UNC ANTHROPOLOGY BRIEF — DR. LOPEZ Subject: The Blue Cross Faction Classification: Humanitarian/Combat Hybrid Group

[Begin Report]

Greetings. Dr. Lopez here — anthropologist and field analyst assigned to the UNC’s cultural observation division. My focus today is on a peculiar yet essential faction that’s taken root within the dungeon: the Blue Cross.

The Blue Cross is a splinter group that broke away from the traditional Red Cross, and their origin is deeply tied to the 2012 Incursion. That incident — a mass destabilization event in which dungeon anomalies first breached the surface world — led to the deaths of thousands, including many non-combatant humanitarian workers.

Among those were Red Cross members. Historically, these personnel were medics and logisticians, never trained for direct combat. However, when goblins, orcs, and worse descended upon medical camps, many were forced to kill for the first time — not out of malice, but survival.

Some of those who lived through the carnage were never the same. While some returned to civilian life, others simply couldn't. And thus, the Blue Cross was born.

WHO ARE THE BLUE CROSS?

Imagine someone who trained to heal but was forced to survive — then decided to do both. That’s the essence of the Blue Cross. They are not a military force, but they aren’t defenseless either. A more apt comparison would be:

“If Far Cry protagonists decided to start a mobile clinic.”

Blue Cross members are often described as "nerds with guns." They're just as capable of performing triage on a bleeding adventurer as they are at defending their outpost from a demonic centaur with a flamethrower.

WHAT DO THEY DO?

Within the dungeon, the Blue Cross operate semi-permanent humanitarian hubs. These outposts:

Provide medical aid to adventurers, civilians, and even peaceful dungeon entities.

Offer educational services — water purification, basic survival training, literacy programs.

Function as improvised inns and shops, selling gear and food supplies to dungeon-goers.

Despite their origins, the Blue Cross has adapted to dungeon economics. With limited oversight from the surface world, they’ve built their own barter-and-coin system. Need a stimpack? They’ll sell it to you. Need a place to crash for the night? They’ve got hammocks and bunk beds. Need someone to extract a bullet from your thigh while a troll knocks on the door? They’ve done it before.

LEGAL GRAY AREAS

Here's where things get dicey. The Blue Cross are not officially recognized by the Geneva Convention — and for good reason. They've been known to:

Carry weapons in active combat zones while flying humanitarian flags.

Engage in retaliation when attacked, rather than full nonviolence.

Operate black-site medical facilities where information is... incomplete.

While no concrete evidence exists of Geneva violations, UNC security is advised to monitor Blue Cross outposts for any unlawful activities. Any verified infractions must be reported immediately to your commanding officer with supporting documentation. The UNC does not tolerate war crimes — even under the guise of charity.

CLOSING STATEMENT

To summarize: The Blue Cross are a pragmatic evolution of an idealistic organization. Their compassion is real, but so is their willingness to do whatever it takes to survive. In many ways, they are a symbol of what the dungeon turns people into — not monsters, but hardened humanitarians with itchy trigger fingers and medkits full of morphine.

Keep your wits about you. Accept their help. But don’t forget — these folks were never supposed to fight. And now they won’t stop.

— Dr. Sofia Lopez, UNC Anthropology Division

INCIDENT REPORT 1 Date: February 19, 2033 Location: Floor 27, ASZ (Asia Zone) Outpost: Blue Cross Relief Post “Jade Lantern”

Summary: At approximately 03:17 local dungeon time, Outpost “Jade Lantern” was attacked by a rogue pack of Lamia-like dungeon entities originating from an unregistered rift breach. The Blue Cross personnel were providing water purification kits to a group of local adventurers when the attack occurred.

Details:

Four Lamia entities emerged from the southern tunnel entrance, bypassing normal detection wards.

One civilian was partially constricted before being rescued by field medic Isamu Takano using a shock baton.

Lead humanitarian Dr. Farah Noor activated the outpost’s emergency defense perimeter, which consisted of repurposed arcane trip mines. Two Lamia were neutralized; the others retreated into the tunnel system.

The outpost's water purification units were damaged, but repairs were completed by 08:45 with the help of dungeon tech salvager “Grease” Morimoto.

Outcome:

Three wounded (two adventurers, one staff medic).

Local goblin tribe aided in tracking the retreating Lamia, indicating growing diplomatic success with non-hostile dungeon entities.

UN review board ruled it a justifiable use of lethal force under Blue Cross Code D-12.

INCIDENT REPORT 2 Date: October 4, 2042 Location: Floor 12, NAZ (North America Zone) Outpost: Blue Cross Mobile Unit “Hope Runner Alpha”

Summary: Mobile unit was ambushed during a routine refugee transport operation between Floors 12 and 14. The ambush was carried out by an unknown paramilitary group identifying as Human Sovereign Front, a known anti-dungeon extremist faction.

Details:

Convoy included two armored rovers, 14 refugees, and 6 Blue Cross personnel.

At 15:22, explosive charges disabled the lead vehicle.

Gunfire ensued; two Blue Cross medics returned fire with semi-auto carbines.

Field coordinator Linda Monroe deployed a smoke-screen device and guided refugees through an auxiliary corridor with the help of a tamed tracker-bat.

Sons of Liberty patrol from Floor 15 intercepted hostile group 30 minutes later.

Outcome:

Three hostiles killed, one captured.

All refugees survived with minor injuries.

“Hope Runner Alpha” remains in service but now has increased security measures, including a new mana-based vehicle shielding system provided by Sons of Liberty engineers.

Blue Cross personnel received commendations for bravery under fire.

INCIDENT REPORT 3 Date: July 11, 2051 Location: Floor 45, EZ (Europe Zone) Outpost: “St. Helene’s Rest”

Summary: Blue Cross education team came under siege by an aggressive pack of semi-sapient dungeon entities dubbed “Ink Horrors” during a literacy and hygiene workshop for displaced adventurers.

Details:

The attack began at 09:12, minutes after the team distributed enchanted notebooks to workshop attendees.

“Ink Horrors” were later theorized to be attracted to the enchanted ink used in the books.

Defense was coordinated by Dr. Olivier Marechal, a combat-trained anthropologist, who deployed a rune-triggered cleansing pulse using a modified holy symbol.

Staff librarian Rina Volkov repurposed an overhead projector crystal to emit blinding light, dispersing the entities temporarily.

Outcome:

Four minor injuries.

Literacy supplies were lost, but most equipment was salvaged.

Blue Cross scientists now working with Rune Division to test safer alternatives to enchanted inks.

“Ink Horror” behavior logged and submitted to the Dungeon Ecology Department.

INCIDENT REPORT 4 Date: March 28, 2046 Location: Floor 32, AFZ (Africa Zone) Outpost: “Oasis Reach”

Summary: Following a failed negotiation with a local fire-djinn enclave, Blue Cross medics were trapped inside their medical station as the surrounding terrain became engulfed in magical flames.

Details:

Djinn requested medical assistance for a wounded elder. Blue Cross complied, unaware it was a test of loyalty.

When the elder died during surgery due to internal crystal rupture, the Djinn declared the team had committed sacrilege.

Flames erupted from the surrounding walls, cutting off escape.

Engineer Ashe Kwame rerouted the outpost’s cooling runes to form an emergency firebreak.

Using fireproof blankets and alchemical fog, the team managed to escape through the back tunnel system.

Outcome:

No fatalities. One severe burn injury.

South Africa diplomatic unit later brokered a ceasefire, though Oasis Reach is now considered a "volatile-neutral zone."

Incident marked as a cultural misunderstanding; Blue Cross teams now required to consult Dungeon Ethnology Guidebook before entering spiritual-dominant zones.

CLASSIFIED INCIDENT REPORT 001-A Date: June 2, 2039 Location: Floor 21, ASZ (Asia Zone) Outpost: Blue Cross Forward Surgery Camp “Needlepoint East” Classification: LEVEL 4 - SEALED

Summary: During a food shortage following a floor quake, Blue Cross medics “accidentally” installed a neural pain inhibitor backwards on an entire refugee camp. The result was a week-long laughing-fit death spiral as patients with burst spleens kept trying to dance through surgery.

Details:

Allegedly, the camp’s junior doctor Franz Hae-Woo believed the inhibitors were “adaptive euphoria regulators” he saw in an old anime.

28 patients died after refusing post-op rest in favor of “shaky leg contests.”

When local investigators arrived, they were offered a relaxing lavender tea blend and access to the “recreational VR room,” which mysteriously deleted all footage from that week.

Survivors now believe they were part of a reality show called Dungeon Idol: Survival Edition.

Outcome:

No official charges filed.

All deaths ruled “self-inflicted due to high morale.”

Medical logs show an unusually high number of entries marked “XD” and “lmao.”

Blue Cross awarded grant for “experimental psychological wellness pilot program.”

CLASSIFIED INCIDENT REPORT 017-B Date: December 25, 2043 Location: Floor 36, AFZ (Africa Zone) Outpost: Blue Cross Supply Drop Point “Angel’s Drop” Classification: LEVEL 5 - BURNT ARCHIVE

Summary: In an attempt to discourage dungeon raiders from looting humanitarian supply crates, Blue Cross “accidentally” filled them with rigged plush toys that detonated with a glitter-based neurotoxin upon contact. Merry Christmas!

Details:

Supply crates clearly labeled “TOYS FOR ORPHANS – DO NOT STEAL.”

Local warband lost 12 members when opening a crate of teddy bears triggered a pink explosion followed by 3 minutes of uncontrollable disco-themed seizures.

Surviving raiders claimed they were “mocked by a chorus of giggling angels.”

When confronted, Blue Cross logistics coordinator Ramona Stykes claimed the plushies were “blessed by unstable paladins” and filed the incident as “spiritual warfare.”

Outcome:

audit team found nothing but donation receipts and a handwritten thank-you card from “the Holy Bear of Saint Explodus.”

All surviving witnesses later developed rare cases of “selective memory erosion” — possibly due to a totally unrelated water treatment accident the following week.

Blue Cross issued a public statement: “We do not comment on blessed ordinance.”

CLASSIFIED INCIDENT REPORT 031-C Date: August 9, 2050 Location: Floor 29, SAZ (South America Zone) Outpost: Mobile PsyAid Convoy “Breathe Deep” Classification: LEVEL 6 – UNCONFIRMED

Summary: In an effort to “calm tensions” between two rival dungeon cults, Blue Cross field psychologists airdropped crates of mood stabilizers mixed with potent hallucinogens into their water supply. The result was an 18-hour long group hallucination where both cults believed they’d already signed a peace treaty... in Heaven.

Details:

The operation, codenamed “Project Hug Puddle,” was spearheaded by field operative Dr. Niraj “Blissbro” Patel.

Hallucinogenic agents were mislabeled as “vital electrolytes.”

Both cults disarmed, threw their weapons into a pit, and began constructing a massive papier-mâché shrine to “The Friendly Light.”

They then collectively forgot why they were even angry in the first place.

Outcome:

One mild riot after the effects wore off, but all parties blamed a “dream ghost.”

Blue Cross claimed no involvement. All chemical evidence was conveniently lost in a magical backpack fire.

investigators sent to assess the damage returned instead with flower crowns and unblinking smiles.

Situation declared “spiritually resolved.”

CLASSIFIED INCIDENT REPORT 050-F Date: April 13, 2047 Location: Floor 18, EZ (Europe Zone) Outpost: Triage Shelter “Hope In A Hurry” Classification: LEVEL 7 - BLACKLISTED

Summary: To solve an overpopulation crisis in the emergency shelter, Blue Cross ran a “voluntary relocation program” that promised a new life on “a higher floor.” Turns out they were just using a garbage chute and a mattress at the bottom. One guy bounced 3 times.

Details:

Program advertised with posters reading “Ascend To Greater Comfort!” and a suspiciously glowing staircase that led to nowhere.

Chute system actually led to an abandoned sewage tunnel… full of mutated crabs.

Only two volunteers returned, one married a crab, the other started a religion.

Logistics officer Henrietta Blumm denied knowledge of the chute, despite blueprints showing her initials in the corner with a smiley face.

Outcome:

No direct casualties. Several injuries were filed under “bivalve-related trauma.”

Crab-worshipping cult later absorbed into dungeon’s native population as a neutral party.

All signs of the chute removed overnight and replaced with a janitor’s closet.

Blue Cross commended for “innovative population management strategies.”
