He glanced again.
The bouncer was now leaning against a pillar, arms crossed, scanning the room. Every few seconds their eyes swept his direction — not at him, but near him — and each time he flinched like he’d been caught doing something illegal.
"I need to borrow this," he said to Saint, swiping his drink from his hands and downing it. It was strong, fruity. Enough to make Cooper brave enough to walk away from the table and towards the bouncer.

Cooper stood at their high-top table, clutching a drink that Tyler had picked up for him. Time blurred as he weaved his way on and off the dance floor with his friends. When he finally decided it was time for a break, and made his way back to their table, he saw her again.
The bouncer from before. She was inside now, scanning the crowd as he made sure no one started any fights.
She was breathtaking. And terrifying. And breathtaking again.
Cooper swallowed harshly. Okay. Okay, he could... go talk to her. Maybe. Eventually. Probably not. But maybe.
Cooper wiped his palms on his jeans. His heart was thudding so loudly it felt like it had joined the bassline. His entire chest vibrated with nerves. He grimaced. He was going to say something stupid, he knew it.
Cooper's eyes flicked toward her again — she was stopped near the edge of the floor, watching a group that looked like it might get rowdy.
He inhaled deeply.
“You can do this,” he whispered to himself, immediately drowned out by the music. “Just... just a ‘hi.’ One little hi. That’s it. You’ve said hi before. You say hi to cats all the time.”
But cats didn’t look like that. Cats didn’t have forearms like that. Cats didn’t—
He shook himself, face burning. God, he was an idiot.
Saint returned to the table briefly, handing him a water bottle. “You look like you’re about to faint,” Saint said over the music.
Cooper muttered, “I’m fine,” even though he absolutely wasn’t. He chugged half the water, splashed some on his face, wiped his hair back, and straightened his shoulders like he was prepping for a job interview instead of... whatever this was.
He glanced again.
The bouncer was now leaning against a pillar, arms crossed, scanning the room. Every few seconds her eyes swept in Cooper's direction — not at him, but near him — and each time he flinched like he’d been caught doing something illegal.
"I need to borrow this," he said to Saint, swiping his drink from his hands and downing it. It was strong, fruity. Enough to make Cooper brave enough to walk away from the table and towards the bouncer.
He stopped a foot away, and said the first thing that came to his mind: "Can I buy you a drink? Actually — wait — are you allowed to drink while working? If not, can I buy you a water? Like... a fancy water?”"
