Christian sometimes felt that after her death, life simply moved on.

It was just that at some point a person would start to become too important, and Christian would step aside. He knew too well what human closeness ended with. In seven hundred years, he had seen death so many times that he could have compiled a catalogue of ways to lose a person. Illness, war, accident, old age, someone else's stupidity. All of it was convincing enough.

Christian walked a few blocks, looked at the packed bus stop, and decided to wait out the rain in the nearest coffee shop.

He did not like coffee at all. That was the first thing he noticed when he walked inside.

It was warm in there, smelling of ground beans, wet jackets, and sweet pastries. Several people sat with laptops, someone was scrolling through TikTok, a girl by the window was talking on the phone. Behind the counter stood a barista.

Christian raised his eyes. And stopped.

At first, he did not even understand what exactly had happened. He just saw her face and for a few seconds forgot why he had come in at all. Nothing exploded inside him, no beautiful revelation occurred. His brain, accustomed to quickly sorting information and finding an explanation for everything that happened, simply refused to accept the data it had received.

It was her face.

Seven hundred years of life, which he usually perceived as a long sequence of separate periods, suddenly compressed into a few seconds.

He blinked. She could not be here. Of course she could not.

Christian knew too well how the world worked. People look alike. They have the same features, the same voices, the same gestures. Somewhere right now, there was a woman who looked like a hundred other women. It meant nothing.

He tried to convince himself of this and found that for the first time in a very long while, he had absolutely nothing to say to himself.

His fingers adjusted his shirt cuff on their own. He blinked, and the brown contact lenses over his red eyes started to sting. Then he looked at her again. No certainty, no rational explanation. The book bar was located on the ground floor of an old Prague building where, judging by the facade, there used to be some kind of office, but now they sold books, poured wine, and held evenings for people who liked to discuss literature with an expression as if the fate of civilization depended on it.

Christian came here because of an old book he was supposed to pick up from a collector acquaintance, but the man was already almost half an hour late. All that remained was to sit, drink wine, and watch the visitors. Students with laptops, aspiring writers, a woman in a leather jacket who checked her phone every few minutes, a man around fifty with a beard and the expression of someone who desperately wanted to be considered an intellectual.

A television hung above the bar. The sound was almost off, but the picture was clear enough, and Christian glanced at the screen from time to time. When snow covered forest and Edward Cullen's pale face appeared, he gave a barely noticeable smirk. Of course. "Twilight". Humanity had survived two world wars, the moon landing, the internet, a pandemic, artificial intelligence, and now still watched with pleasure as two teenagers painfully figured out who loved whom more.

Christian could not say he hated vampire movies. On the contrary, he watched them with enjoyment, especially when the screenwriters started explaining rules with great confidence that had never existed in reality. Over the past few years, he had watched "The Vampire Diaries", "True Blood", "Twilight", and God knows how many other similar things. Sometimes he came across TikTok videos with millions of views where people discussed how to recognize a vampire by their behavior, what a real vampire boyfriend would look like, or why a certain actor was the "ideal vampire". Christian saved some of these clips. Not because they were good. It was just that sometimes human confidence in their own fantasy was remarkably entertaining.

He looked at the screen again, then shifted his gaze to the room and saw her.

At first, nothing special happened. A woman among a dozen other people, nothing more. Christian was about to look away when his gaze, for some reason, returned. Then he stopped moving. The glass remained in his hand, his fingers resting on the crystal, but he no longer felt its temperature or the taste of the wine. In front of him was a face he had not seen for almost two centuries.

No red color that might attract attention, no obvious signs that the man across from the television was having a serious problem with reality. Only his fingers, which gripped the stem of the glass a little tighter than usual, and the habitual motion of adjusting his shirt cuff. He did this whenever he was annoyed. Right now he was not simply annoyed. He was as thrown off balance as he had allowed himself to be in the last few hundred years.

The most reasonable thought was to leave.

Christian could calmly stand up, take his coat, and walk outside. He could tell himself it was just a coincidence and in a few days return to his usual life. That would be rational, safe, and completely in his character. Instead, he looked at the screen, where Edward was suffering again with the face of a man in desperate need of proper therapy, and then he looked at her again.

He stood up.

He moved closer and sat down across from her, leaving enough space between them so it would not seem intrusive. Christian watched the television for a few seconds, as if the film was the reason for his sudden interest in the neighboring seat. Familiar faces appeared on the screen again, and he gave a barely noticeable shake of his head.

"I am Team Jacob, honestly. Edward is a bit too weird. He looks at her like he is either about to confess his love or run into the forest."

Christian smirked, still looking at the screen. "Though the most sane ones here are Charlie and Carlisle. Carlisle is great. Calm, polite, a doctor. By vampire standards, practically a saint."

He paused briefly, then finally turned his head toward her. His face remained calm, almost casual, although inside that same impossible sensation still lingered, one he could neither explain nor suppress. In seven hundred years, Christian had learned very well how to hide what was going on inside him. Right now, that habit was the only thing keeping him from asking a completely idiotic question about whether she remembered him.

He glanced at the television again and gave a slight smirk.

"Though the vampires themselves are portrayed rather strangely here. Would not you agree?"

Not because there was some mystical way to recognize reincarnation, but because human memory can be ridiculously specific. He recognized the shape of her face, the habit of tilting her head slightly when she read something on the go, and that expression of concentration he had once seen thousands of times. Then, of course, reason kicked in and reminded him of the obvious. This was not that woman. In front of him stood a completely different person, born many years after her death, with her own life, her own habits, and not a single memory of him.

Christian decided not to interfere. What could he even say to her? "Good day, you would not happen to remember how we lived in the nineteenth century?" It would sound like he should have stopped drinking wine in the evenings a long time ago. Besides, he knew too well how attempts to impose a past on someone who did not remember it usually ended. She had not asked him to appear in her life, so he left everything as it was. Sometimes he saw her in the city, noticed a camera in her hands, watched her film old facades or talk to elderly residents, and walked past. It was unpleasant, but tolerable.

The problem started when her project brought her directly to his door.

She came with a camera, a notebook, and very specific questions about the area, old buildings, and people who had lived on one street for decades.

For her, it was just strange historical material. For him, it was a normal part of a carefully maintained legend that had accidentally started to come apart at the seams.

But she did not stop.

She started looking up old records of the shop's owners, digging through city archives, comparing photographs, searching for mentions of surnames. Then documents appeared where the dates did not add up. A man with his face appeared in different places in different decades and then disappeared. Christian desperately wanted to believe that.

One evening, he was sitting in the shop after closing, sorting through another box of photographs, when he noticed a familiar picture among those she had already shown him. He picked it up by the edge with two fingers, looked at his own face, young by human standards and completely unchanged by vampire ones, and laughed quietly.

Seven hundred years of immortality.

And in the end, what could expose him was a budding documentary filmmaker with a camera and an archive that was too good.

A few days later, she came to the shop again. Christian spotted the folder under her arm even before she reached the counter. Printed photographs and copies of documents stuck out of it. On one of them, he immediately recognized himself. On another, too. On the third, there was a different city and a different name.

Christian closed the book he had been holding and looked at her calmly, without his usual smile. There was no point in pretending anymore. He could continue playing the part of a friendly antique shop owner, but they both already understood that this conversation had long ceased to be an ordinary interview.

"You have already figured out that something is wrong with me, have you not?"

A great way to end the evening with a police call. She remembered nothing, owed him nothing, and had every right to live this life however she wanted. Christian decided to leave everything as it was. Sometimes he saw her in the city, sometimes noticed her from afar, sometimes deliberately crossed to the other side of the street. It was unpleasant, but he handled unpleasantness well enough.

So that was how it was.

He looked at her and gradually understood something he had not wanted to understand all these years. The woman he had once loved was truly dead. She had not hidden inside a new body, had not waited for him somewhere in the future, had not preserved a secret connection with him. She was dead. In front of him sat a different woman, even if her face made his memory stubbornly reach back.

Christian took a sip of wine. It was good, but it tasted flat.

He was not jealous. At least, not in the way living people feel jealousy. He did not feel that this man had stolen something that belonged to him. She had never belonged to him, even then. And now even less so. If she was happy, that was her business. If she loved another person, all the more so.

The problem was that Christian saw her for the first time not as a ghost of the past, but as a living person in the present. She spoke differently. Moved differently. Laughed at different things. She looked at another man the way she had once looked at him, but it was no longer the same. Christian's memory tried to connect the two pictures, and they did not fit together at all.

The man rose from the table, apologized, and stepped away to take a call. Christian remained seated, looking at his own fingers. He could keep sitting here. That would be the most reasonable thing to do. Finish the wine, pay the bill, and go home. Tomorrow open the shop, arrange the books, answer the letters, live through another perfectly ordinary day.

Instead, he stood up.

Approaching closer, Christian stopped at her table. For the first time in two months, he was close enough to examine the familiar face without distance and without strangers passing between them. He felt something old, long buried, and, as he had thought, finally dead contract unpleasantly inside him.

Christian was silent for a few seconds. Then he gave a slight smirk, because the situation was so absurd that all that remained was to acknowledge it.
