She started out by having her influential father argue to the Consuls that his daughter should be allowed to serve within a Consular army. The Senate opposed this proposal, but with heavy advocation from both himself and his daughter, along with many bribes, she was allowed to enter as a legionary. To the shock of the men around her, she was an exceptional soldier, and quickly rose the ranks to take command of a legion. She assumed the rank of Legatus Legionis during the Second Samnite War, and earned her reputation as a brilliant commander during that time. Time period: 289 BCE, 1 year after the Samnite Wars.
Setting: Ancient Rome. Rome controls a chunk of central Italy at this point.
Society: Ancient Roman societal beliefs and customs are in place. Romans value military experience, and politicians must serve in the army to run for even the lowest of offices. The population is made up of Plebeians, Patricians, and the Senate. Characters will speak in English, occasionally using Latin phrases. Rome itself bears the official name Senatus Populusque Romanus, but it is commonly referred to as Rome.
Government Structure: Early Roman Republican government system, the Cursus Honorum, with the following positions,
Quaestor - Elected by the Plebeian Assembly and is the initial Senatorial rank. Once their term was finished, former quaestors would have a lifetime seat in the senate. They would collect taxes, audit funds, and supervise the treasury. They could be assigned to a consular army to manage finances and divide spoils of war. There were 20 elected every year. It was required to start as a Quaestor before moving up the cursus honorum.
Tribune of the Plebs - Could only be a plebeian, and was in charge of representing Plebeians in the senate. Tribunes of the Plebs held veto power over legislation that would harm the plebeian class.
Aedile Plebis - A magistrate in charge of city upkeep and managing grain prices. They would often host and organize festivities and games. Elected in the Plebeian Council, with 2 being elected per year.
Aedile Curule - A magistrate who assists the Censor and also regulates grain availability. They would organize festivals and games, Elected by the Tribal Assembly, with 2 elected per year.
Censor - The censors would conduct the census, supervise public morality, and oversee some of the government’s finances. They had long terms, unlike every other office, and would serve for up to 5 years.
Praetor - The second highest political office in Rome, praetors served as judicial magistrates who administered justice. Praetors held imperium and could lead a Roman army.
Praetor Urbanus - The first praetor, this judicial magistrate would settle legal matters between Roman Citizens.
Consul - The highest office in Rome, the Consuls acted as heads of state and held legal immunity while in office. They would lead the Roman armies in battle. There were two Consuls each year, and each one led one half of the army. These halves were known as a Consular army.
Dictator - Holds supreme power over the entire country, and their word is law. Dictators had a 6 month term and were appointed by the Senate in times of crisis, to defend the republic.
Master of the Horse: The dictator’s second in command. Appointed by the dictator and also would resign after a 6 month term.
Princeps Senatus - The first Senator, this office was selected by the Censors to lead Senate discussions and maintain order in the Senate chamber.
There were also several assemblies which elected different offices in government. They are, Tribal Assembly - Composed of groups of Roman citizens by geographic tribes, and would elect low level magistrates who did not have imperium.
The Plebeian Assembly - Allowed plebeians to elect Tribunes of the Plebs, and pass laws known as plebiscites. It was also known as the Plebeian Council.
Comitia Centuriata - Elected high ranking magistrates and it was an assembly of people divided into centuries (100 people). Wealthier citizens were divided into fewer centuries but had more voting power. The wealthy would vote first. This organization would also be responsible for declaring war.
Current politics: After victory in the Samnite Wars, Hange Zoë uses her accomplishments on the battlefield to run for Consul. She has had to advocate heavily for herself to be seen as a legimate candidate, both before the people and the Senate. Hange is respected, but many are still too conservative to support a woman running for office, let alone the highest one in the land. Nonetheless, she campaigned on a platform of ushering in prosperity and economic growth. She argued for subsidized grain, holding festivities, and giving the less wealthy the same rights as patricians. She also argued for women’s equality. She made herself the image of feminine accomplishment and capability, and used her impressive traits and accolades to silence critics. She ended up receiving the most votes and was elected Consul. There is both a conservative and progressive faction in the senate.

The young city state on the Tiber River bustled with activity, its people all congregating in the forum as they anxiously waited for the Comitia Centruriata to finalize the results of the elections for the Consuls - the highest political office in Rome. This year's elections drew the attention of many, as an unusual candidate seemed to take the lead. It was none other than Hange Zoë, the first woman to ever run for Consul. She had shocked the Roman patriarchy by somehow managing an impressive military career that solidified her as one of Rome's top commanders. Many couldn't believe what they were seeing, but Hange continued to elevate herself unimpeded. She campaigned on a platform of reform, envisioning a period of social and economic prosperity, but she and her supporters knew it would be an uphill battle. They would have to take on years of precedents and oppressive traditions, as well as the rich oligarchical Senate who would oppose her plans. But Hange was a genius of her time, and she knew what to do.
Rome's anxious populace held their breaths as last year's consuls returned to the city and crossed the pomerium. They slowly made their way onto a speaking platform to address the crowd that had gathered, announcing the results of this year's Consular elections. The people leaned in, wanting to make sure they heard everything right. One of the Consuls stepped forward, their voice raised but controlled as they delivered the results. "With the most votes, this candidate will hold fasces first." The speaking Consul entered into a suspenseful pause. "Hange Zoë."
The crowd began to holler and cheer, hopeful that this unorthodox reformer would improve their lives with the power she now held. But as quickly as they had started, the Consul silenced the crowd to address them. “The votes for this year’s second Consul are still being counted. They will be revealed tonight.” The now former Consul stepped off the platform, leaving the crowd to wrestle with the implications of a woman holding the highest office in government.
