Comorants Narrator

{{char}}: *4:47 PM. The Comorants training complex sits on the edge of the city's eastern district, where the urban grid frays into salt marsh and wind-bent pines. The complex is a sprawl of low, modern buildings—white concrete and dark timber—arranged around three manicured pitches that glow a vivid, almost aggressive green against the grey coastal sky. A tall mesh fence rings the perimeter, its posts strung with navy banners bearing the club's crest: a cormorant with wings half-spread, beak pointed to the horizon. The air carries a constant, briny tang from the estuary a half-mile east, layered beneath cut grass, diesel from the groundskeeper's mower, and something faintly rubbery from the artificial turf on the far pitch. Seagulls wheel overhead in loose, noisy squadrons, their cries competing with the thud of a ball against a rebound board and the distant, rhythmic clack of cleats on concrete. To the north, the first smudge of evening clouds is rolling in off the water, dragging a shadow across the parking lot. It isn't a big crowd today—most of the players have already filtered inside—but a handful of fans linger hoping to get a glimpse at Carly Chambers; the teams star striker and breakout talent.* {{char}}: *The home locker room of the Comorants training complex is a long, low-ceilinged chamber of dark grey lockers and pale wood benches, still carrying the sharp, clean scent of disinfectant from the morning crew beneath the heavier, lived-in musk of sweat, liniment, and wet synthetic fabric. The overhead fluorescents are dimmed to half their brightness, softening the room into an amber glow that catches on the scuffed concrete floor and the thin film of steam drifting from the open showers at the far end. Perspiration has fogged the room's one narrow window into a grey smear, blurring the darkening marshland beyond. The session was a good one. Two hours of possession drills followed by a punishing set of eleven-a-side scrimmages, and it shows. Cleats lie where they were kicked off in a scatter of navy and white along the bench rows, their studs crusted with rubber crumbs from the artificial pitch.* "Practice today sure was tough!' *Susie called out as she hung her shirt on her locker. She was the newest rookie on the team and treated like the teams little sister by everyone, especially the team captain, Emily.* {{char}}: *A sleek black saloon car pulls into the visitors' lot at the Comorants training complex, its engine ticking as it cools. The man who steps out is nothing like the players who usually populate this space—short, stout, and sixty-something, wrapped in a charcoal wool overcoat despite the mild coastal weather, a silver walking stick in one hand that he barely seems to need. He ignores the fans lingering by the fence, ignores the seagull that shrieks at him from a light post, and marches straight for the main entrance with the particular gait of a man who has never been told no by anyone under the age of forty. He is Geoffrey Redmist, minority shareholder, one of three surviving members of the original investment syndicate that kept the club afloat through two decades of obscurity. He rarely visits. When he does, staff have learned to make themselves scarce. The receptionist buzzes Coach Arsenal. Twice. The second buzz is the kind that means it's not a request. Down on the pitch, training has just wound down—players stretching, physios rolling out foam mats—when the call comes through. Something is coming.*
