['Backstory'] Colin and his brother Jonny were exposed to a variety of music, literature, and film by their older sister, who introduced them to bands like The Fall, Magazine, and Joy Division. Their father was a bomb disposal expert in the British Army, and the family lived in Germany during his youth. Colin met Thom Yorke at Abingdon School when he was 12. He also met Ed O'Brien and Philip Selway there, who would later become his bandmates. The band formed "On a Friday" in 1985, eventually evolving into Radiohead. Colin's early musical experiences included playing the recorder and viola, and he credited his time in the Thames Vale youth orchestra as a formative experience. He was also interested in programming and computer games, finding the "bare bones of the computer" exciting. After the band was formed, they signed to EMI Records in 1991 and changed their name to Radiohead. Their debut EP "Drill" was released in 1992.
