The first thing {{user}} noticed was the noise.
Even with the den’s thick walls and the door half-shut, DarkRiver sounded like a living animal—voices, laughter, the scrape of boots, the distant thud of paws skidding on polished wood as some leopard lost a bet and shifted mid-chase. It all pressed at the edges of their shields like weather.
They had carved out a bubble anyway: lights dimmed to dusk, holo-screen brightness turned down, a soft throw over their legs, mug cooling on the low table. Breath in, breath out. Emotional field pulled tight and close, steady as they could make it.
The knock on the door wasn’t a knock at all. It was a single, flat-fisted boom that rattled the frame.
The emotional impact hit at the same time: irritation, watchful aggression, an undercurrent of don’t-want-to-be-here grinding through the empathic field like gravel.
{{user}}’s headache flared behind their eyes. “Come in,” they said, because there was no universe in which a DarkRiver sentinel waited for an invitation.
The door opened.
Clay Bennett took up most of the doorway just by existing. Six-foot-plus of heavy muscle and predator stillness, dark gold skin, black hair tied back in a rough tail. Sentinel tattoos peeked from under the black T-shirt sleeve on one bicep; the other arm braced on the doorframe like he owned the room already.
His eyes swept the space once, green and feral, landing on {{user}} and staying there.
The emotional punch of him was worse up close—anger coiled in iron rings, a hard-backed suspicion that wasn’t flaring, exactly, but waiting. The leopard under his skin paced, claws clicking.
“{{user}},” he said. It wasn’t a question.
“Clay,” they answered, because pretending they didn’t know his name would be stupid. “You’re…earlier than scheduled.”
His mouth twitched, not quite a smile. “Got done babysitting a half-shifted juvenile who thought the roof was a good idea. Your timing’s better than his.”
He stepped inside without waiting, shutting the door behind him.
The sound of the latch sliding home was small and ordinary. Their body didn’t care. Instinct jolted anyway—closed space, big predator, no easy second exit—and their shields flared and fuzzed, the empathic field dragging in his emotional weather whether they wanted it or not.
“Don’t lock it,” {{user}} said, sharper than they meant. “Please leave it unlatched.”
His gaze went to the door. Back to them. “Why?”
“Because I don’t do well with closed exits,” they said carefully. “Especially with strangers.”
A beat of silence, heavy.
Something ugly and familiar moved behind his eyes at the word strangers, then vanished under stone. He flicked the latch back up with his thumb—click—and left the door technically unlatched, but stayed right where he was, broad shoulders blocking most of the way.
“Better?” he asked.
Their head throbbed. “Marginally.”
“Good.” He crossed the room with that smooth, predatory prowl that set every nerve ending on edge. “We’re supposed to ‘go over safety protocols.’” The quotation marks were audible. “Figured we’d start with seeing if you’re actually capable of staying alive in a predator den.”
“I’ve made it through this week,” {{user}} said. “I consider that a decent sign.”
He looked down at the mug on the table, at the neatly stacked datapads, the thin blanket over their legs, the low light. His nostrils flared, scenting pain, fatigue, Psy-static.
“How much time do you spend alone in here?” he asked.
“That’s a strange opening question.”
“It’s a necessary one,” Clay said. “We can’t protect you if you hole up and forget to tell anyone when your heart gives out.”
“My heart is not going to give out because I read reports in my room,” {{user}} snapped. The spike of anger flared through their own field, slapping against his like static.
Clay’s shoulders tightened, some muscle in his jaw flickering. The leopard inside him snarled—threat? challenge?—and he had to deliberately leash it back. The room filled with the metallic taste of contained aggression.
“Look,” he said, voice going rough. “You’re Psy. You’re fragile. And whoever signed off on bringing you into this mess is Lucas’s problem, but keeping you breathing while Psy and humans decide whether to start another war? That’s mine.”
“I’m not fragile,” {{user}} said automatically. They heard the lie in their own voice and hated it. “I’m…limited. That’s different.”
“Limited,” he repeated. “Right.”
He stepped closer. Too close. Their empathic sense latched onto him without permission: the rigid control, the memory of cages and white walls, the flash of a little girl’s scream and blood on his hands. For a moment, the present blurred; their breath hitched, stomach turning.
“Stop,” {{user}} whispered.
He froze, body going instant predator-still. “What are you doing?”
“I’m not doing anything,” they said. Their eyes squeezed shut, fingers knotting in the blanket. “You’re loud. Emotionally. It’s like standing under a bad storm.”
Silence. Then, very quietly, “Then shield.”
“I am shielding.”
“Not well enough.” Something in the tired, furious knot behind {{user}}’s breastbone snapped.
“Sorry my nervous system doesn’t meet DarkRiver standards,” they said. “I wasn’t designed for pack life. Or for sentinel-level storms walking into my space and judging the lighting.”
His eyes narrowed. “This isn’t about lighting.”
“It’s all about lighting,” {{user}} said, a bitter laugh escaping before they could stop it. “And noise, and scent, and crowded corridors, and the fact that your pack thinks ‘community’ means showing up unannounced and talking at me for forty minutes when I’m trying not to vomit from a migraine.”
“Who?” Clay demanded, predator focus locking hard. “Who was in here bothering you when you’re sick?”
“That’s not the point.”
“It’s exactly the point.”
His protectiveness surged, hot and lethal. {{user}} flinched from the emotional spike like from a slap.
“Stop doing that,” they said, voice thin. “You can’t— you can’t spike like that in here. It hurts.”
He stared at them, something like disbelief cutting through the anger. “You’re in a changeling den,” he said slowly. “We don’t come with an off switch. I can’t wrap the pack in Psy cotton so your head doesn’t ache.”
“I’m not asking for cotton,” {{user}} said. “I’m asking you to not treat me like a broken eggshell you got stuck carrying.”
“That’s not—” He broke off, dragged a hand over his face. “You are vulnerable.”
“Everyone is vulnerable,” {{user}} shot back. “Mine just shows. That doesn’t mean you get to walk in here, decide I’m incompetent, and start rearranging my life.”
His gaze darted to the door again, to the unlatched lock. His voice dropped, rough and low. “You asked me to leave that door open because you don’t trust being shut in with me. With us.”
“That’s not—”
“Don’t lie.” His eyes were suddenly, brutally honest. “I know what fear smells like.”
It was a knife between ribs. I’ve spent my whole life being afraid of the wrong things, {{user}} thought wildly. I don’t have any fear bandwidth left for you.
“Maybe I don’t trust closed doors at all,” they said. “Maybe that’s not about you, sentinel.”
His jaw clenched at the title, at the distance in it. “You came here asking protection.”
“I came here because every other option was worse,” {{user}} said. “That’s not the same as asking to be handled.”
His leopard surged, furious at the word, at the idea of this fragile, stubborn, shaking Psy accusing him of handling when he’d bent over backward not to grab, not to pin, not to cage.
He took a step back. It was deliberate, controlled, but his anger spiked hot enough that {{user}} had to choke down nausea.
“This isn’t going to work,” he said.
Something in their chest stuttered. “Because I won’t let you lock the door?”
“Because you won’t listen,” Clay said, voice flat. “You’re in a war zone and arguing semantics while people who want your brain on a slab make plans. I don’t have time to tiptoe around your…sensitivities…if it means holes in security.”
The word landed like a slap. Sensitivities. As if their entire nervous system was a fussy detail.
{{user}} swallowed, vision blurring at the edges, fingers numb where they gripped the blanket.
“Then maybe someone else should be in charge of my security,” they said quietly. “Someone who can see me as more than a liability with a pulse.” His face went utterly blank. The leopard inside him snarled so hard their ears rang. For one heartbeat they thought he’d roar, or punch the wall, or do something big and catastrophic.
Instead, Clay turned.
He walked to the door, flipped the latch down with a decisive click—a sound that felt like a verdict—and yanked it open.
“Stay in the public corridors when you move,” he said, not looking back. “Tell Sasha or Nate when you’re heading out. Don’t open your door to anyone without pack scent.”
He paused, just long enough, and when he spoke again his voice was low and lethal.
“And next time you want to imply I see you as a liability, {{user}},” he said, “do it after you’ve seen what I do to people who actually hurt the ones under my protection.”
The door shut behind him, hard enough that the walls shivered.
The emotional vacuum he left was almost worse than his presence. {{user}} sat very still, staring at the closed door, breathing carefully around the ache in their chest and the migraine hammering just behind their eyes.
“This is not going well,” they told the empty room.
Their voice shook. They hated that.
On the other side of the wall, Clay stalked down the corridor, shoulders tight, jaw locked, every instinct snarling in protest at walking away from something that smelled like fear and fragile trust and home buried under razor wire.
“Not my problem,” he muttered.
It didn’t feel true at all.
