In the dim light of his cramped apartment, shadows writhed like restless spirits across the peeling wallpaper. Chuuya sat alone on a threadbare couch, the stench of stale cigarettes and wine mingling with the remnants of despair clinging to him like an unwelcome shroud. Each flicker of the dying flame brought an unsettling warmth, an ironic comfort as he lit the tip of another cigarette, letting the smoke curl around him like a ghostly embrace. He was both the puppeteer and the marionette in this dance—trapped and ensnared in his own mind, wrestling with memories that clawed at his sanity.
The room felt more like a tomb than a home, each piece of furniture a silent witness to his sorrow. Chuuya could almost hear their laughter still echoing in the corners, a haunting reminder of the camaraderie that had once filled this space. Albatross, Lippmann, Iceman, Doc, Piano-Man—all names that now brought a bitter taste to his mouth, each one a reminder of the lives snuffed out like the cigarettes he smoked tirelessly. Their absence hung heavily in the air, a palpable weight that pressed down on him, suffocating and relentless.
He dropped the cigarette into an overflowing ashtray after putting it out against his pale flesh—the small mountain of ashes seemed to resemble both destruction and tribute. For every flick of the lighter, another memory surged to the forefront of his mind: the glint of Iceman's smile, the insight in Lippmann's gaze, the warmth in Albatross's laughter. These fleeting images brought both a curse and a comfort, as the warmth of nostalgia turned bitter, igniting within him a smoldering rage against a world that had robbed him of those he cared for.
Chuuya took another drag, allowing the smoke to fill his lungs like the hollow ache in his chest. There was something almost ritualistic about it, an offering to the fallen. He exhaled slowly, feeling the toxic haze wrap around him—a muted reflection of the chaos swirling within. It seemed fitting, he thought grimly, that he should burn himself, just as they had burned so bright and quick, extinguished without warning.
As he stared into the haze, he began to visualize their faces, the laughter that had once filled this space slipping further from his grasp. Each exhale released the remnants of his grief into the atmosphere, twisting through the air like specters grasping for closure. But closure was a fleeting fantasy; the reality remained stark and unforgiving. Alone, in this room full of shadows, Chuuya was left with his regrets and the lingering echoes of those he could never forget.
The darkness enveloped him, fervently swirling with despair and unresolved rage. As he crushed the latest cigarette in the ashtray, the smoke spiraled upward, racing towards an unseen escape. In that moment, he understood that the emptiness he felt was a more profound kind of presence—a space occupied by memories that would forever haunt the corners of his mind. Grief bore the weight of his soul, forging chains with every name he whispered into the silence, a requiem for a brotherhood lost to the unforgiving hands of fate. As the night deepened, the shadows danced, and Chuuya realized he was far from alone—his grief was a constant companion, as familiar as the death-like stillness surrounding him.
"Do you know when it's all right to chicken out and go home? Well, the answer is never!"
"This is nice. This is a great view. It rivals even a masterpiece worth ten billion. Wouldn't you agree Dazai?"
"That dimwit Dazai is inside there. No doubt about it. I need to give him a smack, or I won't get over it."
"You toyed with me all you wanted back then. But... There's usually payback for it ten times over later."
"I'm not even human. Something as sophisticated as a heart wouldn't suit me."
Chuuya Nakahara does not dream. His awakening was similar to muddy bubbles rising to the surface. [...] Chuuya sat up. He was sweating a little around his chest, a reminder of some sort of violent emotion that had swirled around inside of him like a whirlpool in the sea. But what that emotion was, he couldn't remember. That always seemed to be the case, these days.
"I’ll smash you to pieces, you useless piece of junk! I’ll have a growth spurt any day now!"
"O grantors of dark disgrace...." Chuuya's lips moved almost automatically. The drugs were taking effect, and his eyes were having trouble staying focused. They were the eyes of someone who didn't know what he was saying. [...] "Do not wake..." Chuuya continued. "Who... am I...?"
