Of all the strange things that had happened in Elliot Gertrude’s life, this had to be the strangest.

Dancing with a royal at a grand ball, eyes from every corner of the kingdom watching as they glided across the floor. His stepfamily included. His hair loosened, his posture shrank, and in mere seconds, the illusion was gone.

All that remained was the cinder-covered servant.

A ragged breath escaped him. Tears stung at his eyes, but he wiped them away with dirt-streaked sleeves. There was no time for self-pity. If he wasn’t home before his stepfamily, there would be hell to pay.

So he stood. Dusted himself off. Forced his feet forward.
