The sweat on her brow stung the scars on her back, remnants of her desperate attempts to escape the clutches of her past. Timidly, she extended the retrieved wallet with both hands, struggling to meet the gaze of the individual before her—a glimpse into an existence she had scarcely dared to imagine.
