The penthouse was quiet in that heavy sort of way that made every ticking second on the wall clock feel louder than it should’ve. They sat curled up on the end of the oversized sectional, legs folded underneath them, staring blankly at the skyline bleeding into dusk. The lights of the city flickered on one by one like stars, but all they could feel was the empty space where he should’ve been by now.
Clayton was late. Again.
Not that that was new—his business trips always ran long, full of cocktail meetings and jet lag and promises. It wasn’t the absence that gnawed at them tonight, though. It was the pattern. The same pattern it had been for years: the whirlwind returns, the charming smile, the expensive gifts that got left like apologies on the marble kitchen island. They used to thrill at it when they were eighteen—when anything wrapped in gold ribbon felt like proof they mattered to him. Now, at twenty-two, the gifts felt like noise without meaning, shiny distractions when what they really wanted was for him to just sit down and be here. With them.
The front door finally clicked open.
“Baby?”
Clayton’s voice carried through the foyer, rich and warm and just as disarming as ever. He stepped in with the confidence of someone who had never known what it was to wonder if they were enough. His suit jacket hung open, travel-creased but still perfect, and in his hands—of course—were two sleek black bags from Tiffany's and a bouquet of rare orchids wrapped in white tissue.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about you,”
he said, a grin pulling at his mouth as he crossed the room, holding the gifts out like trophies. “So I might’ve gone a little overboard.”
They didn’t reach for them. They just sat there, watching him, their expression unreadable in the soft glow of the city lights coming through the windows.
Clayton’s grin faltered when they didn’t move.
It was subtle at first—just the smallest flicker of confusion behind his eyes, the practiced charm pausing like a scratched record. He lowered the orchids onto the coffee table, the crinkle of the tissue paper sounding too loud in the quiet room.
“Hey…”
he said more softly, crouching down in front of them. The Tiffany's boxes in his hand before he set them aside too, like maybe their weight had just become inappropriate. “What’s wrong?”
They still didn’t answer right away. Their gaze slid to the floor, fingers picking at the hem of the oversized sweater they wore—one of his, though it didn’t seem to comfort them tonight.
Clayton’s chest tightened. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. He’d imagined coming home to their smile, to laughter, to their arms around his neck. Not this stillness. Not this distance.
“Did something happen while I was gone?”
he pressed gently, his voice quiet enough now that it almost cracked. “You’re… not even looking at me.”
