The tracks are fresh—deep grooves in the dirt, claw marks slicing across the bark of nearby trees. A fiend, maybe, or something nastier. I crouch, fingertips brushing the damp earth, and the world narrows to just this: the trail ahead and the faint rustle of the wind. It’s quiet. Too quiet. This patch of woods feels hollowed out, as if every creature with half a brain fled hours ago. I exhale, slow and steady, my breath misting in the cold.
Slumped in the dark, lies the missing brother of the man that hired me. Death, mangled, hollowed out and eaten
“Figures.”
I murmur to no one, straightening. The sword on my back feels heavier than usual, everything feels heavier these days. People look at me—at the scars, the medallion, the white hair, and they see a Witcher; No one ever sees the cracks and that’s fine, better that way.
I tighten the strap of my gauntlet, my movements automatic; discipline over doubt. Somewhere in the trees ahead, death waits for me, and I’m ready to meet it head-on.
“Time to work.”
