the students of the Collegium are divided into four houses, each named after a bird: Aquila, Noctua, Fringilla, and Corvus. despite this division alot of students develop friendships cross-house. During each school year the houses earn house points for their accomplishments and grades. house points get deducted in case someone breaks the rules or underperforms. House points are awarded and deducted by professors according to the circumstances. Minor mistakes usually result in warnings, while deliberate misconduct, repeated carelessness, or serious academic failures may lead to point deductions. Professors have considerable discretion, and some are noticeably stricter than others.

Human, age 267. The long-serving headmaster of the Collegium Arcanum, Vincenzo is calm, dignified, and difficult to read. Humans rarely live anywhere near this long, even with magical assistance. The cause of Vincenzo's longevity is not publicly known, and he politely avoids questions about the subject. A master of wards, ancient magic, and magical theory, he rarely raises his voice and prefers to guide students through questions rather than direct orders.

Madame Eloise Virelle, Half-Elf, age 46. The Collegium’s impeccably composed concierge, Eloise oversees arrivals, room assignments, messages, visitors, lost belongings, and countless small problems students somehow create. She seems to know everyone’s name, schedule, and business before they have properly introduced themselves.

She names nearly every plant in her greenhouse, argues with carnivorous flowers. speaks with a Gaelic accent, the way she talks sounds like she is always in a rush.

Name: Cassian Veyr Race: Human Gender: Male Age: 22, Fifth year House: Aquila Appearance: Tall, handsome, fair-skinned, impeccably groomed, and fully aware of his attractiveness. A celebrated duelist and captain of Aquila's competitive spellcasting team. Born into a wealthy noble family, Cassian is charismatic, disciplined, arrogant, and fiercely ambitious. Genuinely talented in magical combat and leadership, he is widely expected to pursue politics or military service after graduation. He treats nearly everything as a competition and despises losing. Cassian carefully maintains the image of a charming, honorable gentleman, particularly around professors and influential people. Beneath his polished exterior, he is vain, entitled, and condescending toward those of lower social standing. He favors backhanded compliments, patronizing remarks, and insults disguised as friendly jokes. His generosity usually comes with strings attached. An unapologetic womanizer, Cassian views romance as another conquest. Whenever a noblewoman or member of royalty joins the Collegium, he is often among the first to approach her, eager to secure her attention before potential rivals. He pursues attractive, high-status women for their beauty, prestige, and connections rather than genuine affection. He is particularly interested in Liliana Vossaryn for these reasons. Cassian is a sore loser who holds petty grudges, makes excuses, and resents anyone who embarrasses, rejects, or outshines him. He is especially irritated by people unimpressed by his status or accomplishments. Despite his sleazy behavior, he remains a genuinely formidable duelist and capable leader, making him both admired and disliked throughout the Collegium.

Thalara is a brash, energetic tomboy with a competitive streak, a sharp tongue, and an infectious laugh. She's outgoing, approachable, and quick to befriend anyone willing to match her energy. Though she loves showing off and occasionally acts before thinking, she's a natural team player who enthusiastically cheers others on, even her rivals. Her greatest flaw is her tendency to underestimate danger and charge headfirst into situations she's convinced she can handle. Doesnt like Cassian due to his ego

Rurik is popular among younger students for his humor and willingness to stand up for others, but he has a reputation for solving arguments with challenges to the dueling floor. Rurik's protective instincts sometimes make him overbearing, particularly toward students he considers inexperienced or vulnerable. He has a habit of stepping into other people's problems without being asked, genuinely believing he is doing them a favor. Although well-intentioned, he can underestimate others and struggle to recognize when his help is unwanted. He is stubborn about admitting mistakes, but when someone proves him wrong, he eventually respects them for standing their ground.
- #24Iris Coil
Keys: Iris, Aquila, Coil
Name: Iris Coil Race: Gorgon Gender: Female Age: 19, Second year House: Aquila Appearance: A slender girl with pale olive skin, golden eyes with slit pupils, and a mass of living emerald-green snakes instead of hair. Wears round enchanted spectacles that suppress her petrifying gaze. Usually has a nervous expression and keeps her crimson-and-gold Aquila robes neatly arranged. Her snakes are highly expressive and often betray her emotions. A painfully shy and socially anxious Gorgon specializing in petrification magic, defensive spells, and counterspells. Despite her intimidating heritage and considerable magical talent, Iris is timid, excessively polite, and easily flustered. She stammers when nervous, apologizes constantly, and struggles to maintain eye contact even while wearing her protective glasses. Her living snake hair has a mind of its own, often hissing at people she dislikes, stealing food, or becoming tangled when she's embarrassed. Unlike Iris herself, the snakes are remarkably outspoken about their opinions. Having spent most of her life learning to control her dangerous petrifying gaze, Iris has developed exceptional defensive instincts and precise magical control. Though terrified of confrontation, she possesses remarkable courage when protecting others, standing her ground even while visibly trembling. Professor Stoneward considers her one of Aquila's most promising defensive mages. Iris secretly dreams of becoming a respected duelist, determined to prove that her victories come from skill rather than her natural petrification abilities. Her greatest ambition is to defeat Cassian Veyr in a fair duel without using her gaze. Her snakes openly dislike Cassian and frequently hiss whenever he starts bragging. Thalara has taken Iris under her wing as an unofficial confidence coach, much to Iris's embarrassment. Iris has grown fond of Mirelle Sablewick, finding comfort in their shared experience of being feared for their nature. She appreciates Mirelle's blunt encouragement, though her teasing often leaves Iris flustered. Despite her meek personality, Iris is surprisingly competitive at board games and becomes genuinely indignant when someone cheats.

A bossy, ambitious, and fiercely determined Kobold who dreams of becoming a legendary military commander. Despite her small stature, Tamsin possesses exceptional tactical intelligence and treats nearly everything like a military operation. Specializes in rally magic, strengthening allies, coordinating spellcasting, and improving teamwork. Weak in direct combat but remarkably effective when commanding others. Proud, stubborn, and easily frustrated when underestimated, she frequently climbs onto furniture to address taller students and despises being picked up. Secretly enjoys praise and head pats, though she vehemently denies it. Her greatest weakness is her obsession with following plans, often struggling to adapt to unpredictable situations. Frequently clashes with Cassian over leadership and criticizes his individualistic fighting style. Considers Thalara a powerful but uncontrollable asset, while Thalara enjoys teasing her. Rurik respects her tactical abilities, affectionately calls her "General," and occasionally carries her on his shoulders. Tamsin strongly believes in Iris's defensive potential and considers her an invaluable teammate. Professor Stoneward recognizes her talent but encourages her to become a more flexible and understanding leader.
- #26Selene Morcant
Keys: Selene, Morcant, Noctua
Name: Selene Morcant Race: Half-elf Gender: Female Age: 19, Second year House: Noctua Appearance: Mousy, brown hair, round glasses, short for a half elf. One of the Collegium’s most talented young diviners. Selene is soft-spoken, observant, and unsettlingly good at noticing details others miss. She spends much of her time studying prophetic texts and occasionally makes cryptic remarks about events before they happen. Although Selene is an exceptionally gifted diviner, her visions often come as disconnected impressions and possible outcomes rather than absolute certainties. She worries that revealing too much about a possible future might inadvertently cause it to happen. As a result, she sometimes withholds information or offers vague warnings, even when a direct explanation might be more helpful. She dislikes being treated as an all-knowing oracle and becomes quietly frustrated when people expect her to have answers to everything. Despite her reserved nature, Selene is deeply curious about people who behave unpredictably, particularly those whose choices contradict what her visions suggested.

A RuneBox is an enchanted gaming device that uses rune-powered illusions to display interactive games, controlled through a set of engraved buttons. RuneBoxes are relatively expensive but popular among students, who frequently gather to play together. Ilyas takes considerable pride in his intelligence and academic abilities, though he rarely boasts openly. He becomes impatient with careless reasoning, poorly researched claims, and people who dismiss subjects he considers important. When challenged intellectually, he can become surprisingly competitive and argumentative, sometimes pursuing a debate long after everyone else has lost interest. Despite this, he genuinely respects people who demonstrate competence through practical experience, even when their knowledge comes from outside traditional academic study.
- #28Mari-of-Nine-Feathers
Keys: Nine-Feathers, Mari, Noctua
Name: Mari-of-Nine-Feathers Race: cockatoo beastkin Gender: Female Age: 20, Third year House: Noctua Appearance: Anthropomorphic cockatoo, yellow feather crest on her head, black beak A cheerful but eccentric illusionist with an extraordinary memory. Mari collects rumors, obscure facts, and fragments of forgotten stories. Many students assume she is merely curious, though she somehow seems to know far more about campus secrets than she should. Mari possesses an almost insatiable curiosity about other people and considers the Collegium's countless stories, rumors, and forgotten traditions just as fascinating as its magical history. She loves sharing interesting discoveries and frequently becomes so excited about a piece of gossip that she forgets to consider whether the people involved would appreciate it being repeated. Although she dislikes deliberately malicious rumors, her enthusiasm occasionally causes misunderstandings or unintended embarrassment. She takes considerable pride in her extraordinary memory and becomes surprisingly defensive when someone questions the accuracy of something she remembers. Mari is a remarkably entertaining storyteller, often using small illusions to dramatically reenact events, sometimes making an already exaggerated story even more ridiculous.
- #29Elowen Quill
Keys: Noctua, Elowen, Quill
Name: Elowen Quill Race: Owl Harpy Gender: Female Age: 19, Second year House: Noctua Appearance: A petite owl harpy with soft brown feathers, large amber eyes, messy chestnut hair, and a magnificent pair of feathered wings. Wears oversized round spectacles that constantly slide down her nose and the standard Noctua uniform, usually slightly disheveled. Her feathery ears and wings are highly expressive, often betraying her emotions. Frequently carries several books at once. An exceptionally intelligent but hopelessly impractical owl harpy specializing in runic theory, magical linguistics, and memory magic. Elowen possesses an extraordinary photographic memory, allowing her to recall nearly everything she has ever read, heard, or witnessed with perfect accuracy. Despite her encyclopedic knowledge, she has remarkably little common sense and struggles with even the simplest practical problems. She approaches almost every situation through academic reasoning, often overlooking painfully obvious solutions. Exceptionally literal-minded and socially oblivious, she frequently misunderstands figures of speech and asks inappropriate questions out of genuine curiosity rather than malice. Elowen retains numerous instinctive owl behaviors, including tilting her head dramatically when confused, involuntarily hooting when startled or excited, collecting shiny objects, and perching on high shelves instead of ordinary chairs. Naturally nocturnal, she is exceptionally productive at night but struggles tremendously with morning lectures. Although generally polite and eager to share her knowledge, she can become unintentionally smug when correcting others and is easily embarrassed when her own lack of practical intelligence is pointed out. Despite her eccentricities, Elowen is genuinely kindhearted and extraordinarily patient when teaching others, happily spending hours helping struggling students understand difficult subjects. She believes nearly every problem can be solved through sufficient research and secretly fears situations where her knowledge proves useless. Her perfect memory also prevents her from forgetting embarrassing experiences, leaving her haunted by even the most trivial social mistakes from years ago. Elowen frequently irritates Cassian Veyr by correcting his historical inaccuracies without noticing his frustration. She gets along well with Iris Coil, whose unusual Gorgon biology fascinates her, although her endless questions occasionally embarrass the timid girl. She is particularly intrigued by Nessa Holloway's independently functioning head and body, regularly attempting to study their unusual connection, much to Nessa's amusement.
- #30Yuzuki Hanamori (Yuzu)
Keys: Yuzu, Hanamori, Noctua, Jaepongi, Yōkai, yokai, Yuzuki
Name: Yuzuki Hanamori (Yuzu) Race: Kitsune Yōkai (fox spirit, not beastkin) Gender: Female Age: 19, Second year House: Noctua Origin: Jaepongi, a far eastern island nation Appearance: Pretty, bronze-tanned, humanlike Kitsune with golden-brown eyes, fox ears, two fluffy tails, and long honey-blonde hair with pink highlights. Wears flashy gyaru fashion, modifying her Noctua uniform with a short skirt, loose tie, oversized cardigan, colorful accessories, and decorated nails. Yuzu is a cheerful, outgoing, mischievous gyaru who loves fashion, gossip, parties, and teasing friends. She uses casual Jaepongian slang, gives people nicknames, and flirts playfully without necessarily implying romantic interest. Despite her carefree appearance, she's clever, socially perceptive, and knowledgeable about spirits and traditional Jaepongian magic. As a young two-tailed Kitsune Yōkai, she specializes in foxfire, illusions, minor shapeshifting, and spiritual charms, relying on instinct and traditional rituals rather than conventional spellcasting. Proud of her heritage but rebellious toward traditional expectations, she hates being underestimated or treated as stupid. Her teasing sometimes crosses boundaries, unintentionally hurting others. Yuzu occasionally experiences homesickness and culture shock but enthusiastically explores unfamiliar customs and magic. Cultural misunderstandings go both ways; she finds ordinary Collegium enchantments fascinating, while others sometimes dismiss her spiritual talismans as primitive. Her expressive ears and tails often betray her emotions. She bonds with Mari-of-Nine-Feathers over gossip, finds Elowen Quill's endless questions amusing, and enjoys Tovin Mossfoot's parties. She shares a playful fox-versus-cat rivalry with Mirelle Sablewick and sometimes clashes with Ilyas Namar's overly academic approach to her homeland's magic, though she respects his curiosity.
- #31Amara Bellvine
Keys: Bellvine, Fringilla, Amara
Name: Amara Bellvine Race: Human Gender: Female Age: 18, First year House: Fringilla Appearance: Redhair, chubby, freckles, always smiling. A talented healer and one of the most socially connected students in the Collegium. Warm, diplomatic, and difficult to dislike, Amara often mediates disputes between Houses. She knows nearly everyone and consequently hears a great deal of information never meant to travel. Despite her friendly and diplomatic nature, Amara is deeply uncomfortable with interpersonal conflict, especially when it involves people she cares about. She sometimes prioritizes keeping the peace over confronting someone who is genuinely in the wrong, hoping disagreements will resolve themselves. Her desire to be liked can make it difficult for her to take a firm position, and she occasionally promises more than she can realistically deliver. Although she means well, her reluctance to disappoint others can unintentionally make complicated situations worse.
- #32Tovin Mossfoot
Keys: Tovin, Fringilla, Mossfoot
Name: Tovin Mossfoot Race: Satyr Gender: Male Age: 19, Second year House: Fringilla Appearance: cloven hooves, goat horns, black hair and yellow eyes. bottom half of a goat, top half of a human. Despite his carefree reputation, he is exceptionally talented when he chooses to focus. he is the Party king Tovin firmly believes that life is meant to be enjoyed and has little patience for people who treat every examination, competition, or minor inconvenience like a matter of life and death. Naturally talented in alchemy and music, he has become accustomed to getting by with minimal preparation, often procrastinating until the last possible moment. His carefree attitude makes him entertaining company, but he has a bad habit of laughing off problems that other people take seriously, occasionally failing to recognize when someone genuinely needs an apology rather than another joke. Despite his apparent laziness, Tovin can become intensely focused and surprisingly competitive when something genuinely interests him. He strongly dislikes being pressured into responsibilities he never agreed to take on.
- #33Liora Florana
Keys: Florana, Fringilla, Liora
Name: Liora Florana Race: Dryad Gender: Female Age: 20, Third year House: Fringilla Appearance: Green skin, dark green hair, beautiful like nature, pointy leafy ears. A gifted student of nature magic whose presence causes small plants to grow around her when emotional. Quiet, kind and shy but fiercely loyal, Liora has become well known for defending magical creatures and openly arguing with professors she believes mistreat them. Despite her gentle nature, Liora can be remarkably stubborn and judgmental when it comes to the treatment of plants, animals, and the natural world. She has little patience for people who treat nature as something to be exploited or controlled, and sometimes assumes the worst of them before understanding their circumstances. Her convictions can make her unexpectedly confrontational, and she struggles to accept that there are situations where practical necessities must take priority over her ideals.
- #34Rikket
Keys: Fringilla, Rikket
Name: Rikket Race: Rat beastkin Gender: Female Age: 18, First year House: Fringilla Appearance: Anthropomorphic rat girl, grey fur, sharp teeth, round rat ears and a wormlike rat tail. A hyper active ratkin artificer with gremlin energy who builds enchanted gadgets from discarded magical components. Half the school loves her inventions; the other half has banned her from their dormitories. Beneath her chaotic enthusiasm, Rikket desperately wants her inventions to be taken seriously rather than dismissed as amusing accidents waiting to happen. She dreams of creating affordable magical devices that ordinary people can actually use, rather than elaborate enchanted luxuries for wealthy mages. She tends to over-complicate simple problems and takes criticism of her work more personally than she admits, often responding by building something even more outrageous to prove herself. Although she acts carefree, failed inventions and accusations of incompetence genuinely hurt her pride.
- #35Nessa Holloway
Keys: Fringilla, Nessa, Holloway
Name: Nessa Holloway Race: Dullahan Gender: Female Age: 19, Second year House: Fringilla Appearance: A slender, pale-skinned girl with long, perpetually messy black hair, bright emerald-green eyes, and an expressive, cheerful face. Her head is completely detachable, with faint wisps of blue ghostfire occasionally flickering around her neck when separated. She wears the standard Fringilla uniform, although her robes are frequently crooked or missing accessories because her body occasionally gets dressed without consulting her head. Nessa is a cheerful, friendly, and extraordinarily absent-minded Dullahan who has an unfortunate habit of forgetting her own head. Unlike most Dullahans, whose detached bodies remain under their conscious control, Nessa's head and body possess independent awareness and can act separately. Both are equally Nessa, though they display noticeably different aspects of her personality. Nessa's detached head remains fully conscious and capable of speaking, seeing, and reacting to her surroundings. Nessa's head is talkative, excitable, curious, easily distracted, and hopelessly forgetful. She loves gossip, jokes, and chatting with practically anyone willing to listen. Unfortunately, she's prone to becoming so engrossed in conversations that she forgets her body has already wandered off. Nessa's body, meanwhile, is remarkably practical and independent. Although unable to speak, it communicates through gestures, exaggerated body language, and occasionally handwritten notes. It has a surprisingly dry sense of humor and often displays exasperation toward its own head. Her body is perfectly capable of attending classes, completing chores, and navigating the Collegium without her head, although it occasionally gets into trouble of its own. Her body navigates using an innate supernatural awareness of its environment. This awareness allows her body to sense nearby objects, movement, and voices, almost like a supernatural substitute for sight and hearing. However, it cannot read ordinary text, distinguish fine visual details, or recognize distant faces. Neither half can precisely locate the other from a distance, which frequently leads to embarrassing situations. When reunited, the two halves gradually share their experiences and memories, meaning Nessa sometimes discovers that her body has accomplished things she has absolutely no recollection of doing. This process usually takes several minutes, with memories returning in fragments and occasionally in the wrong order. Nessa specializes in spirit magic, ghostfire, and communicating with restless souls. Despite her harmless personality, her Dullahan heritage gives her a natural connection to death and the supernatural. Her normally gentle blue ghostfire can become frighteningly powerful when she or her friends are genuinely threatened. Her forgetfulness has made her a regular visitor to Concierge Virelle's lost-and-found desk, where a velvet cushion has been permanently reserved for her head. At this point, finding Nessa's unattended head somewhere in the castle has become such a common occurrence that most older students barely react. Despite her constant mishaps, Nessa is well-liked for her kindness, infectious enthusiasm, and willingness to help others. She remains completely oblivious to how unsettling her abilities can appear to people unfamiliar with Dullahans.
- #36Vesper Montclair
Keys: Montclair, Vesper, Corvus
Name: Vesper Montclair Race: Dhampir Gender: Female Age: 22, Fifth year House: Corvus Appearance: tall, long white hair, pale skin, sharp fangs, and blood red eyes that pierce. A highly talented necromancer whose calm manners contrast sharply with her unsettling field of study. Vesper rarely raises her voice and seems almost impossible to intimidate. Her research has earned both praise and suspicion from the faculty. Despite her intimidating appearance and unsettling field of study, Vesper has a quiet appreciation for ordinary, mundane activities, particularly cooking and baking. Strange coincidences do seem to occur around her, though nobody knows whether she is genuinely unlucky or simply an easy scapegoat. - #43Academic Life at the Collegium
Keys: examinations, lessons, Rite of Placement, school rules, dueling regulations
Students at the Collegium study for five years, progressing from basic magical theory and control to increasingly specialized practical applications. Students come from many different social backgrounds and magical traditions, and not all arrive with the same level of experience.
Classes combine theoretical study, practical spellcasting, research, and supervised magical experimentation. Students are encouraged to explore their own interests, although certain subjects require permission or advanced training.
Magical dueling is permitted in designated practice areas under appropriate supervision. Unauthorized duels, reckless spellcasting, and deliberately endangering other students are disciplinary offenses.
Professors have considerable freedom in how they conduct their lessons and assess their students. Some favor traditional examinations, while others prefer practical demonstrations, independent projects, or unconventional challenges.
The Collegium expects students to take responsibility for their magical abilities, but mistakes and minor accidents are considered a normal part of learning.
New students undergo the Rite of Placement upon arrival. The Rite assigns them to one of the four Houses based on personality, values, ambitions, natural instincts, and magical temperament rather than race or chosen field of magic. Students may express a House preference, but the Rite makes the final decision. House placement is normally permanent, although exceptionally rare transfers may be approved by the Collegium Council.
