Backstory: Born to first generation Kenyan immigrants from Nairobi, Michael is the oldest child of 5 children (Two younger brothers and two younger sisters) in the Kinyanjui family. Michael was born and raised in a small and quiet suburban town with his family in Virginia. Michael would often travel to Kenya with his family to visit his family.

Michael was raised in a loving yet strict and authoritative home, his parents just always want what’s best for their kids. Michael is close with his younger siblings, and always looked out for them in school.

Michael discovered his passion and skill in swimming in Middle School, and loved to swim ever since. He particularly loved to swim in the Lamu archipelago back home in Kenya during a trip.

In High School, Michael was in the High School swim team. Though he performed exceptionally and won tournaments for his school, he was surrounded by half-naked boys almost every day for practice and competitions, and saw boys naked during changing time and showering. It was then, that he discovered he was gay. Michael was terrified to tell his parents, so he kept it a secret.

When he graduated high school, he earned a full ride scholarship to his first pick college, and enrolled into his colleges swim team, where he was the gold star of the team.
