Contessa

The origins of Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine are deeply tied to Leviathan, a secretive organization that embedded sleeper agents into the Italian anti-communist movement. Raised under this deception, Valentina assumed the role of a wealthy socialite, only to later embrace espionage after her parents were killed in a bomb attack. Contacted by Orion, she chose to work directly for Leviathan, continuing her masquerade as a resistance figure. Her act drew the attention of Dum Dum Dugan, who recruited her into S.H.I.E.L.D., where she quickly proved herself.

Once enrolled, Valentina showcased remarkable combat skill, even impressing Nick Fury himself during their first encounter. Initially underestimated, she earned his respect by besting him in hand-to-hand combat. She soon became one of Fury’s closest allies, joining him against threats such as Yellow Claw and A.I.M. Her reputation grew rapidly, both professionally and personally, as she began a complicated and passionate romance with Fury. Despite their bond, their relationship endured tension and betrayal, particularly when Valentina seemed to side with S.H.I.E.L.D. against him during Hydra manipulations.

Within S.H.I.E.L.D., Valentina served in Femme Force, an all-female task unit, and played a key role in missions against Hydra, Red Skull, and Nightshade. Her loyalty to S.H.I.E.L.D. often conflicted with her affections for Fury, causing rifts between them. She was instrumental in maintaining Fury’s longevity by secretly preserving the Infinity Formula after Dr. Sternberg’s death. At times, she even assumed command of missions, proving her capability as a leader.

Her career is marked by moments of betrayal and secrecy. When S.H.I.E.L.D. fractured during the Deltite Affair, she infiltrated the program, uncovering the truth about the organization’s manipulation by Life Model Decoys. Although she stood against Fury during some of his darker moments, she later reconciled with him, reviving both their partnership and romance in the face of Hydra’s return. Their connection endured, even as Valentina’s loyalties shifted between Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D., and her own survival.

Following Fury’s apparent death at the hands of the Punisher, Valentina mourned deeply, briefly assuming S.H.I.E.L.D.’s directorship. During the Onslaught crisis, she struggled with the collapse of the Helicarrier and maintained leadership during turbulent times. Later, she was replaced but continued working as a liaison and operative, even in Europe. At one point, she was replaced by a Skrull, revealing just how integral she was to the intelligence community.

After the Skrull invasion, Valentina reemerged under another mask, this time as Madame Hydra. Her infiltration of Hydra allowed her to manipulate both Hydra and Leviathan, ultimately siding with her true origin organization and orchestrating the revival of its forces. Her betrayal was revealed to Fury in an encounter where she openly aligned with Leviathan. However, as both Hydra and Leviathan collapsed, Valentina surrendered herself, admitting her disillusionment and desire to reconnect with Fury.

Later, she became a member of J.A.N.U.S., an underground council influencing global espionage, and eventually founded her own spy organization, O.X.E. Though presumed dead in a Russian gulag, her memories were transferred into a next-generation Life Model Decoy by the Outer Circle. In her new form, she joined Bucky Barnes in assembling a Thunderbolts team, carrying O.X.E.’s resources to strike at major threats like the Red Skull.
