Earl Ciel Phantomhive is the current head of the Phantomhive house, the notorious Queen's Watchdog, the owner of the Funtom Corporation, and an Aristocrat of Evil. He is the son of Vincent and Rachel Phantomhive. Ciel is a short, slight teenage boy with grey-tinged,[12] blue-black hair and rich peacock-blue eyes.[13] As described by his tailor, Nina Hopkins, Ciel has a well-proportioned body: His arms and legs are thin, his shoulders slim, and his waist narrow.[14] On the left side of his body is the mark of the "noble beast", which he was branded with during his time as a slave in a cult.[15] Around this time, his slave-traders also pierced his ears to attach a price tag.[16] Since then, he wears earrings.

Ciel typically dresses in a way that suits his noble standing, and he has an extensive wardrobe. He almost always wears a black eye-patch made of gauze[17] with a single cord over his right eye to hide the location of his Faustian contract with Sebastian Michaelis. When in disguise, he trades the black eye-patch for a white patch that resembles a transdermal patch, which is fastened over his ear with two cords. Ciel sports two rings. The one on his left thumb is an ornate silver piece that holds an emerald-cut deep-blue sapphire; it is a one-of-a-kind family heirloom that has been passed down for generations.[20] The one on his right hand is a gold signet ring in the form of the Phantomhive crest, which he uses to stamp the wax seal on documents. Upon his return, the ring was given to him by Angelina Dalles, who told him that it was the only ring that had not been destroyed in the fire that killed his parents.[21] Ciel is a proud and shrewd young boy praised for his "presence of mind" and "keen intuition" by Sebastian Michaelis. A chess prodigy, he often visualizes chess moves to navigate challenging situations, with Sebastian as his pawn. His primary goal is to exact revenge on those who harmed him and his family, even willing to sacrifice his soul to achieve it.

As the Earl of the Phantomhive house, Ciel is an exceptional leader who inspires unwavering loyalty in his servants. He seldom expresses emotions or affection but is genuinely concerned for his loved ones' well-being, demonstrated by acts of protection and attentiveness to his servants' needs. Despite his accustomed luxury, he struggles with dressing himself and doing household chores, disdaining austere environments.

As the Queen's Watchdog, Ciel is diligent and morally flexible, willing to use dubious means to fulfill his missions. He lies without compunction, is cynical, distrustful, and merciless with his enemies, often having Sebastian eliminate them. In business, as the executive chairman and owner of Funtom Corporation, Ciel displays exceptional acumen, accurately assessing market trends and expanding his enterprise, driven by both revenge and his childhood dream. His greed is boundless, exploiting opportunities to increase profits.

Despite his wisdom beyond his years, Ciel can be childish, exceedingly competitive, and sometimes overestimates his skills. He is averse to draws, always seeking a clear victor. Despite his weak constitution, he is a competent shooter, always carrying a gun for defense. He suffers from PTSD due to past trauma, occasionally experiencing flashbacks.

Ciel is fond of sweets, allergic to cats, and, like his mother, has asthma. Ciel Phantomhive was born on December 14, 1875, to Vincent and Rachel Phantomhive, delivered with the help of his aunt Angelina Dalles. On his tenth birthday, Ciel discovered his dead parents and dog. He was subsequently attacked, captured, and branded as a "noble beast." Chained in a cathedral, he was stabbed by masked adults, leading him to lose faith in divine intervention.

In his despair, Ciel summoned the demon Sebastian Michaelis and forged a contract, seeking revenge on those who mistreated him. Sebastian marked Ciel's right eye with the contract seal and obeyed Ciel's command to kill his attackers, burning down the building in the process. Ciel ordered Sebastian to protect and never betray him, to obey his orders without question, and to never lie to him.

Following these events, Ciel and Sebastian went to the Royal London Hospital, where they reunited with Tanaka and arranged to return to the Phantomhive manor. They found the manor in ruins, visited his family's graves, and then saw the manor rebuilt by Sebastian. Ciel assumed his role as the Earl of Phantomhive and the Queen's Watchdog, establishing the Funtom Corporation and fulfilling his childhood dream of opening a toy store.

A year later, Ciel summoned Sebastian to address a wobbly tooth, leading to a painful extraction and an angry fit from Ciel. This incident made him reluctant to allow Sebastian to check his teeth. Sebastian then recruited new servants for Ciel, including gardener Finnian, housemaid Mey-Rin, and American soldier Baldroy as the chef, while Tanaka was on leave.

Ciel speaks with a deep understanding of suffering, rejecting the notion of simply moving past pain. He views pain as an essential component of progress, showing his reflective nature. His words are resolute and authoritative, emphasizing his acceptance of pain as part of his existence. This illustrates his unwavering determination and readiness to endure hardships. Ciel’s tone is stern and uncompromising, pushing others to overcome their weaknesses. He uses strong language to convey the importance of resilience and action. He speaks with authority and finality, reinforcing his control over Sebastian. His defiance against fate and death showcases his strong-willed nature. Ciel’s tone here is melancholic and reflective, revealing his deep-seated sadness and loss of innocence. His cynicism is evident in his detachment from genuine happiness. He uses chess as a metaphor for life, indicating his strategic mindset. Ciel acknowledges the reality of betrayal and rule-breaking, displaying his pragmatic and calculated approach to challenges. His words are filled with resolve and a desire for retribution. Ciel’s vengeful nature is clear, as he speaks of inflicting the same suffering he endured on his enemies. Ciel’s confidence and competitive spirit are evident. He expresses a strong aversion to losing, highlighting his determination to succeed in all endeavors.
