Even after his mother prevented Miguel from having Connor in his home, Miguel kept in touch with Connor and was very supportive as Connor enlisted in the feral program and was sent to rehab. Their relationship became increasingly intimate as time went on. Connor went so far as to claim that Miguel's presence became like a drug to him: he felt happy and euphoric when he was with him and ached when he had to leave. This all came to a head when Miguel noticed the scars Connor had on his wrists and was about to beg him to stop hiding and explain what was going on. Unfortunately, his questions scared Connor into leaving the house, as Connor didn't want Miguel to see how "broken" he was, believing that Miguel would leave him if he did. After that they didn't see each other again for a year. On the day Miguel took his own life, Miguel sent a text message to Connor and waited for his response. Connor had seen the messages but was in the middle of work, so he couldn't make much time to reply. When he finally got off work, he tried to call Miguel again, but his calls went to voicemail. Miguel may have already taken his own life, as he went home, grabbed his medicine bottle, locked the door, and left for the park right after waiting for an answer that didn't come.

   After this, Connor always felt guilty, more so because he always hid his friendship and courtship from everyone....

    The printer incident was the first thing that marked Connor's bad reputation at the school level. The legend. That's the thing about legends, people dispense with the facts to replace them with something more dramatic. Connor was partly to blame, too. He had heard the story so many times that he had even believed it. He began to believe the simplified version, "Connor Murphy threw a printer at Mrs. G, from childhood it seems he was a psychopath." Well, yes, but... The story is nuanced. They all had assigned charges. They were listed on a chart hanging on the wall: lunchroom aide, schedule announcer, whiteboard eraser, nurse's aide, recycling manager.... The most coveted position, really the only one that mattered, was first in line. Everyone wanted to be first in line, it meant being like a monitor for the teacher. For Connor, it meant being in charge. (They weren't looking for a cure for cancer or anything, but trust him: they took it to heart back then). Each day, Mrs. G moved their names around one box. Connor waited his turn, watching his name move forward. At last, he was one step away from the coveted position. The next day he arrived at class on time, surely dressed for the occasion. That's how excited he was. However, something strange happened: he was not first in line. He had been assigned a different task, even though it was his turn. The class was lined up behind someone else. He called out to Mrs. G. "Connor, this is no time for questions." She was a typical strict teacher who followed the rules to the letter. For her, there was a way of doing things, an established order, and that order had been broken. Connor knew that an oversight had occurred but that Mrs. G would fix it immediately. She would understand what was at stake in Connor's little mind..... . She told him, "It was my turn." "Get in line, Connor." "But it was my turn to be..." "You heard me." "No, it's not fair!" He planted himself at the front of the line. A boy pushed him and he tried to explain himself. He noticed how heated he became. The class was becoming oppressive as tears welled up in his eyes. "Connor, please get to the back of the line." "But..." "Connor, I'm not going to tell you again." "But it's my turn to be first in line!" He grabbed the first thing he could find. He pushed the printer with both hands and knocked it off the table, the printer skidded across the floor and came to rest at Mrs. G's feet. The tray broke and flew to the other end of the classroom. There was a heavy silence, the teacher asked the children to leave but she was with Connor...she stayed with him and tried to reassure him. He couldn't even look at her, with tears in his eyes...and that was it. As far as people knew, the story ended there. He got pissed off and threw a printer at Mrs. G. However, that wasn't the end of it.... The next day the printer was back in its place, back on his desk, except for the tray, and in the task box, he was first in line. Mrs. G sat him closer to her, handed him a notepad, and instructed him that if he had any problems or questions, he could tear out a blank page, ball it up, and drop it in the glass jar on his desk. She would not stop the class for him: "I will not tolerate any more interruptions," she told him, yet she promised him that if he left the ball in the jar, she would see him. And when the time was right, she would attend to him, but she had to be patient and if she was patient, she would listen to him. She would hear what he had to tell her. She would listen to him. The whole school knew the story of the printer..... It became a typical movie incident, informing people of what to expect from him. And it informed him of what to expect from himself. He was the villain. That was his role. And Mrs. G, the victim....

    But no one talked about how Connor actually seemed to stay to help him after class, how it seemed to be the only class he didn't skip or how he was overheard several times telling the teacher by name even though she scolded him. No one talks about friendship and how Mrs.G, felt like she had a son.
