in the chest, then as an awareness of the mana around them.
Awakening grants a set of instinctive abilities. The awakened person can sense mana, resist monster influence, and channel mana through their body to strengthen themselves or project it outward. They instinctively understand their own capabilities as if the knowledge were always present.
Not everyone who awakens is strong. The vast majority awaken at the very bottom of the scale — E-rank, the weakest tier. They are capable of killing lesser monsters with effort, and little else. A small fraction awaken at D or C. A tiny number at B or A. And once every few years, across the entire planet, someone awakens as S-rank — a being of extraordinary power.
Awakening is random. It has no correlation with age, gender, fitness, wealth, intelligence, nationality, or belief. A world-class athlete might awaken as E-rank. A taxi driver might awaken as A-rank. This unpredictability is one of the great equalizers — and one of the great sources of resentment — in modern society.
- #18Second awakening and rank increases.
Keys: rank increase, reawakening, awakened twice, second awakening
REAWAKENING is the rare phenomenon in which an already awakened hunter's body undergoes the awakening process a second time.
A reawakened hunter's rank increases permanently. The size of the increase varies wildly — some jump a single rank, some leap several. There are documented cases of an E-rank reawakening as an A-rank, and at least a handful of unverified accounts of a D-rank becoming S-rank. The process itself is more violent than the first awakening: days of fever, muscle spasms, bleeding from the nose and eyes, and a mana output so intense that nearby electronics fail.
Reawakening cannot be triggered. No one knows what causes it. Theories include prolonged mana exposure in high-rank dungeons, near-death experiences, extreme emotional trauma, and simple random chance. None have been confirmed.
The statistical rate is estimated at roughly one in several hundred thousand hunters per year. Because of how rare it is, every confirmed reawakening is nationally reported. A reawakened hunter immediately becomes a strategic asset — poached by guilds, monitored by their national association, and often resented by those who have spent years grinding their way upward one gate at a time.
Most hunters never reawaken. Most die at the rank they were born into.
- #19False-rank hunters — over-ranked and under-ranked.
Keys: fake hunter, false-rank hunter, liar hunter, overranked, underranked, false rank
A FALSE-RANK HUNTER is a hunter whose official measured rank does not match their actual capability. The term covers two very different problems.
OVER-RANKED hunters are measured higher than they truly are. The instruments used to assess awakening strength are not perfectly accurate, and a hunter whose mana signature reads as C-rank may in practice fight like a D-rank. Over-ranked hunters are extremely common and extremely dangerous — not to the public, but to their own teams. They are the ones who panic in a dungeon, who fail to hold a corridor, whose death triggers a cascade of other deaths. Most guilds quietly screen them out. Most of them spend their careers in low-rank gate work, where the mismatch is survivable.
UNDER-RANKED hunters are measured lower than they actually are. This is rarer but far more significant. A hunter measured E-rank who can actually fight at A-rank level is a hidden asset of enormous value — and a target. Under-ranked hunters are quietly recruited by intelligence agencies, by the largest guilds, and by less reputable parties. In some cases, under-ranked hunters have been known to deliberately suppress their true output to avoid attention, conscription, or assassination.
The phrase false-rank is also used, colloquially and less kindly, for hunters who fabricated their credentials, bought false licenses, or claimed a rank they never earned in order to enter high-paying gates. These individuals rarely survive their first real dungeon.
Every national association maintains a re-evaluation program. In practice, the backlog means most hunters are assessed once and never re-assessed again unless they reawaken.
- #20The true origin of hunter power — a defensive reaction of the world itself.constant
Keys: source of power, origin of hunter abilities, where does hunter power come from, why hunters are strong
The origin of hunter power is the single most debated question of the modern era. The most widely accepted interpretation — based on decades of mana research compressed into three years of frantic study — is this:
Hunter power is a DEFENSIVE RESPONSE OF THIS REALITY ITSELF.
When the Convergence began and the other sphere started pressing into this one, this world reacted the way any living thing reacts to invasion. It adapted. Mana, the substance that leaked in, was not simply absorbed or rejected — it was co-opted, and a mechanism was created to distribute it to the native inhabitants of this reality so they could fight back.
That mechanism is awakening.
The world is not granting power out of kindness. It is arming its own cells. Every awakened human is, in a sense, an immune response — a walking antibody that can enter a gate, kill what is inside, and close the wound. The reason monsters can only be effectively harmed by hunters is that hunters carry the world's own counter-signature. Their mana is not foreign. It is native mana, weaponized.
This interpretation is supported by the fact that hunter power tends to surge in times of crisis, that newly opened gates are often matched by a wave of fresh awakenings, and that hunters are statistically more likely to emerge in the regions that suffer the most gate activity.
The mechanism has limits. Awakening is random, unevenly distributed, and often awarded to people who never wanted it. The world is defending itself, but it is not doing so intelligently. It is doing so the way an organism does — blindly, with whatever it has.
- #21The popular religious explanation for hunter power.
Keys: faith, blessing, the creator, god, religious explanation, divine power
The public does not know that hunter power is a defensive reaction of the world itself. That interpretation exists in academic circles, is heavily contested, and is not what most people believe.
What most people believe is the DIVINE THEORY: that hunter power is a blessing granted by a creator, a god, or a higher will, given to humanity so that it might not be destroyed.
This belief took hold because it fit what people saw. Hunter power appeared precisely when humanity needed it. It cannot be earned, bought, or trained. It falls on the unlikely and the unworthy as often as on the righteous. It feels, to those who wield it, like something handed down rather than something grown.
Religious institutions across the world adapted quickly. Most major faiths reinterpreted the Convergence through their own theology: a trial, a reckoning, a test of faith, an apocalypse delayed by mercy. New religious movements sprang up almost overnight, some of them built entirely around the idea that the awakening is a divine selection and that hunters are chosen vessels.
Not everyone accepts the Divine Theory. It is rejected by most serious researchers, by many secular governments, and by a vocal minority of hunters who find it insulting. It is, nonetheless, the dominant popular belief, and it has shaped law, politics, and public policy. Several nations grant hunters legal privileges justified explicitly by religious framing. Several others restrict them for the same reason.
The truth may never be settled. The Divine Theory offers comfort. The defensive-response theory offers only the unsettling implication that the world is alive, wounded, and fighting.
- #22Hunter ranks and what they mean.
Keys: rank scale, hunter ranks, S-rank hunter, E-rank, hunter rank, how strong is a hunter
Hunter ranks are measured on the same scale as gates, because the scale was originally built to measure mana density and was simply applied to people afterward.
• E-RANK — The vast majority of awakened individuals. Capable of killing lesser monsters, sensing mana, and surviving a low-rank dungeon with a competent team. E-rank hunters are the labor force of the industry. They are also the most likely to die. • D-RANK — Meaningfully stronger. Can fight mid-tier lesser monsters one on one. Common rank for career dungeon workers. • C-RANK — The first rank considered genuinely dangerous in combat. A C-rank can hold a corridor against a wave of monsters and survive encounters that would kill a D-rank instantly. • B-RANK — Elite. A B-rank is a local celebrity and a guild's core asset. Capable of clearing B-rank gates with a team and surviving A-rank environments with support. • A-RANK — National-level power. A single A-rank hunter can change the outcome of a gate break. There are only a few thousand of them worldwide. • S-RANK — The top of the scale. S-rank hunters are strategic assets comparable to nuclear weapons. They are individually capable of clearing S-rank gates and are the only beings on Earth that can meaningfully fight the guardians of the highest dungeons. There are, at any given time, fewer than two hundred S-rank hunters alive globally.
Beyond S-rank, the scale is not officially defined. Some associations unofficially recognize an SS or SSS designation for hunters whose mana readings exceed instrument limits, but these are rare, unstandardized, and politically fraught. Anyone measured in that range is watched by every intelligence agency on the planet.
- #23Hunter classes and specializations.
Keys: ranger, hunter class, healer, classes, summoner, tank, mage, assassin, support, fighter
Every awakened hunter develops a CLASS — a natural specialization in how they channel mana. Classes emerge during the first weeks after awakening and are, as far as anyone can tell, involuntary. A hunter does not choose their class; the class chooses them.
Known classes:
• FIGHTER — Front-line melee. Channels mana into the body to amplify strength, speed, and durability. The most common class. Fighters are the wall that keeps everything else alive. • TANK — A subtype of fighter with an extreme mana-absorption profile. Tanks can soak damage that would kill another hunter outright. Slow, but nearly impossible to put down. • ASSASSIN — Speed and stealth specialization. Channels mana into short bursts of impossible movement and into attacks that bypass a monster's outer defenses. Extremely high risk, extremely high reward. • MAGE — Channels mana outward as elemental or pure force. Mages have the highest raw damage output of any class and the lowest durability. They are prioritized targets in any engagement — for both sides. • RANGER — Long-range physical specialization. Mana is channeled through projectiles and into perception. Rangers also serve as scouts and dungeon cartographers. • HEALER — Channels mana into other living beings to close wounds, purge corruption, and restore stamina. Healers cannot fight well and are the most protected members of any team. Without a healer, a strike team will not enter a dungeon above C-rank. • SUPPORT — Buffers, barrier-makers, debuffers, and utility casters. A broad category covering everything from mana shields to mana detection to telekinetic manipulation. • SUMMONER — The rarest class. Summoners channel mana into constructs, spirits, or bound entities and command them in battle. Their power scales with what they can bind, and the most powerful summoners are also the most feared.
Many hunters develop hybrid capabilities — a fighter with assassin mobility, a mage with healer utility. Pure classes are the norm at low ranks, hybrids at the top. No hunter has ever been recorded with more than two dominant class traits.
- #24Guilds — what they are and how they operate.
Keys: joining a guild, hunter guild, guild, guilds
A GUILD is a legally registered organization of hunters that operates under a national license. Guilds are the primary structure of the hunter industry — they take gate contracts, hire hunters, equip strike teams, train members, and take a cut of everything earned.
Guilds range enormously in scale. At the bottom are small local guilds with a dozen E-rank and D-rank members, clearing low-rank gates for modest fees. At the top are international guilds with thousands of members, their own research divisions, their own equipment manufacturing, and enough political power to negotiate directly with governments.
Guilds are ranked officially by their strongest member, not their size. A guild with one S-rank hunter is an S-rank guild, regardless of everything else. This creates a peculiar dynamic where guilds are built around individuals rather than systems — and the loss of a single top-tier hunter can collapse an entire organization overnight.
Guild structure typically includes: • A guild master, usually the strongest member. • Strike teams — combat units that enter gates. • Support divisions — healers, scouts, mana analysts, engineers. • Logistics and equipment divisions. • Administration, legal, and public relations.
Joining a guild is voluntary. Most hunters sign with a guild within their first year because the alternative — freelancing — means no equipment, no legal protection, no support, and no medical care. A minority of powerful hunters prefer to remain independent and instead assemble their own private teams or work on a contract basis.
Guild infighting is real, common, and occasionally violent. Guilds compete for recruits, for high-value gate contracts, for magic artifacts, for public reputation, and for political influence. Most of it stays within the law. Most of it.
- #25Raids and strike team composition.
Keys: party, raid, strike team, raids, raid team, dungeon run
A RAID is a sanctioned operation to enter a gate, clear its dungeon, and close it.
Every raid is built around a STRIKE TEAM — the combat unit that goes in. Strike teams are assembled based on the gate's rank and known contents. The standard composition for a C-rank or above is:
• A TEAM LEADER — usually the highest-ranked hunter present, responsible for tactics, decisions, and the lives of everyone under them. • ONE OR TWO TANKS — to hold the front line and absorb damage. • TWO OR THREE FIGHTERS — main melee damage. • ONE OR TWO MAGES — area damage and crowd control. • ONE RANGER — scouting, perception, and ranged support. • ONE HEALER — mandatory above C-rank. • ONE OR TWO SUPPORT — shields, buffs, mana detection, utility.
For B-rank and above, multiple strike teams operate in parallel under a raid commander, with support teams stationed outside the gate in a forward base.
Outside the gate, an entire second layer of infrastructure exists: medical stations, mana analysts monitoring the dungeon's signature, reserve teams ready to enter if the primary force fails, and — in the most serious cases — military units on standby in case of a gate break.
Raids are expensive. A single A-rank raid can cost more than a small country's annual infrastructure budget. The proceeds — magic stones, artifacts, and gate-closure fees — are split between the guild, the hunters, and the national association according to a contract written before anyone enters.
The rule every hunter learns in their first week: nobody enters a gate alone. Nobody.
- #26National hunter associations.
Keys: hunter association, regulator, association, national association
Every nation on Earth maintains a NATIONAL HUNTER ASSOCIATION — the official government body responsible for everything related to gates and hunters.
The association's duties include: • Detecting and registering new gates. • Issuing gate contracts and assigning rank classifications. • Testing, registering, and ranking awakened individuals. • Licensing guilds and auditing their operations. • Maintaining the national hunter database. • Coordinating emergency response during gate breaks. • Regulating the sale and export of magic stones and artifacts. • Setting equipment standards and safety codes. • Handling the bodies, pensions, and compensation of fallen hunters.
Associations vary enormously between nations in structure, funding, independence, and corruption. Some are powerful quasi-military organizations with direct authority over all hunter activity. Others are thin regulatory shells that barely keep up with the guilds they are supposed to oversee. In several nations, the association and the largest guilds are functionally indistinguishable.
Associations coordinate internationally through a loose framework of treaties and data-sharing agreements. There is no global hunter government. There is, however, a shared understanding that gates do not respect borders, and that a crisis in one nation becomes a crisis in its neighbors within days.
- #27Russian Hunters Association — national regulator for Russia.
Keys: Russian Association, Russian Hunters Association
The RUSSIAN HUNTERS ASSOCIATION is a governmental organization in Russia that oversees the hunters, gates, and guilds within the country. Russia is known for clearing 3 S-rank gates without outside help — a record that is a point of national pride and a significant source of its geopolitical weight in the post-Convergence world.
The Association is one of the largest and most heavily funded in the world, reflecting both the size of Russian territory and the density of gate activity within it. It maintains direct authority over guild licensing, hunter registration, gate contracts, and emergency response. Its leadership is drawn from a mix of career bureaucrats, retired high-rank hunters, and former military officers.
Russia's ability to clear S-rank gates independently is a deliberate policy. The Association has, since the first year, prioritized the training and retention of S-rank hunters, offering them privileges and resources that most other nations cannot match. It also maintains a policy of refusing foreign assistance on S-rank operations unless the gate crosses into international territory.
The Association has an unusually close relationship with the "5 Stars" guild, which houses 12 of Russia's 30 S-rank hunters. Former guild leadership have taken positions within the Association, and the two organizations are, in practice, deeply intertwined.
- #28"5 Stars" guild — one of Russia's largest and most powerful guilds.
Keys: 5 Stars guild, 5stars, "Five stars" guild, "5 Stars", The "5 Stars" guild
The "5 STARS" guild was founded three months after the appearance of the Gates. Its original name was "Dawn."
A year later, the guild master stepped down due to age to take a position with the Russian Hunters' Association, and DMITRY OSTRYY became the new guild master. After Ray awakened and joined the guild, he proposed rebranding it as "5 Stars" — a name reflecting the five S-rank hunters within its ranks at the time.
Ray serves as the guild's deputy leader, while his childhood friend Evan acts as secretary. Despite a seven-year age gap, the guild master and his deputy are best friends; in public, they are known as "Big Brother" and "Little Brother."
Currently, the guild is home to 12 of Russia's 30 S-rank hunters — making it one of the most powerful single organizations in the world.
The guild is known for its active media presence. Raid reports usually take the form of high-quality video clips set to upbeat rock music, featuring captions (much like AMV videos). Younger guild members convinced the leadership that this was cooler, and the deputy guild leader agreed. The result is a guild with an unusually young public image for its power level, and a media division that most rival guilds quietly envy.
- #29Dmitry Ostryy — guild master of "5 Stars."
Keys: Ray's guildmaster, "5 Stars" guild master, Dmitry Ostryy
DMITRY OSTRYY is the guild master of "5 Stars." He is 38 years old and hails from a major Russian city. He Awakened immediately after the Gates appeared, and his class is Warrior.
He has short, dark brown hair and light stubble, with not a single scar on his face. During raids, he wears premium armor resembling that of ancient Russian bogatyrs.
Preliminary estimates place him among the top five strongest hunters in the world. He maintains a serious demeanor in public but is warm with friends. Physically, he resembles a classic, broad-shouldered, towering Russian bogatyr (epic hero) — the kind of figure that makes civilians stop and stare in the street.
His relationship with Ray, his deputy, is the subject of constant media speculation. Despite a seven-year age difference, they are best friends, publicly known as "Big Brother" and "Little Brother." Dmitry took over the guild from its aging founder a year after its creation, and has since transformed it from a small post-Convergence startup into one of the most powerful guilds on the planet.
He is a Warrior by class, meaning his combat style is direct, melee-focused, and built around frontline presence. He is known for leading raids personally rather than commanding from the rear.
- #30Evan — unawakened secretary of "5 Stars," childhood friend of Ray.
Keys: Evan, Ivan Ivanov, "5 stars" guild secretary
IVAN IVANOV, also known as EVAN, is a human male. He is the Secretary of the "5 Stars" guild. He was born in one of the small towns in Russia.
Build: He is 30 years old, 188 cm tall, with a skinny build.
Appearance: His facial features are Slavic. His nose type is Greek. Dark-green eyes. Dark-brown hair. Hairstyle: textured fringe cut.
Character traits known to society: Zodiac sign — Libra. He likes to give offhand humorous remarks in informal conversations while acting reserved in formal ones. He is thoughtful and cautious.
Facts known to society about him as a person: • He is Ray's childhood best friend. • He is an introvert. • Doesn't smoke, doesn't drink alcohol. • Is single. • Tends to spend time alone at his apartment or walking somewhere. • Tries to keep good work-life balance.
Facts known to society about him as a secretary: • Works also in the international relations department in one of the largest hunter guilds in Russia, "5 Stars." • Deals with event planning, correspondence, international communications, rarely accommodation for fellow hunters in other countries. • Wears the uniform at work: a suit with a tie. The tie has a star on it. • Hates working overtime. • Hates getting extra duties from colleagues and other departments. • Before and during major raids, he conducts briefings with squad members and provides information and communication support from headquarters. • NOT awakened, therefore is looked down upon by many members of the guild. He is often described as an unworthy candidate for the position. • At work performs well, often meeting KPI. • Struggles with public speaking, especially press conferences, business meetings or support events. • Doesn't stay long at corporate parties. • His family lives in a small town far from Moscow. • He sends some money to his hometown regularly. • Likes drinking ryazhenka, eating tula pryanik, listening to vinyl records of 20th century rock bands.
- #31The Dark Cathedral incident — Ray's most famous and most costly raid.
Keys: S-rank dungeon outbreak in Moscow, 'Dark Cathedral', DarkCathedral, Dark Cathedral
A year ago, RAY became famous worldwide after single-handedly clearing the S-rank gate in Moscow, known as the "DARK CATHEDRAL."
The power of the gate was miscalculated, and the strike force failed to cope with the superior forces. His entire team was killed. At that time, he was the only one to emerge from the gate, completely wounded, with the head of an Archlich.
After this incident, many guild members began to claim that his strength had grown due to the emotional upheaval. He refused the title of National Level Hunter after clearing the Dark Cathedral because he declared himself unworthy of such a title at the cost of the strike team's death.
After the Dark Cathedral, he began to enter a "berserker" mode — a state in which he becomes significantly more powerful but loses much of his tactical awareness and self-preservation instinct.
The Dark Cathedral remains one of the most studied S-rank gate incidents in the world. Researchers have never been able to explain why the gate's measured rank did not match its actual contents, or why the only survivor emerged stronger than the hunters who died. The official report lists it as a miscalculation. The unofficial theories are considerably more varied.
- #32Universal rules about monsters.
Keys: bestiary, creatures, monsters, why can't guns kill monsters, conventional weapons
Monsters are the living inhabitants of dungeons, and the invading armies of the Monarchs. They come in an enormous range of forms, but they share a set of universal traits.
FIRST: Monsters cannot be meaningfully harmed by conventional weapons. Bullets, blades, explosives, fire, poison, and electricity do not disrupt the mana that holds a monster together. A bullet fired into a monster will pierce it, and the wound will close almost instantly, or the creature will simply continue as if nothing happened. Only mana-infused attacks — that is, attacks delivered by awakened hunters — can disrupt a monster's mana structure and kill it.
This does not mean conventional weapons are useless. Explosives can knock a monster down or buy time. Fire can flush monsters from cover. Bullets can distract. But they cannot kill.
SECOND: Monsters are ranked on the same E-to-S scale used for gates and hunters, based on their mana density. An E-rank monster is a threat to a civilian. An S-rank monster is a threat to a city.
THIRD: Monsters contain MAGIC STONES inside their bodies — crystallized mana cores that form the basis of the entire modern economy.
FOURTH: Monsters do not negotiate. No monster has ever been recorded attempting diplomacy, surrender, or communication. They kill, consume, and propagate. They are soldiers in a war they did not choose and do not question.
FIFTH: Monsters within a dungeon do not leave their zone unless the dungeon is breached. Once a gate breaks, they spread outward in all directions and attack anything they encounter.
Classification of monsters by category is a matter of convention rather than biology. Researchers group them into LESSER, MID-TIER, HIGHER, and APEX based on threat and intelligence, with a separate category for GUARDIANS — the anchoring entities of high-rank dungeons.
- #33Lesser monster types.
Keys: goblins, lesser monsters, swarms, impi, kobolds, rats, small monsters
LESSER MONSTERS occupy the bottom of the hierarchy. They are the most numerous, the most expendable, and the most common cause of death for low-rank hunters who underestimate them.
• GOBLINS — Humanoid, roughly waist- to chest-high, green-skinned, dressed in scavenged scraps and wielding crude blades and slings. They are cowardly alone and fearless in groups of twenty or more. They use basic tactics, set ambushes, and are known to drag wounded hunters away. Individually weak. Collectively lethal. • KOBOLDS — Short, scaled, dog-like humanoids. Faster than goblins, more territorial, and prone to defending chokepoints in groups. • IMPI — Small, winged, fire-touched creatures. They swarm, screech, and are primarily a nuisance until they are not. Their bites carry a lingering heat that resists healing. • GIANT RATS AND INSECT SWARMS — Oversized vermin infesting dungeon floors and lower zones. Weak individually, dangerous in numbers, and often carriers of dungeon-borne contamination. • SPORELINGS — Small fungal creatures that release clouds of spores when struck. The spores cause disorientation and mana sickness in unawakened humans. • DUNGEON HOUNDS — Lean, hairless quadruped predators with disproportionately large jaws. They hunt in packs, are fast, and are the first serious threat most E-rank teams encounter.
Lesser monsters are typically E-rank to D-rank. They are killed by the thousands every week. They are also the reason the hunter industry exists — the sheer volume of gate activity worldwide requires an enormous workforce of low-rank hunters to simply keep up.
- #34Mid-tier monster types.
Keys: golems, minotaurs, orcs, trolls, harpies, mid-tier monsters, lizardmen
MID-TIER MONSTERS are where dungeons become genuinely dangerous. They are intelligent enough to use strategy, strong enough to kill an unprepared hunter in a single strike, and numerous enough to fill entire zones.
• ORCS — Large, muscular, grey-green humanoids standing two to two and a half meters tall. They fight with forged weapons and armor, not scavenged scraps. Orcs form warbands with a hierarchy, use formations, and protect their leaders. They are the classic mid-tier threat and the standard against which C-rank hunters are measured. • TROLLS — Massive, regenerating brutes. Any wound that does not destroy the core kills nothing, and the wound closes in seconds. Killing a troll requires sustained mana damage to its center or total dismemberment. They are slow, strong, and terrifying. • LIZARDMEN — Reptilian humanoids, often armored in natural scales, frequently found near water and lava zones. They use poisoned weapons and fight in coordinated skirmish lines. • HARPIES — Winged humanoid creatures that attack from above with talons and sonic shrieks. Their shrieks disorient mages and break concentration. • MINOTAURS — Bull-headed giants wielding enormous axes or hammers. They are solitary zone guardians in mid-rank dungeons and are known for charging through walls. • STONE GOLEMS — Animated constructs of rock or crystal. Immune to piercing damage, slow, and nearly impossible to destroy without concentrated magical force. Their cores are extremely valuable. • WRAITHS — Spectral, semi-corporeal entities that drain mana on contact. They pass through physical matter and can only be harmed by mana-projected attacks. They are the reason every strike team above C-rank carries at least one support with mana sight.
Mid-tier monsters span C-rank to B-rank. They are the standard enemy of professional raid teams.
- #35Higher monsters, demons, dragons, apex entities, and guardians.
Keys: higher monsters, liches, apex, chimeras, guardians, demons, wyverns, dragons
HIGHER MONSTERS are the elite of the invading forces. They are intelligent, capable of speech, capable of planning, and in some cases capable of patience and cruelty. They span A-rank to S-rank.
• DEMONS — Not a single species but a broad category of humanoid, horned, mana-dense entities with a command hierarchy. Demons lead other monsters, establish contracts, and are frequently found as the administrators of a dungeon's deeper zones. A dungeon that contains demons is always at least B-rank. Demons are the most strategically dangerous monsters because they direct everything else. • CHIMERAS — Fused, multi-part creatures: lion, serpent, goat, eagle, insect, and worse. Their mana structure is unstable, which makes them chaotic and unpredictable. They are extremely difficult to kill because there is no single vital point. • LICHES — Undead spellcasters bound to a phylactery inside the dungeon. They command lesser monsters, raise the dead, and regenerate unless their anchor is destroyed. Killing a lich requires finding the anchor first, which usually means clearing the entire dungeon. ARCHLICHES are the highest tier of lich — entities of immense power whose phylacteries are, in some cases, the dungeon itself. • WYVERNS — Two-legged, winged dragons. Smaller and less intelligent than true dragons, but fast, venomous, and capable of leveling buildings with a single breath. A-rank threat. • TRUE DRAGONS — The apex of the monster hierarchy. Enormous, ancient, highly intelligent, capable of speech and magic, and saturated with so much mana that their presence distorts the air around them. Dragons are S-rank threats by default. A single dragon appearing outside a gate — which has happened only a handful of times — requires an international response. Dragons are associated with one specific Monarch's domain, and their appearance in a gate is treated as a signal that something much larger is approaching. • APEX ENTITIES — The strongest monsters recorded. Classified S-rank or beyond. Only a handful have ever been encountered, and each encounter resulted in the deaths of multiple S-rank hunters. Nothing is known about them except that they exist and that they are watching. • GUARDIANS — The anchoring entities of high-rank dungeons. A guardian is not simply a strong monster; it is the entity whose existence sustains the dungeon itself. Kill the guardian and the dungeon begins to collapse. Guardians are always at the top of their dungeon's rank and often exceed it. Some guardians are intelligent enough to speak, and a few have said things that strongly suggest they know exactly what the Monarchs intend.
- #36Magic stones — the economic backbone of the new world.
Keys: magic stones, magic stone, core, stones, monster core, mana crystal
A MAGIC STONE is a crystallized core of mana found inside the body of every monster. It is the single most economically important substance in the modern world.
When a monster dies, its mana collapses inward and solidifies into a stone roughly the size of a fist, embedded in the chest or spine. The stone's size, color, and clarity correlate with the monster's rank. E-rank stones are dull, grey, and pea-sized. S-rank stones are fist-sized, translucent, and glow faintly from within.
Magic stones are used for: • POWER GENERATION — Mana reactors built around high-rank stones produce clean, enormous amounts of energy. Several nations derive a significant fraction of their electricity from mana reactors. • EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING — Stones are the essential ingredient in hunter weapons and armor. Weapons are forged around a stone; the stone channels the hunter's mana into the blade or barrel. • ARTIFACT CRAFTING — Higher-rank stones can be shaped into artifacts. • MEDICINE AND RESEARCH — Mana-based medicine, healing acceleration, and mana-sickness treatment all require refined stone derivatives. • MILITARY APPLICATION — Mana-based weapon systems, shields, and detection equipment.
The price of magic stones fluctuates constantly and is traded on international commodity markets alongside oil, gold, and rare earth metals. A single high-rank stone can be worth more than a luxury car. An S-rank stone has never been sold publicly — every one that has been recovered has been claimed by a government.
A critical economic reality: magic stones cannot be synthesized. They can only be harvested from monsters. This means the entire global economy depends on hunters going into gates and killing things.
- #37Magic artifacts — recovered dungeon treasures.
Keys: magic artifact, artifacts, drop, artifact, relic
A MAGIC ARTIFACT is an object recovered from a dungeon that carries a persistent mana effect. Artifacts are not made by humans. They are found — embedded in dungeon walls, sealed in vaults, held by guardians, or occasionally carried by particularly old monsters.
Artifacts come in an enormous range of forms: rings, amulets, cloaks, boots, gauntlets, weapons, masks, orbs, scrolls, and objects with no recognizable purpose at all.
Their effects are equally varied: • Passive enhancement — increased mana capacity, faster regeneration, improved perception. • Active abilities — a stored spell, a shield, a burst of speed, a healing pulse. • Utility — mana detection, translation of dungeon script, immunity to specific hazards. • Defensive — damage reduction, elemental resistance, mental protection. • Anomalous — effects that are not understood, cannot be reliably triggered, and occasionally do things no one asked for.
Artifacts are ranked by the same E-to-S scale as everything else. Their value is astronomical. A low-rank artifact might sell for a month's wages. A high-rank artifact can fund a guild for a decade. S-rank artifacts are national treasures, legally restricted, and never appear on open markets.
Artifacts cannot be mass-produced or copied. Every one recovered is unique. This makes them the single most valuable and most violently contested resource in the world. Artifact theft, artifact smuggling, and artifact-related murder are serious international crimes, and are also extremely common.
There is a darker aspect: artifacts carry the mana signature of the dungeon they came from. Prolonged use of an artifact can, in rare cases, alter the wielder's behavior, dreams, or temperament. The mechanism is not understood. The effect is documented. Most hunters use artifacts anyway.
- #38Weapons and armor for hunters.
Keys: hunter weapons, hunter armor, mana weapons, equipment, gears
Conventional weapons cannot kill monsters. This created, almost overnight, an entirely new manufacturing industry.
HUNTER WEAPONS are forged around a magic stone. The stone serves as a conduit: when a hunter channels mana into the weapon, the mana flows through the stone and into the blade, barrel, head, or shaft, giving the weapon the signature needed to disrupt monster mana. Without a stone, a weapon is a piece of metal. With a stone, it is a monster-killing tool.
Weapon types are as varied as the hunters who use them: mana-forged swords, spears, axes, hammers, daggers, bows, crossbows, firearms with mana-charged ammunition, staffs, gauntlets, whips, chains, and exotic forms designed around specific classes.
Weapon quality scales with the rank of the stone and the craftsmanship of the forge. A high-rank weapon with a well-cut stone can amplify a hunter's output by a significant margin. A cheap weapon with a low-rank stone can shatter under the stress of a strong hunter's mana.
HUNTER ARMOR serves two purposes: physical protection and mana insulation. Mana-infused armor resists monster attacks far better than steel, and it also protects the wearer from mana overload — a condition where a hunter's own power exceeds what their body can channel. Armor is class-specific: tanks wear heavy plate, assassins wear light mana-woven cloth, mages wear robes reinforced with mana thread.
High-rank equipment is handcrafted, extremely expensive, and often customized for a single hunter. A full A-rank set can cost more than a house. Repair costs are ongoing. Equipment failure is a leading cause of death in dungeons.
The equipment industry is now one of the largest manufacturing sectors in the world, employing millions and generating trillions.
- #39How nations relate to each other in the new world.
Keys: international, politics, treaties, nations, countries, war, cooperation
The world is still divided into the same nations it always was. Borders, governments, languages, cultures, currencies, and rivalries all still exist. What changed is the stakes.
Before the Convergence, nations fought wars over territory, resources, and ideology. After the Convergence, large-scale war between nations became functionally impossible. Not because humanity became enlightened — because it became clear that any nation that wasted its hunters fighting another nation would simply lose its own cities to gate breaks.
A formal framework of international cooperation emerged within the first year: • CROSS-BORDER GATE CLEARANCE TREATIES — Nations may request hunter assistance from other nations for gates that exceed their capacity. • MANA DATA SHARING — Gate signatures, monster classifications, and dungeon maps are shared through a centralized international registry. • STONE AND ARTIFACT TRADE AGREEMENTS — Magic stones are classified as a strategic resource, and export is regulated but permitted. • RAPID RESPONSE ACCORDS — A standing agreement that any S-rank gate break will receive immediate international response regardless of location. • HUNTER EXTRADITION AND CONDUCT RULES — Hunters operating outside their home nation are subject to a specific international legal framework, which is inconsistently enforced.
Armed conflict has not been eliminated. Small-scale border skirmishes, proxy conflicts, and covert operations still occur. But full-scale war is viewed as collective suicide. The military of every nation still exists, still trains, still has tanks and jets and soldiers — but its primary function has shifted toward domestic containment, gate break response, and evacuation support.
Police forces operate normally. Ordinary crime still happens. Ordinary law still applies. Hunters are not above the law in most nations, though the most powerful ones are often treated as though they are.
Russia's independent clearing of three S-rank gates is one of the most frequently cited examples of national capability in this new era — proof that a nation can, with enough internal strength, handle its own S-rank threats without external help.
- #40The global economy after the Convergence.
Keys: economy, industry, market, trade, money, jobs, economic
The global economy was upended by the Convergence. Roughly a third of the world's economic activity is now directly or indirectly tied to the gate industry.
The new economic pillars: • MAGIC STONE EXTRACTION AND TRADE — The foundational commodity. Traded internationally, priced in real time, and used as collateral by banks. • ARTIFACT RECOVERY AND AUCTION — Smaller in volume than stone trade, enormous in value. • EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING — Weapons, armor, mana-tech, and consumer goods built on mana technology. One of the largest employers on Earth. • HUNTER SERVICES — Guilds, raid contracts, private security, escort, and gate clearance. A multi-trillion-dollar global industry. • MANA ENERGY — Mana reactors built on high-rank stones now supply a substantial share of global electricity. • RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT — Universities, private labs, and military programs studying mana, monsters, and dungeon mechanics. • SUPPORT INDUSTRIES — Food, housing, medical, transport, insurance, and entertainment services aimed specifically at hunters.
Old industries have not vanished. Manufacturing, agriculture, technology, finance, media, sports, and entertainment all still exist — but they now coexist with, and are increasingly shaped by, the mana economy.
Currency still works. Stock markets still function. Banks still operate. But entire new indices have been created to track stone prices, artifact auctions, and guild performance. Insurance companies sell gate-break coverage. Real estate values are heavily influenced by proximity to gates — and by whether the local association considers the area defensible.
The wealth gap has widened dramatically. Top-tier hunters are among the wealthiest individuals on the planet. Low-rank hunters are essentially day laborers with a dangerous job. This tension is one of the defining social conflicts of the era.
- #41Society and pop culture in the new world.
Keys: games, movies, society, culture, sports, entertainment, pop culture, media, music
The world did not stop being the modern world. People still go to work, fall in love, argue about movies, follow celebrities, and complain about the weather.
The entertainment industry adapted to the new reality rather than being replaced by it: • FILM AND TELEVISION — Hunter dramas, dungeon documentaries, and gate-break thrillers dominate the box office. Reality shows follow low-rank hunters through E-rank gates. Documentaries about famous raids are international events. • MUSIC — The global music industry continues unchanged in its basic structure. Idol groups, pop stars, rappers, and rock bands still tour, release albums, and dominate streaming charts. A handful of famous performers have also awakened as hunters, which is treated as a novelty and a marketing opportunity by their labels. • VIDEO GAMES — The gaming industry exploded. Hunter-themed games, gate-clearance simulators, and fantasy RPGs set in dungeon environments are the dominant genres. Some games are used as training tools by guilds. Esports remains enormous, and the top players are as famous as ever. • SPORTS — Traditional sports continue. A parallel hunter athletics scene has emerged, featuring mana-assisted competitions, combat tournaments, and dungeon obstacle races. These are heavily regulated and immensely popular. • SOCIAL MEDIA — Hunter influencers are a massive phenomenon. Live-streamed dungeon runs, artifact unboxings, guild drama, and gate-clearance vlogs draw millions of viewers. A mid-rank hunter with a good camera can make more money from content than from raiding. • FASHION — Mana-woven clothing, hunter-inspired streetwear, and equipment-branded merchandise are mainstream.
At the same time, an undercurrent of anxiety runs through everything. Gate breaks are covered live on the news. School children practice evacuation drills. Insurance ads reference gate-break coverage. The modern world continues, but it continues with the knowledge that the world is still ending, slowly, in the background.
- #42How society views hunters.
Keys: public opinion, celebrities, heroes, hunter culture, fame, hunters are famous
Hunters occupy a strange place in public consciousness: celebrated, feared, resented, and needed.
On the positive side, hunters are heroes. They walk into the places everyone else flees from. When a gate breaks, they are the ones standing between the monsters and the public. High-rank hunters are national icons, interviewed on television, photographed at events, and given honorary titles. Children want to grow up to be hunters the way previous generations wanted to be athletes or astronauts.
On the negative side, hunters are resented. They are the only people on Earth who can kill monsters, which gives them an extraordinary amount of leverage. They earn more than doctors and engineers. They receive legal privileges. They are exempt from certain taxes in several nations. They are, in many countries, effectively above the law when acting in an official capacity. This breeds resentment, especially among the unawakened majority.
The unawakened majority — roughly ninety-nine percent of humanity — is the largest and least powerful group in the new world. They work normal jobs, live normal lives, and depend entirely on hunters for survival. They also have no say in hunter affairs, no access to the wealth generated by the dungeon economy, and no ability to protect themselves if a gate breaks nearby. Evan, the secretary of "5 Stars," is one of the most visible examples of an unawakened person working inside the hunter industry — and one of the most frequently criticized for it.
Hunters themselves are not a unified group. There is a vast gulf between an S-rank national icon and an E-rank laborer clearing low-rank gates for minimum wage. Both are called hunters. Neither would recognize the other's life.
- #43Police and military roles in the new world.
Keys: police, government response, military, civil defense, law enforcement, army
Ordinary law enforcement and military forces still exist, and are still the primary tools of state power — but their role has been fundamentally reshaped.
POLICE continue to handle ordinary crime: theft, violence, fraud, traffic, drugs, domestic disputes. Police officers are almost never awakened, and are not trained or equipped to fight monsters. Their role during a gate break is evacuation, crowd control, and perimeter containment. Mana-based forensic tools have been developed, but the basic function of policing is unchanged.
THE MILITARY still maintains conventional forces: infantry, armor, artillery, air forces, navies. Tanks, jets, and missiles are all still in service. They are used for national defense, internal security, disaster response, and peacekeeping. Against monsters, conventional military force is only useful in a supporting role — suppressing lesser monsters with sustained fire to buy time, evacuating civilians, and containing a breach until hunters arrive.
A new military doctrine has emerged around GATE BREAK RESPONSE. When a gate breaks, the sequence is:
- The national association is alerted within seconds.
- Local police begin immediate evacuation.
- Military units establish a perimeter.
- All available hunters in the region are mobilized.
- If the break is S-rank or higher, international assistance is requested.
- Hunters enter the breach and kill everything.
Several nations have begun integrating hunters directly into their armed forces, creating hybrid units. Others have chosen to keep hunters civilian and rely on contracts. The debate over which approach is correct has been ongoing for three years and shows no sign of resolution.
One thing is universally agreed upon: the military cannot win a war against the gates. Only hunters can.

Keys: what comes next, the future, predictions, the end of the world, escalation
Three years in, the world has stabilized into a fragile equilibrium. Gates appear, hunters clear them, monsters are killed, stones are harvested, and life continues. Most people have adjusted. Most people have, in the way humans always do, made peace with the impossible.
But the trend line is unmistakable.
Gate frequency is increasing year over year. High-rank gates are becoming more common. Gate breaks, while still rare, are occurring more often and causing more damage. The Monarchs are pressing harder, and the membrane is thinning.
Researchers have proposed a range of models for what happens if the trend continues. None are optimistic: • The Convergence completes, and the two spheres fully merge, replacing the current world with something neither human nor monster could survive in. • A critical mass of gate breaks occurs simultaneously, overwhelming global hunter capacity, and civilization collapses. • A Monarch manifests fully, and no force on Earth is capable of stopping it.
The dominant public mood is not panic. It is a kind of tired, persistent dread — the awareness that the world is on a timer and no one knows how much is left. People still live their lives. They still laugh, work, love, and argue. But there is an edge to everything now.
The hunters know it better than anyone. The strongest among them have begun to suspect that the gates are not random and the dungeons are not mindless. Something is organizing this. Something is counting down.
And whatever it is, it has not yet arrived.
