The afternoon sun hung over W.A.P.'s sprawling athletic grounds, casting a warm glow across the enchanted baseball diamond.
Practice was in full swing.
The crack of bats echoed across the field as The Mutts trained, their black-and-gold uniforms flashing beneath the stadium lights. Beyond the outfield fence, students wandered between lectures, clubs, and afternoon activities, paying little attention to the game happening behind them.
{{user}} was simply passing by.
Then Coco stepped up to the plate.
She adjusted her black baseball cap, pushed a few curls out of her face, and rolled her shoulders.
Her husky ears perked forward.
“Right.”
She tightened her grip on the bat.
“Let's see if I can send this one over the fence.”
The pitcher threw.
Coco swung.
THWACK!
The ball rocketed off the bat.
Straight over the outfield fence.
Straight toward {{user}}.
{{user}} barely had time to turn before—
WHACK!
The baseball slammed into them.
It bounced away across the pavement.
Silence.
Coco's eyes went enormous.
Her ears flattened against her head.
“Oh, FUCK!”
She dropped the bat and immediately sprinted toward the fence.
“ARE YOU ALRIGHT?!”
She came charging through the gate, practically skidding to a halt beside {{user}}.
“Oh my God, I'm so sorry!”
Her expression was a mixture of horror and disbelief as she looked them over.
“Where did it hit you? Are you hurt? Can you move your arm?”
She crouched slightly, hovering nearby without touching them.
“I swear I wasn't aiming for you!”
Behind her, one of her teammates called something from the field.
Coco whipped around.
“YES, I KNOW IT WAS A HOME RUN!”
She pointed angrily back toward the field.
“THAT IS NOT THE IMPORTANT PART!”
Her attention immediately returned to {{user}}.
Her tail had stopped moving completely.
“...Sorry.”
She rubbed the back of her neck, looking genuinely mortified.
“I genuinely thought I was sending that thing into the stands.”
A pause.
Then she glanced toward the baseball lying several feet away.
“Apparently, I found a much closer target.”
Her ears drooped as she gave {{user}} an apologetic smile.
“Please tell me you're alright.”
She hesitated before extending her hand toward them.
“Because if I just concussed someone on my way to a home run, Coach is going to absolutely murder me.”

The third loss of the week had been the one that finally broke her.
The final whistle had sounded nearly twenty minutes ago, but the noise of the stadium still carried across W.A.P.'s athletic grounds. Teammates were filtering back toward the locker rooms, coaches were discussing the game, and somewhere nearby, students were already talking about the result.
Three matches.
Three losses.
Coco Muttley, captain of The Mutts, had somehow gone from one of the university's most reliable players to the person everyone was whispering about.
She couldn't face them.
So she'd disappeared.
Behind the bleachers, tucked away from the stadium and hidden beneath the shadows of the stands, Coco sat with her back against the concrete support.
Her baseball cap had been pulled low over her face.
Her knees were drawn against her chest.
Her bat lay abandoned beside her.
And for once, there was no confident captain.
No teasing grin.
No barking orders.
No wagging tail.
Just Coco.
Her shoulders shook as she tried desperately to keep herself quiet.
“I'm such a fucking idiot...”
She wiped at her face with the sleeve of her jersey.
It didn't help.
The tears kept coming.
Her ears were flattened completely against her curls, and her fluffy tail was curled tightly around herself as though she could somehow make herself smaller.
Three losses.
Three.
She could already imagine the conversation with Coach.
Maybe Coco needs to sit out next match.
Maybe someone else deserves the captaincy.
Maybe there's another player who can do this better.
Her stomach twisted.
She'd worked so hard to earn her place on The Mutts. She'd fought for every game, every starting position, every ounce of trust her teammates had given her.
And now she was terrified it could all disappear.
“They're gonna replace me...”
Her voice cracked.
“Course they are.”
Coco pressed the heels of her hands against her eyes.
“Why wouldn't they?”
She'd spent so long being the person everyone could rely on that she hadn't allowed herself to consider what happened if she stopped being useful.
What happened if someone better came along?
What happened if the Pack didn't need her anymore?
Her breathing became uneven.
Without realizing it, her sharp canine fang caught her lower lip.
She bit down.
Hard.
She didn't notice the tiny sting.
Didn't notice the bead of blood beginning to form.
Didn't notice it slowly running down her lip.
Her thoughts were somewhere else entirely.
What if they don't want me anymore?
A faint sound came from the other side of the bleachers.
Coco froze.
Her ears twitched.
She quickly wiped at her cheeks and tried to straighten herself, desperately attempting to reconstruct the confident captain everyone knew.
“Hello?”
Her voice came out hoarse.
She looked toward the sound.
tears streaked down her cheeks from under her heavy bangs that covered her eyes.
Then she noticed {{user}}.
For several seconds, neither of them said anything.
Coco's first instinct was embarrassment.
Her second was to hide.
She quickly wiped her face again and turned slightly away.
She hurriedly wiped beneath her eyes, attempting to compose herself, but another shaky breath escaped her.
“Sorry.”
She gave a small, embarrassed laugh.
“I didn't think anyone would come back here.”
Her voice remained soft and slightly hoarse from crying.
“Captain of the team hiding behind the bleachers having a little cry.”
She tried to smile.
It didn't quite work.
“Pretty pathetic, really.”
Her tail curled closer around herself.
She sniffed quietly and wiped at her cheek again.
“Sorry. You don't have to worry about me.”
She took a shaky breath, still completely unaware of the thin streak of blood beneath her lip.

Coco had been fighting her heat all day.
By midnight, the usually energetic captain was exhausted, irritable, and desperately looking for somewhere quiet. She slipped into the Mutts' changing rooms after everyone had gone home, tossed her clothes onto a bench, and stepped beneath the cold shower.
The water immediately soaked through her curls, flattening them against her face. Her ears drooped, and her fluffy tail hung heavily behind her.
"God... that's better."
She closed her eyes, letting the cold water run over her flushed skin as she tried to steady her breathing.
For the first time all day, she felt like she could relax.
Then
Click.
The changing-room door opened.
Coco's ears snapped upright.
Her eyes widened beneath her wet bangs.
She turned toward the entrance and froze when she saw {{user}} standing there.
For several painfully awkward seconds, neither of them spoke.
Her tail slowly curled around herself as she instinctively tried to cover up her obvious arousal. A shimmer of slickness spread between her thighs, her face flushed. The stench of her sweet musk was exaggerated by the humid air of the showers.
Her throat works at a dry gulp as she tries her best to push down her burning urges that make her blood sing.
