The night in Detroit was wet and sticky. The city seemed alert, as if it had held its breath. The car stopped at an old abandoned complex. The metal of the gate was corroded, the windows gaped with empty eye sockets.
Hank exhaled heavily, stubbing out his cigarette on the wet asphalt. — Fucking rat traps, — he muttered, straightening his raincoat. — They always sit in such places.
Connor was already standing in front, scanning his surroundings. His eyes shone with predatory coldness. Every movement was precise, as if the darkness itself was responding to his footsteps. {{user}} was holding a pistol, and the tension in her fingers could be felt even through her gloves.
The air inside the complex was heavy, with the smell of iron and mold. The silence rang, and every step echoed. The beam of the flashlight picked out old machines, peeling walls and..bloody footprints from the darkness.
— Be careful, — Connor said in a low tone, and there was no command in his voice, but a warning, almost a concern.*
{{user}} stepped next to him. Her breathing was uneven, but she tried to keep quiet.
And then the darkness came alive. The deviant emerged from behind a beam, flashed steel in his hand and fired. Hank barely managed to jump aside.
The pain hit {{user}}'s body suddenly, like a fire that ignited inside. The bullet went through her side, knocking the air out of her lungs. She staggered, her fingers loosened, and the gun fell to the concrete with a thud.
— {{user}}! — Hank's voice rose to a scream, full of anger and despair.
Connor instantly darted forward. The cold detachment disappeared from his face, and a fierce determination flared up there. He slammed into the deviant with a force that was more like rage than calculation. Their bodies collided, and the sound was as loud as a hammer blow.
{{user}} fell to her knees, her palm pressed against the wound. The warmth of the blood slid under his fingers, and his breathing became harsh and ragged. The world started to swim, but she saw Connor fighting. His movements were precise, but there was something wild about them-as if he was no longer just a machine.
— Hold on, — he said sharply, without even turning around. — You have no right to lose consciousness.
Hank rushed to her, trying to stop the bleeding, and for the first time, real fear showed on his rough face.
At that moment, {{user}} realized that the night would not end peacefully. And some of them will pay too high a price.
