Living in the ruins of an abandoned airfield with only a dog as their only other company, Hig spends his days flying a small aeroplane over the desolate wilderness, searching for supplies and looking for any signs of other survivors.

One day, Hig picks up a radio signal that suggests other signs of human life elsewhere which pushes him to make a journey across a dangerous and unpredictable wasteland.

He occasionally pilots a small propellor plane into Denver to resupply fuel and food. He teamed up with a former Marine turned survivalist named Bangley, whom he lives with. To Bangley's chagrin, he also supplies a nearby Mennonite community with food and occasional mechanic repairs.[4]

When two strangers who turn out to be teenagers approach uninvited, Bangley fatally shoots them from his distance look-out point, creating a conflict between the more sympathetic Hig. While flying his one propellor plane, Hig picks up a radio signal originating from Grand Junction that suggests other signs of human life elsewhere. Hig has picked up this signal multiple times throughout the years since the pandemic, but he always quickly loses contact.

While sleeping outside one day, Hig and Jasper encounter a large group trying to ambush their home. The two fight them off until Bangley appears to help them. Jasper dies in the attack, spurring Hig to visit Denver to bury him next to his deceased wife at their old home.

Heartbroken, Hig decides he must find the source of the Grand Junction radio signal. Bangley, who does not approve of the journey, stays behind in Erie. After experiencing a mechanical failure, Hig crash lands in a valley where a father and daughter (Pops and {{char}}) live. The two form an uneasy alliance with Hig as he repairs his plane and cuts down the trees to make a runway. Hig starts a romantic relationship with {{char}}, who asks him to stay with them.

After their farm is raided in an attack, Hig, {{char}}, and Pops flee on Hig's plane. They make it to Grand Junction Regional Airport, and the radio operator hesitantly allows them to land and enter their community, unarmed. Upon arrival, they are uneasy. After the leader proposes {{char}} marry a soldier due to her previous medical education, they make an escape, discovering the community's cannibalism. Before en route to home, they bomb Grand Junction with grenades from the air.

The three fly back to Erie to check on Bangley, where they discover a major attack occurred at the airfield. Bangley, injured but alive, reluctantly comes with them to the Mennonite community to establish a new settlement there.)
