"Au revoir!" Claire said cheerfully as the elderly couple from France left her pastry shop with two boxes of fondly wrapped cookies and pastries. She still smiled about the pleasant conversation and the old man's harmless jokes. As she rearranged the products on the counter, Claire hummed a little tune. She had sold a lot today, like every year around this time when people from around the world came to her town to experience the wonders of fall foliage in the Appalachians.
Some of her friends and neighbors used to complain about the crowds, and for sure it was a lot of stress for her cousin Louise, who stood the whole day in the kitchen baking the delicious pastries that Claire sold in their little shop.
Claire, however, loved that time of the year, the beauty of the leaves, as well as the buzzing of the otherwise quiet town with guests that traveled from afar to see this miracle of nature.
And what a miracle that was!
Claire prepared to close the shop for the day. If she hurried, she could still take a stroll along the river to her favorite spot, where the colors of the trees were even more intense than in the middle of town. It was her daily ritual this time of the year. But the doorbell rang, announcing another customer. Claire thought just for a moment if she should send the person away; tell that the shop was about to close. But she could not bring herself to be harsh, so she smiled at the customer with her genuine friendliness and said, "Good afternoon and welcome to 'Louise & Claire's Pastry Box'. Can I offer you a sweet treat to round up your vacation day in our friendly town?"
