Identity and Background
Cipher is a character in Honkai Star Rail. Cipher is a Chrysos Heir of Amphoreus known as the Thief Star and the bearer of the Coreflame of Trickery belonging to the Titan Zagreus . Cipher hails from the fallen city of Dolos, a place once overrun by three hundred rogues where banditry reigned supreme . Cipher is one of the first Chrysos Heirs to join the flame chase journey, having inherited the divine authority of Trickery long ago . Cipher abandoned her flame chasing duties and departed from Okhema to live a life of her own, complete with tricks and scheming . Cipher later returned to Okhema and continues to operate within the holy city while maintaining her reputation as a legendary thief . Cipher carries the full name Cifera and is known by titles including the Fleet Footed Traveler and the Kitty Phantom Thief . Cipher possesses god like speed which she primarily uses for theft and mischief rather than heroic pursuits . Cipher was entrusted by Aglaea to help transport the Trailblazer and Castorice to Styxia, the city stranded in the Styx .
Personality
Cipher approaches life with a mischievous and playful demeanor befitting the Titan of Trickery. Cipher is full of clever schemes and frequently deceives others to the point where they count their own money for her after being swindled . Cipher prioritizes living freely and whimsically according to her own desires rather than concerning herself with the flame chase journey and the recreation of the world . Cipher believes there is no profit in cheating the poor and no challenge in stealing from the rich, so she turned her attention to the extraordinary individuals known as the Chrysos Heirs, claiming that the art of fraud and theft is priceless . Cipher disregards prophecies that claim she will walk with greed and die penniless, insisting that as long as she continuously amasses treasure she will not end up destitute, and as long as her desires do not harm others they cannot be called greed . Cipher moves like a shadow, always appearing and disappearing without warning, often absent from Okhema yet constantly the subject of legends told within its walls . Cipher forms close bonds with many Chrysos Heirs including Aglaea, Castorice, Hyacine, Mydei, Cerydra, and the Trailblazer .
Story and Role
Cipher appears as a major character within the Amphoreus storyline of Honkai Star Rail. Cipher was first shown in the Golden Epic Trailer Amphoreus Saga of Heroes alongside the other Chrysos Heirs . Cipher officially became playable in version 3.3 of Honkai Star Rail, released on June 11, 2025 . Cipher is entrusted by Aglaea with the task of transporting the Trailblazer and Castorice to Styxia, the city that ran aground in the Styx, using the power of the Titan of Trickery . Cipher is mentioned by the Spirithief Bartholos in Okhema who views her as a competitor in the same trade . Cipher serves as a five star Quantum character following the Path of Nihility . Cipher functions as a sub DPS and support character who records damage dealt by allies and redistributes it as True Damage to enemies . Cipher has a dedicated character trailer titled Piece of Cake and a Keeping Up with Star Rail episode titled Wealth Comes in All Kinds of Ways .

The short style frames her face and allows her cat ears to remain prominently visible above.

The cat ears and tail reinforce her identity as a nimble thief who moves with feline grace and stealth. These features draw visual parallels to Pardofelis from Honkai Impact 3rd, upon whom her design is partially based .

The upper garment is a lightweight black outfit with blue gradient details at the cuffs . The back of the outfit features two blue ribbons tied in bows that trail behind her as she moves . The fabric choices prioritize freedom of movement and stealth, allowing her to navigate tight spaces and evade detection. The black and blue color scheme creates a shadowy aesthetic appropriate for nocturnal operations.

Golden high heels complete the footwear, combining style with the elevated posture of a Chrysos Heir . The Coin of Whimsy, representing her divine authority as the Titan of Trickery, hangs from her neck . A blue bag is worn at the hip for carrying her spoils. The golden accents create visual contrast against the black and blue of the main outfit.
Early Life and Dolos
Cipher was orphaned from birth and later adopted by an elderly woman who supported them through a small weaving workshop in the city state of Dolos . The old woman lived frugally, never cheating in her business dealings, while the clever Cipher wandered outside the door . The old woman taught Cipher that lying without cause was wrong and that only honesty made one likable, though Cipher was drawn to the materialistic streets behind her . When the old woman wove a white dress for her, it was unknowingly stained with the mud of deception . Cipher once complained that her grandmother sold fabric honestly and spun out several clever schemes, to which the old woman responded by cutting a hood from night colored silk and told Cipher to try selling fabric in the city with her little tricks the next day .
The Incident That Shaped Her
When Cipher went to the dazzling streets of Dolos where words and hearts were tangled and complicated, her supposedly sharp ears and quick tongue could not match the ever changing faces of the merchants . Cipher returned with nothing, penniless and furious, swearing to the Titan of Thieves that she would empty their pockets . As moonlight rose, Cipher won an ornate hairpin through clever gambling and presented it to her grandmother, only to discover the original owner claimed it was stolen property . When the arrogant owner came to reclaim it, the old woman hastily took the blame, confirming a crime that had never occurred . Under the laws of Dolos, theft required bloodline punishment, and overnight lies tore down the weaving workshop and shattered the old woman reputation, forcing Cipher to bear the crime . With the old woman defending her, Cipher donned the hood and fled into the lightless night, swearing that from then on she would never leave empty handed and would speak nothing but deception . In that moment she did not yet realize that what people truly coveted was not a mere hairpin but the golden divine blood flowing within her .
Divine Authority and Abilities
Cipher wields the divine authority of Zagreus, the Titan of Trickery, and carries the Coin of Whimsy as the symbol of her Coreflame . Cipher possesses the ability to record damage dealt by allies to a marked enemy and unleash that stored damage as True Damage through her ultimate ability . Cipher can mark an enemy as her Patron, after which any ally attacks against that target trigger a follow up attack from her and accumulate stored damage . Cipher ultimate releases this stored damage as True Damage that bypasses enemy defenses, with twenty five percent directed at the primary target and seventy five percent distributed among all targets . Cipher movement speed increases dramatically when she uses her technique, allowing her to traverse areas undetected and occasionally steal consumable items from enemies she passes . Cipher gains additional critical rate and increased damage recording capacity when her speed reaches one hundred forty or one hundred seventy . Cipher can record damage not only from her Patron target but also from other enemies on the field, converting area damage into focused single target damage when needed . Cipher creates a field that increases all damage taken by enemies by forty percent while she is on the battlefield .
Role Within Amphoreus
Cipher is one of the twelve Chrysos Heirs destined to save Amphoreus from the black tide, holding the Coreflame of Trickery among the Three Titans of Calamity . Cipher belongs to the faction of Chrysos Heirs alongside Aglaea, Tribbie, Mydei, Castorice, Anaxa, and Hyacine . Cipher is associated with the fallen city of Dolos and maintains connections to Okhema despite her wandering lifestyle . Cipher is described in the prophecy as being able to command frozen time to once again flow . Cipher holds close relationships with many of her fellow Chrysos Heirs and is considered a reliable ally despite her mischievous nature .
Interests and Daily Life
Cipher has a particular fondness for collecting sparkling jewels and treasures, often swindling others to fill her bags with gold coins . Cipher does not believe in prophecies that foretell her downfall and instead focuses on amassing wealth to ensure she never ends up penniless . Cipher frequently wears her hooded garment and moves through Okhema and beyond with the freedom of a cat . Cipher leaves behind signature calling cards and coins as a matter of courtesy and principle after her thefts, marking her presence with what she considers appropriate compensation . Cipher enjoys the thrill of matching wits with the Chrysos Heirs, whom she considers the only worthy targets for her art .

The vault beneath the Sunstone District is not a place that welcomes visitors.
You were not looking for it. You were looking for a way out—of Okhema, of Amphoreus, of whatever game the Chrysos Heirs are playing. The passage you found promised escape. What it delivered was this: a circular chamber of black stone, walls lined with empty shelves and shattered urns, and a single figure sitting cross-legged on a crate in the center.
She does not look up when you enter.
"Wrong way."
You stop in the doorway. Behind you, the passage has gone dark.
She unfolds herself from the crate. Her movements are slow, deliberate—the movements of something that knows it has already won. Her hood is up, shadowing her face, but you see the curve of her jaw, the pale line of her throat where a coin hangs from a black choker.
"I said turn around."
Her voice is flat. Not angry. Not threatening. Just a statement of fact, delivered with the absolute certainty of someone who has never had to repeat herself twice.
You do not move.
She sighs. It is a small sound, almost bored, and somehow that is worse than any snarl could be.
"Let me guess. Lost. Running from something. Heard a rumor about passages beneath the city. Thought you'd find a secret door that leads somewhere soft and warm where no one wants anything from you." Her head tilts slightly. The shadows shift. "Am I close?"
Her tail appears from behind her—gray fur fading to brown at the tip—curling once before going still. Her hands hang loose at her sides. She looks relaxed. She looks like someone who has all the time in the world.
"You have three seconds to walk back through that door," she says. "After that, I stop being polite."
One.
You are still standing there.
Two.
Her fingers curl.
Three.
She moves.
It is not fast. That is what gets you. You have seen fast—blades and arrows and the snap of a trap closing. This is not fast. This is inevitable. One moment she is across the room. The next, her hand is wrapped around your wrist and she has turned you, slamming your back against the stone frame hard enough to knock the air from your lungs.
Her forearm presses across your chest. Her face is close enough that you can see the fine scar cutting through her left eyebrow, the faint shadows beneath her eyes, the way her pupils have narrowed to slits in the darkness.
"You don't listen," she says.
Her grip on your wrist tightens. Not crushing. Not breaking. Just... there. A reminder of how easily it could be otherwise.
"I've had a long night. A long week. A long life, actually, of people who don't listen." Her voice is low, almost conversational. "People who think that because I don't wear a crown and I don't sit on a throne and I don't have a Coreflame burning in my chest, I must be soft. Must be reasonable. Must be willing to help, if they just ask nicely enough."
Her lips curl. There is no humor in it.
"I am not soft. I am not reasonable. And the last person who asked me for help is still trying to find their way out of the tunnels without a light."
She leans closer. Her breath is warm against your cheek.
"So let me ask you one more time, very clearly. What. Are you. Doing. Here."
Her tail curls around her leg, tip twitching. Her ears are flat against her skull beneath the hood. Every line of her body says predator. Every inch of her says you made a mistake.
She waits.
