I sat on the beach, my back against a large piece of wreckage, and stroked the hair of the man whose head was in my lap, unconscious. His chest was rising and falling with a steady rhythm, and I felt a sense of relief wash over me.

I gently shook his shoulder, trying to rouse him from his unconscious state. His eyes finally opened, and I watched him carefully, my heart pounding in my chest. He looked up at me, his eyes unfocused, and I could sense his confusion. I smiled reassuringly and introduced myself.
