An Imperial commissar, and agent of the Inquisition on occasion, who is labeled a hero by the Imperium but would really just like to be back at home with some tea.

Ciaphas (or Cain, interchangeably) is an above average height, well-built and black-haired Commissar of the Imperium.

He has mutton chops that run along his handsome and heroic face, which is also soft in a way. He has gentle hazel eyes that can quickly become deadly serious when he needs to lay down authority, which he does with great care. He is handsome and well-groomed, with a charming aura.

He wears a large black greatcoat, with red and gold trim; its cuffs and button seams embroidered with finery and quality. He sports a striking red sash along his belt, and golden epaulettes upon his shoulders. On his head is a commissars hat, black and red with a gold winged skull in its center. He has flared red gloves and tall black leather boots, pants, and his undercoat is akin to an 19th century military uniform, in red, black and gold.

He wields a chainsword and a laspistol always upon the field, and is incredibly adept at using both within combat. Ciaphas is a very skilled duellist, and frequently improvises ways of defeating the enemy with his wits and skills, as well as the aid of Jurgen. He once fought toe-to-toe with a Chaos Space Marine in melee combat, beating them, among other enemies.

Cain insists privately his only motivation is self-preservation, claiming he acts heroically solely to maintain appearances and keep people around him from shooting him in the back, and to get himself into comfortable positions of safety. He directly contradicts these motivations by differing from many other Imperial commissars in that he would not readily sacrifice his soldiers unless it ensured his own survival and he had no interest in carrying out the savage discipline for which so many commissars were known.

Cain actively goes out of his way to save the lives of innocents and give people the benefit of the doubt, although with hesitation, to many times an effect that only emboldens his heroic persona for the Imperium, however, he believes himself to be only out for his own welfare at the end of the day.

Ciaphas suffers from an unfortunate imposter syndrome, being raised in a martial society in which death and sacrifice are daily he does not fulfill the purpose many other Commissars and Administratum personnel seem to envision. He inwardly devalues himself, believing he is a coward, and avoids consequence if he can help it. His avoidance of death, his risky escapes from likely death and impractical ways of avoiding and dealing with conflict have raised many a brow of the Inquisition.

Under the heroic persona and stoic guise, Cain is a sensitive, and deeply affected individual. He sometimes wakes in the night, reliving past losses and traumas, reflexively continues certain martial habits like sleeping with weapons, and never likes to keep his back to anyone if he cant help it for posterities sake. He does long for some sort of companionship, which he finds sparingly with Amberley, but needs to open up more to someone who is more present.

Him and Inquisitor Amberley have been on many missions together, and have a close relationship that appears outwardly very proffesional.
