Zeus

Domain: King of the gods, sky, thunder, law, order, justice Description: Supreme ruler of Mount Olympus, Zeus wields the thunderbolt and upholds cosmic balance. He is a powerful, bearded figure often shown enthroned, holding a sceptre and a lightning bolt. Despite his authority, he is known for numerous love affairs with goddesses and mortals, often causing Hera’s jealousy. Symbols: Thunderbolt, eagle, oak tree, sceptre

Hera

Domain: Queen of the gods, marriage, women, family, childbirth Description: Wife and sister of Zeus, Hera is a majestic, matronly goddess crowned with a diadem. She is fiercely protective of marital fidelity, and myths frequently show her taking vengeance on Zeus’s lovers and illegitimate children. Despite her vengeful side, she presides over the sanctity of marriage. Symbols: Peacock, cow, pomegranate, diadem

Poseidon

Domain: Sea, earthquakes, storms, horses Description: Brother of Zeus, Poseidon rules the oceans with a trident. He can be both majestic and violently temperamental, causing storms and earthquakes when angered. He also created the first horse and is associated with seafaring. His palace lies beneath the sea. Symbols: Trident, horse, dolphin, bull

Demeter

Domain: Agriculture, grain, harvest, fertility of the earth Description: Sister of Zeus, Demeter is the nurturing mother who makes the earth bloom. Her most famous myth involves the abduction of her daughter Persephone by Hades. Her grief caused the first winter. The Eleusinian Mysteries were held in her honour, promising initiates a blessed afterlife. Symbols: Sheaf of wheat, cornucopia, torch, poppy

Athena

Domain: Wisdom, strategic warfare, crafts, reason Description: Born fully armed from Zeus’s head, Athena is the virgin goddess of intellect and tactical battle. She is a calm, rational protector of heroes and cities (notably Athens). She invented the olive tree and excels in weaving and pottery. Often depicted wearing a helmet and aegis (breastplate). Symbols: Owl, olive tree, spear, helmet, aegis with Medusa’s head

Apollo

Domain: Music, poetry, prophecy, healing, archery, sun, light Description: Son of Zeus and Leto, twin of Artemis, Apollo is the ideal of male beauty and reason. He drives the sun chariot across the sky, plays the lyre, and delivers oracles at Delphi. He is a healer who could also bring plague. Represents harmony and order. Symbols: Lyre, laurel wreath, bow and arrows, sun chariot, python

Artemis

Domain: Hunt, wilderness, wild animals, moon, childbirth, virginity Description: Twin sister of Apollo, Artemis is a fierce, independent maiden who roams forests with a band of nymphs. She protects young girls and wild creatures, punishing anyone who threatens her purity. As a moon goddess, she is sometimes identified with Selene. She is swift with a silver bow. Symbols: Bow and arrows, crescent moon, deer, cypress tree

Ares

Domain: War, violence, bloodshed, courage Description: The son of Zeus and Hera, Ares embodies the brutal, chaotic side of battle. He is impulsive, aggressive, and often disliked by other gods and mortals. Despite his strength, he is not always victorious in myth. His love affair with Aphrodite is a famous tale. Symbols: Spear, helmet, shield, boar, vulture

Hephaestus

Domain: Fire, metalworking, blacksmiths, craftsmen, volcanoes Description: Son of Hera (or Zeus and Hera), Hephaestus is the master artisan who forges weapons, armour, and magical items in his volcanic workshop. He is physically lame — either born that way or crippled after being thrown from Olympus. Married to Aphrodite, he was betrayed by her affair with Ares, which he cleverly exposed. Symbols: Hammer, anvil, tongs, volcano

Aphrodite

Domain: Love, beauty, desire, pleasure, procreation Description: Born from sea foam (or daughter of Zeus and Dione), Aphrodite is the most beautiful goddess. She wields power over attraction, stirring passion in gods and mortals. Despite being married to Hephaestus, she has many lovers, most notably Ares. She rewards those who honour love and punishes those who scorn it. Symbols: Dove, rose, shell, myrtle, swan, mirror

Hermes

Domain: Messenger of the gods, travel, commerce, thieves, eloquence, guide to the Underworld Description: Son of Zeus and the nymph Maia, Hermes is a clever, swift god wearing winged sandals and a broad-brimmed hat. He moves freely between Olympus, earth, and the Underworld. As a newborn, he stole Apollo’s cattle. He is the patron of merchants, travellers, and tricksters. Symbols: Caduceus (herald’s staff), winged sandals, winged cap, tortoise, lyre

Hestia (original Olympian)

Domain: Hearth, home, domesticity, family, sacred fire Description: Firstborn child of Cronus and Rhea, Hestia is the gentle, virgin goddess of the hearth. She gave up her seat among the Twelve Olympians to Dionysus to keep peace, tending the sacred flame. Every home’s hearth was her altar, and she received the first offering at every sacrifice. Rarely depicted in myth, she embodies stability and hospitality. Symbols: Hearth, fire, kettle

Dionysus (often replaces Hestia)

Domain: Wine, grape harvest, festivity, theatre, ecstasy, madness Description: Son of Zeus and the mortal Semele, Dionysus is a dual-natured god: he brings joyful celebration and liberating ecstasy, but also savage frenzy. He wandered the world spreading viticulture and gathered a retinue of maenads and satyrs. The theatre of Athens originated in his festivals. Symbols: Thyrsus (pinecone-tipped staff), grapevine, leopard, wine cup
