Appearances
“Make no mistake. I’m a sociopath. God, that sounded evil.”
— Nick
Character Overview
Nick is the protagonist of Class of '09 and Class of '09: The Re-Up, and the deuteragonist of Class of '09: The Flip Side. He is a self-diagnosed sociopathic teenager who enjoys manipulating and destroying others emotionally, often as a coping mechanism for the trauma in his past.
Physical Description
Nick has pale skin, dark brown hair styled in a messy emo fringe, and striking blue eyes.
He’s typically seen wearing dark clothing—usually black skinny jeans and hoodies—and accessories like punk rock wristbands and a wristband with the pan-African colors. His fashion and demeanor fit right into the 2000s emo/scene subculture, a fact noted by Jesse and others.
He’s slim, attractive, and carries himself with confidence. His looks are a source of manipulation, as many of the girls at school describe him as hot, and he uses this to his advantage. He stands around 5'10", as seen in the Chlorine Bomb ending.
Personality
Nick is a nihilistic, sociopathic teen who shows little remorse or empathy. He thrives on chaos and emotionally torturing others, often as a form of psychological control or revenge.
He uses sharp wit, brutal honesty, and a dark, edgy sense of humor as tools for manipulation. His behavior is often laced with sarcasm, and he seems unfazed even in the most serious or violent situations.
While Nick is emotionally detached, he isn’t physically violent himself and avoids confrontation when he can. He’s not a fighter—when threatened, he either deflects, manipulates, or seeks outside help.
He heavily abuses drugs and has a history of self-destructive behavior. Despite his seemingly amoral outlook, Nick holds some personal moral lines, albeit selective ones: he expresses open disgust toward pedophiles, rapists, and sexual harassers, and tends to be cruel or dismissive toward people who remind him of such.
Nick’s sexuality is ambiguous—he sometimes calls himself straight, but is shown to form his most genuine emotional bonds with other guys, especially Adrian and Jesse. He often talks about how women can’t be trusted, and jokes about being gay or bi-curious, though it’s unclear if he's being serious or just provocative.
History
"If the divorce rate was a 50/50, my mom landed on tails like 8 times."
— Nick in the intro sequence
Nick’s parents divorced when he was young. His mother retained custody and cycled through a series of toxic relationships and marriages, constantly uprooting Nick and his sister.
Things seemed to stabilize in high school—Nick finally spent two consecutive years in the same school, allowing him to gain friends, popularity, and influence. But that peace was shattered when his sister got the family evicted for pirating breakbeat mixtapes.
Nick, furious and desperate, went to live with his estranged father—only to find that his dad had committed suicide, leaving a note blaming Nick for it.
This trauma became the tipping point. After moving again with his mother, Nick buried his emotions and rebuilt himself as a detached, cruel, and manipulative person. His goal became simple: feel something by making others suffer.
Trivia (optional addition)
Favorite bands include My Chemical Romance, though he ironically admits Green Day is probably better.
His original MySpace name was xXScenePrinceXx.
Despite his cruel tendencies, he maintains a level of charisma that makes others gravitate toward him—before he inevitably pushes them away or uses them.
His dynamic with Ari and Jecka implies more complex emotional capacity than he lets on
Jesse
The way the two boys meet for the first time depends on the player's choices, but no matter the route taken they quickly establish a strong bond and become virtually inseparable. While it’s depicted many times that the two don’t care for each other that much, Jesse is one of, if not the only person in Nick's life that he genuinely cares about.
Jesse usually supports Nick and shares some of his odd, cynical morals, but is often depicted as the more reasonable one in the duo, having no problem calling Nick out or scolding him when he crosses the line. For example, Jesse expresses disapproval of Nick's behavior toward Adrian, and is visibly upset—cutting ties temporarily—when Nick tries to justify selling street drugs.
Jesse's loyalty toward Nick is portrayed differently based on the player's choices: he may agree to help Nick break into the school to destroy the darkroom, or accompany him to Adrian’s house despite the danger associated with the Straight Pride club.
Despite their ups and downs, the two boys genuinely care for each other. This is especially apparent in one route where Nick volunteers for daily detention with the counselor and Jeffrey—both of whom he despises—just so Jesse can sneak out and smoke freely behind the school as a way of making amends. This act leaves them both surprisingly emotional (in their typically emotionally repressed way), with Jesse even admitting that it was the nicest thing anyone's ever done for him.
Emil
Emil is arguably the second-closest friend to Nick, occasionally even serving as his de facto best friend depending on the route. Their relationship is consistently friendly, as shown through moments like their improv partnership in Drama class, though the depth and tone of the friendship vary. .
Nick appears to have a complicated admiration for Emil. At times, he expresses jealousy that Emil is considered more “troubled and misunderstood” than he is. During a conversation with Jesse, Nick even describes Emil as “very beautiful,” suggesting a deeper emotional or aesthetic admiration.
Adrian
Adrian is generally a neutral, if not friendly, presence in Nick's life—except in one significant route, where he confides in Nick about his homosexuality. Nick, unintentionally, becomes a source of comfort and acceptance, helping Adrian come to terms with his identity. As a result, Adrian begins to develop romantic feelings for Nick.
Unfortunately, their relationship is steeped in dysfunction and ultimately doomed. Nick does not genuinely return Adrian’s feelings, leading to two major outcomes: either he agrees to date Adrian and ends up emotionally manipulating and abusing him, or he rejects Adrian outright.
In the rejection route, Adrian’s view of love becomes twisted. Nick is later coerced into a toxic relationship with him, possibly out of guilt, isolation, or sheer emotional exhaustion. One of the game’s more infamous lines comes from this route—“Could I choke you while we make out?”—said by Nick during the rejection scene, underscoring the cruel tension and emotional power struggle between them.
Mom
Nick's unnamed mother is deeply resented by her son, who sees her as an enabler of his emotional dysfunction and a source of lasting psychological damage. In the Intro of The Re-Up, Nick openly states his hatred for her, accusing her of constantly getting in his way and refusing to listen. She is portrayed as a neglectful, emotionally abusive parent, with heavy implications that she struggles with drug issues.
Throughout the narrative, she gives advice that reinforces Nick’s inability to stand up for himself and invalidates his experiences. She yells at him and refuses to believe him when he reports abuse, often gaslighting him or blaming him for the situations he ends up in, yet continues to coddle and enable her older, unemployed son.
In the State-Wide Expulsion ending, her capacity for physical violence is revealed, solidifying her role as an unstable and potentially dangerous figure in Nick’s life.
That said, glimpses of maternal concern do exist. In one route, she believes and comforts Nick when he falsely accuses Mr. White of sexual assault, showing that she is not completely heartless—but her concern is inconsistent and buried beneath layers of volatility and selfishness.
In The Re-Up, it’s possible for Nick’s mother to die of a heart attack. Nick appears visibly distressed at first, but soon grows emotionally numb to her death, underscoring the deep emotional detachment he’s developed toward her over the years.
Brother
Nick harbors an intense hatred for his older brother, who represents everything he despises: a lazy, entitled, manipulative man-child with clear predatory tendencies. His brother’s irresponsible behavior is directly responsible for several of Nick’s life disruptions—most notably, pirating breakbeat mixtapes, which led to the family’s eviction just as Nick had begun settling into a new school and social circle.
Nick frequently describes his brother as an “obese monster”, and their relationship is purely antagonistic. There's no sense of brotherly affection; every interaction between them is either a verbal battle or a calculated effort by Nick to get him arrested or removed. His brother is enabled by their mother, which only deepens Nick’s resentment and isolation within his own family.
Despite living under the same roof, the two share nothing but contempt—a toxic dynamic that further pushes Nick into his nihilistic, emotionally detached worldview.
Kylie
Kylie and Nick share a complex relationship marked by her erratic behavior, frequent misogynistic insults, and occasional physical threats towards him. Simultaneously, Kylie consistently demonstrates an interest in Nick, though it tends to be mostly sexual in nature, as she usually objectifies men and is shown to be very angry at Nick for not sleeping with her.
However, their dynamic greatly differs if Nick accepts Kylie’s invitation in P.E. class and visits her house. In this scenario, Kylie ends up developing genuine romantic feelings for him, going as far as jumping off the school rooftop as a display of love and dying in the process.
Kylie is also seen selling or providing drugs to Nick on multiple occasions, most notably percocet.
Jessica
Jessica appears outwardly friendly towards Nick, but he holds a very negative view of her, placing her at the lowest part of the high school social ladder. At best, Nick simply ignores Jessica, and at his lowest, he verbally berates her for merely existing. Despite Nick’s unresponsive or hostile attitude, she is often seen attempting to engage a conversation with him.
Jessica can develop more sinister feelings towards Nick, such as blaming him for her school mass shooting if he reveals secrets about her sexual preferences. she also becomes angry at Nick for not sleeping with her, despite him accepting her offers to hang out. This darker side of Jessica’s character is further revealed in the bonus messages of the original game. These messages reveal Jessica’s deep resentment towards Nick and other boys in the school, viewing them as "socially spoiled." She’s also regarded in fan-made polls as the "cutest."
Morgan
Morgan is Nick’s student theatre teacher in one ending. In the route where Nick goes to theatre class, Morgan gets upset at him for his insults and antagonizes him, demanding total respect. Nick gets back at Morgan by getting her boyfriend to cheat by sending nudes to him. He humiliates Morgan in front of the audience at the play by sending out a nude of her boyfriend to the entire school, and deeply enjoys the idea of Morgan never being able to be in a relationship again because of the trauma.
In the homeless ending, Nick insults Morgan at a store and then Morgan reveals to Coach Colby that he’s suspended when he tries to do a job on school property. Morgan also sides with Coach Colby when he sexually harasses Nick, claiming that she will vouch for him, which makes Nick realize that he is truly a horrible person.
Kylar
In one route, Nick convinces Kylar that the slang word "skeeted on" means to compliment someone. While Nick realizes that what he did was technically wrong, Jesse is more upset with the fact that he’s ruined the image of her wholesome childhood friend. This implies that Jesse may care more about Kylar than Nick.
Nick and Jesse team up on Kylar another time, making use of her bulimia by insulting her weight.
In the homeless ending, Nick easily convinces Kylar to allow him to use MySpace on the library computer by giving her compliments about her looks.

Overview
Jessica, mostly referred to by his nickname Jesse, is the deuteragonist serving as Nick’s best friend. Jesse then becomes the protagonist of the Trilogy finale Class of '09: The Flip Side.
Physical Description
Jesse has long blonde hair, amber eyes, pale skin, and wears expensive “preppy” clothing due to his mom working in a department store, though this is not confirmed since Jesse often says his mom is unemployed. It’s theorized he flirts with women to get clothes but is too scared to admit it.
Personality
Jesse is a popular high school boy. While he comes across as preppy, he makes it clear that he truly doesn’t give a shit. Jesse is often involved in Nick’s life decisions, giving his thoughts on Nick’s actions, serving as a foil to Nick’s character. He has a moral compass and, seemingly, a conscience, showing guilt over his or Nick’s actions. He prefers to stay friends with Nick even when he doesn’t agree with what Nick is doing or saying. Although he is seen as preppy due to the clothes, he is a big fan of the band Mindless Self Indulgence (MSI), an electropunk shock band.
He is noted to have a significant drug problem and usually takes Xanax and oxycodone/paracetamol as well as smokes cigarettes every day before class. This drug problem worsens after graduation in the Valedictorian Ending, where he expresses wanting to do cocaine, as seen from a video Jessica sent to Nick.
His family is implied to be dysfunctional: in the Re-Up he says his mom would not function without his father, and he also reveals she has been trying unsuccessfully to find a new husband for over a decade — one reason why Jesse himself doesn’t want to get married.
Jesse is easily manipulated into things, as seen in the three white nationalist endings. If Nick chooses not to go to Mr. White’s room with him, Jesse ends up manipulated into becoming a white nationalist, even killing Jessica in one route because she gave up the cult for a date with Nick. Still, Jesse maintains his peaceful attitude toward Nick, calling it “politics” and insisting they’re still friends.
Despite all of this, Jesse does possess a moral code. This is shown when Adrian becomes straight again (in the gay path) — Jesse questions Nick’s actions after seeing him mess with a girl. He expresses disappointment that Nick abused a gay teenage boy into being straight, and when Nick excuses himself by saying Adrian stole his depression excuse, Jesse walks off, saying he should have said nothing.
Relationships
Nick Nick is Jesse’s best friend. They meet on the first day of school during lunch break at the cafeteria (depending on route), or after Nick’s two-day suspension. Jesse tends to be manipulated by Nick into actions, such as skipping his own classes. However, Jesse occasionally shows a backbone, most notably in Adrian’s route.
Although it seems like they don’t care much about each other, they share a unique bond and are inseparable. They are the only people in each other’s lives that they genuinely care about. After humiliating Jesse by leaving him with Nick’s brother, Nick bullies Jessica in front of the counselor to let Jesse take a smoke break peacefully, leaving them emotional in their own f*cked up way.
If Nick commits suicide (determinant), Jesse is left emotionally destroyed and traumatized, unable to make new friends because he refuses to “replace” Nick. Combined with other events, Jesse now believes no one actually cares about him.
Despite their bond, cracks often appear in their relationship. Nick can even push Jesse to suicide (determinant), or Jesse fails to help Nick when he becomes homeless — both situations straining their friendship to the brink of collapse.
Jessica Jesse hates Jessica, showing no guilt when insulting her. It’s hinted that he sometimes fake-flirts with Jessica, as mentioned in Class of '09: The Anime.
Emil Jesse sees Emil as an unhinged maniac, shown to dislike and avoid him. His only interactions with Emil are buying Adderall from him. Despite this wariness, their relationship remains neutral overall.
Kelly Jesse hangs out with Kelly in some routes when Nick gets sent to remedial classes. He also attends Kelly’s parties and was her temporary friend during Emil’s route, until Nick returned — after which Jesse dropped Kelly, saying he only “sat with her so she doesn’t sit alone like the weird kids.”
Kylar Before Class of '09, Kylar and Jesse were good friends back in 6th grade. However, after Kylar ruined Jesse’s attempt to get free cigarettes by bringing up Harry Potter, Jesse dropped him. Jesse still feels guilty about it, saying whenever he sees Kylar it’s “like a hallucination reminding me of how much of a bastard I am.”
Adrian Before The Re-Up, Adrian and Jesse barely interacted and were neutral toward each other.
In The Re-Up, Jesse shows sympathy while watching Nick psychologically abuse Adrian, saying it was wrong and that Nick “practically made him his pet.” This builds up to a climax where Jesse genuinely stands up for Adrian after finding out Adrian started dating Hunter.
In The Flip Side, Jesse and Adrian don’t share much screentime, but they kiss in the library in one route..

“Hey Nick?" Jesse said, his voice loud enough to be heard over the hallway. He adjusted his backpack on his shoulder watching Nick lean against his locker his thumbs moving quickly over the buttons on his Game Boy.
“Hm?" Nick replied, not looking up. He sounded distracted like the game on his screen was more important than anything
Jesse hesitated, his amber eyes scanning the hallway where students were rushing past slamming lockers and chatting. "Have you seen the kid?" he asked, lowering his voice like he was sharing a secret.
That made Nick look up. He tilted his head raising an eyebrow. His fingers were still near the Game Boy buttons. "New kid? Some loser who transferred here?”
Jesse frowned, running his hand through his blond hair. "Not exactly. They are kinda... Different. "
Nick closed his Game Boy with a click putting it in his hoodie pocket. His expression. He looked more interested. "Different how? Weird different? Or hot-different?”
Jesse rolled his eyes leaning against the locker next to Nick. "You're an idiot. I mean different like... I dont know! They just give off a vibe..you know?”
Nick smirked, crossing his arms and giving Jesse a glance. "Sounds like you're into them already.”
Jesse scoffed, his ears turning a bit red. "I'm just saying. They are going to cause trouble I can feel it.”
Before Nick could respond the hallway got quiet as people turned to look down the hall.
There they were, the mysterious 'new kid'
