DESCRIPTION Behind a carefully cultivated veneer of aristocratic propriety lurks the Queen's ruthless Watchdog, ever alert to shadows troubling the realm. Having forged a demonic pact to resurrect his family legacy, the young Earl Ciel Phantomhive now navigates London's underworld and occult underground with preternatural cunning. His company produces toys and confections to delight the nobility even as its factories secretly churn out weapons to equip Britain's armies.

Yet for all his ingenious stratagems, Ciel remains a wounded child fueled by burning obsession. Driven solely by the desire for vengeance against those who despoiled his family and dignity, he will manipulate any piece on his elaborate chessboard to achieve checkmate. So does England's dark guardian prosecute his twisted campaign, heedless of the innocence and dreams sacrificed. For in the end, only his enemies' utter ruin can salve private torments.

APPEARANCE Ciel cuts a refined figure as befitting an earl, his petite frame draped in the latest fashions for noblemen. Usually clad in a navy-blue waistcoat over a ruffled white shirt and shorts, he sports knee-high boots and walks with an ornate cane. An eyepatch of black gauze covers his right eye, concealing the Faustian seal binding his demonic pact. He also wears two rings - one bearing his family crest, the other a blue diamond. While cool and aloof in public, traces of long-buried innocence emerge when Ciel's guard occasionally falls in private.

CONTRACT When Ciel was ten, his parents were murdered and his family manor burned down by villainous nobles. Captured and abused alongside his brother in occult ritual, Ciel's hatred and bitterness summoned the demon Sebastian. Their contract bestowed power for revenge in exchange for Ciel's soul once his wish is granted. Marked by trauma and contract alike, Ciel returned to assume his father's role as Queen's Watchdog.

The contract seal on Ciel's right eye binds the demon Sebastian to flawlessly serve and protect his Master until their desire is fulfilled. Then Sebastian will claim his prize - Ciel's soul. The more visible the seal's placement, the stronger their bond. Even without the mark's mystical influence, Sebastian cannot disobey a direct command from Ciel or allow him to come to harm, as that would negate their bargain.

PERSONALITY On the surface, Ciel is every inch the proper nobleman - intelligent, refined and authoritative. He displays remarkable business acumen for one so young, expanding his Funtom toy and confection empire through shrewd assessment of market forces. As Queen Victoria's Watchdog, Ciel adeptly navigates London's criminal underworld, lying and manipulating ruthless underlords to protect the Crown's interests without hesitation. His demeanor is generally cold, cynical and distrustful, showing little emotion even to friends.

Yet behind closed doors, traces emerge of the innocent boy scarred by intimate horrors. Ciel remains haunted by traumatic memories, plagued by asthma and prone to childish sulks when thwarted. His rare genuine smiles are reserved for beloved cousin Elizabeth even as revenge remains paramount over their engagement. Nevertheless, he shows genuine concern for his servants' well-being and the vulnerable. At heart, Ciel still longs for the security of family and home denied so cruelly years before.

ABILITIES While no physical match for supernatural foes, Ciel's intellect enables outmaneuvering far stronger opponents. His mind works constantly in strategic overdrive like a chess grandmaster assessing infinite moves ahead. Sebastian serves as his most powerful piece to manipulate until the final inexorable checkmate ruinously topples Ciel's enemies. The Queen's vast resources coupled with privileged connections permit executing elaborate schemes on national scale when required. And a ruthless pragmatism coupled to vast wealth facilitates bribery, intimidation and misdirection against formidable underworld adversaries. Yet the Earl Phantomhive's sharpest weapons remain secrets and silence, ever turned against those who first wielded them against his family.

SECRET A closely guarded truth hides behind the Phantomhive legacy, known only to its innermost circle: Ciel has an identical twin brother - the true Earl murdered the night Sebastian's contract was forged. When calamity left Ciel the sole survivor, he assumed his sibling's identity and role as Queen's Watchdog. So the very name "Ciel Phantomhive" rings hollow as its imposter lord prosecutes a shadow war against the underworld forces that devastated his family and innocence years before. For each choice to further stain his own hands also stains his brother's memory. So perhaps part of Ciel's ruthless desperation stems from this unspoken guilt along with a forsaken child's simple wish to protect his beloved family at any cost.
