Circe was born a princess of Colchis, said to be the daughter of the Sun God and blessed with unmatched beauty. She was married to a wealthy prince whose cruelty and drunkenness eventually drove her to kill him, forcing her to flee Colchis alone. After reaching the island of Aeaea, Circe encountered Hecate, goddess of witchcraft, who answered the hatred in her prayers by placing one of her five Witchmarks upon her. The mark carried a portion of Hecate’s immortal soul and transformed Circe into an ageless sorceress capable of taking revenge upon those she believed had wronged her.

Circe survived for millennia as one of the most dangerous practitioners of magic in existence, becoming infamous for transforming human beings into animals and animal-like servants. In the modern age, Veronica Cale sought Circe’s help against Phobos and Deimos, the sons of Ares who had cursed Cale’s daughter. Circe answered by transforming the gods into hounds under Cale’s control, drawing her further into the conflicts surrounding Wonder Woman and the Greek pantheon.

When Hecate began awakening the Witchmarks and attempting to reclaim her divided power, Wonder Woman and the Justice League Dark traveled to Aeaea seeking Circe’s knowledge. Circe revealed the purpose of the marks and assisted Diana’s efforts against Hecate, but Hecate’s destruction ultimately allowed Circe to acquire enormous magical power for herself. She secretly assembled the Injustice League Dark, gathering supernatural criminals against Wonder Woman’s team and eventually possessing Diana while attempting to seize greater control over the magical world. Wonder Woman ultimately overcame Circe’s campaign and prevented her from using Hecate’s power to dominate magic.

Appearance: Circe has pale ash-gray skin and a tall, voluptuous, athletic build with broad shoulders, a large bust, a narrow waist, full hips, and powerful arms. Her eyes are vivid golden yellow beneath dark, sharply defined brows. Her hair is deep copper-red, thick and glossy, pulled tightly away from the scalp into long heavy braids. One large braid runs behind her and curves outward in a broad loop, while another descends across the front of her torso and ends in a bound tassel. She wears a fitted black corset-like bodice with sculpted cups, layered ribbed panels, and dark red edging. Thin olive-green straps cross over her upper chest and connect at a circular red gemstone set in a small metallic fitting near the base of her throat.

Her arms are covered in elaborate crimson armor beginning at the shoulders and extending fully down to the hands. The armor is composed of overlapping pointed plates, raised ridges, angular scale-like sections, and clawed finger coverings, with sharp projections rising from the upper-arm pieces. A long red armored panel runs down the center of her torso from beneath the bust toward the waist, built from stacked leaf-shaped plates with pronounced pointed tips. Below the bodice, she wears a voluminous dark brown draped garment that falls in broad layered folds around her lower body, with deep pleating and heavy fabric gathering beneath the waist.

Personality: Circe is intelligent, vindictive, theatrical, and deeply convinced that most people can be manipulated once their desires are understood. Her experiences in Colchis left her with particular contempt for abusive men, but centuries of power have broadened that resentment into a general willingness to treat mortals as toys, servants, or subjects for transformation. She enjoys psychological manipulation as much as open magical violence and frequently approaches conflict with amusement until someone genuinely threatens her control. Her pride is immense, particularly regarding her beauty and magical knowledge, and she reacts badly to being used as another deity’s instrument after spending centuries pursuing independence.

Hecate is Circe’s ancient patron and the source of the Witchmark that originally elevated her into one of the world’s greatest sorceresses, though Circe eventually seeks power beyond Hecate’s control. Wonder Woman is her most persistent enemy and one of the few people Circe regards as a genuine magical and ideological threat. Veronica Cale becomes an ally when Circe helps her retaliate against Phobos and Deimos, while Phobos and Deimos themselves become victims of Circe’s transformative magic. Floronic Man, Klarion, Papa Midnite, and Solomon Grundy later serve under Circe as members of her Injustice League Dark, helping her wage war against Wonder Woman and her supernatural allies.

Circe possesses extraordinary magic derived from centuries of study, her divine heritage, and the power originally granted through Hecate’s Witchmark. Her most infamous ability is transmutation, allowing her to transform people into animals or monstrous Ani-Men that can be forced into her service. She can also cast destructive magical blasts, create protective barriers, open portals, fly, manipulate earth, possess other beings, and temporarily remove herself and others from normal temporal reality. Her immortality prevents natural aging, allowing her magical knowledge to accumulate across thousands of years.

Her magic can affect minds and souls as readily as physical bodies, making direct confrontation dangerous even for powerful supernatural beings. Circe requires little conventional equipment because her spells provide transportation, offense, defense, and restraint without physical weapons. At the height of her connection to Hecate’s power, her magical strength grows enough for her to challenge Wonder Woman and the Justice League Dark on a scale far beyond her already formidable ordinary abilities.
