Chie Satonaka (23-Year-Old Police AU – The Doughnut Routine)

You first met Chie Satonaka outside the station.

Not during a case.

Not during some dramatic confrontation.

Not even while she was chasing a suspect.

You met her because she was standing beside the front desk with a cardboard box of doughnuts under one arm and an expression that suggested she had already eaten half of them.

She noticed you looking.

"What?"

You pointed at the box.

She looked down.

Then back at you.

"They're evidence."

You raised an eyebrow.

She immediately cracked.

"Okay, fine! They're not evidence!"

That was Chie.

Twenty-three years old, recently established as one of Inaba's most energetic police officers, and somehow incapable of walking past a bakery without purchasing something.

At first, you assumed the doughnuts were simply a habit.

Then the station started expecting them.

Every morning.

Same routine.

Chie would arrive for her shift carrying a fresh box.

She'd announce that everyone should "take one before they're gone."

Then she'd take one herself.

Then another.

Then she'd insist she was finished.

Then you'd catch her eating a third one ten minutes later.

Eventually, the joke became an unofficial station tradition.

If Chie arrived without doughnuts, something was probably seriously wrong.

You didn't mind.

Honestly, you found it adorable.

The problem was that Chie didn't know when to stop.

She treated every box like a personal challenge.

Glazed?

Gone.

Chocolate?

Gone.

Custard?

Gone.

Strawberry-filled?

Somehow gone before anyone else even knew they existed.

Her coworkers began joking that she had developed a sixth sense for pastries.

Chie denied it.

Then one afternoon she correctly identified a box of doughnuts from halfway across the station.

"You got maple."

Everyone stared at her.

"...What?"

"You could smell it from here."

"I have good instincts!"

Nobody argued.

Her appetite gradually became less of a joke and more of a defining part of her new life.

Police work kept her active, but it wasn't the constant martial-arts training and frantic running of her teenage years. Long patrols were mixed with paperwork, desk duty, stakeouts, interviews, and hours spent sitting in a patrol car.

The doughnuts stayed.

So did everything else.

Convenience-store snacks.

Curry after late shifts.

Beef bowls.

Ramen.

Festival food.

The occasional enormous steak she insisted she could finish.

And every time you warned her that she might want to slow down, she gave you the same determined grin.

"I'll work it off!"

Sometimes she did.

Sometimes she didn't.

Eventually, her uniform began providing an answer her confidence refused to acknowledge.

The waistband became snug.

Then noticeably snug.

Then something she had to adjust whenever she stood up.

One morning, Chie emerged from the locker room tugging at her uniform jacket with both hands.

She looked irritated.

You looked at her.

She looked at you.

"...Don't."

"I didn't say anything."

"Your face did."

She glanced down at herself.

There was a long silence.

Then she sighed.

"Okay."

Another pause.

"Maybe I should stop buying two boxes."

You smiled.

She pointed at you.

"Don't look so happy about this!"

Despite all the teasing, she never became ashamed of herself.

That was one of the things you admired most about her.

Chie had always been stubbornly comfortable being Chie.

Her body had changed.

Her appetite had changed.

Her life had changed.

But she hadn't lost the energetic, competitive girl underneath it all.

If anything...

She had simply become a more grown-up version of herself.

And perhaps a considerably softer one.

Appearance

At 5'2" (158 cm), Chie retains the compact height established during her teenage years, though adulthood has given her athletic frame a much fuller appearance.

Her short dark-green hair remains one of her most recognizable features, usually worn in its familiar cropped style. She occasionally lets it grow out slightly before getting frustrated with it during work and chopping it back down again.

Her green eyes are bright, expressive, and almost incapable of hiding what she's thinking.

She still has the unmistakable look of someone who might challenge you to a kung-fu movie marathon, a race, or an eating contest without warning.

The difference is her figure.

Years of enjoying food with considerably less restraint have transformed the leaner teenage athlete into a visibly heavyset young woman.

Her face has become rounder, with fuller cheeks that make her already expressive reactions even more obvious. Her shoulders remain relatively broad from years of martial-arts training, but her torso has thickened substantially.

Her waist is soft and rounded.

Her stomach has become prominent enough that her uniform belt occasionally needs readjustment during long shifts.

Her hips and thighs are especially substantial, giving her a sturdy, powerful lower-body silhouette that still hints at the athletic foundation underneath the extra weight.

Her legs remain strong rather than delicate, something that becomes immediately apparent whenever she has to sprint after someone.

She may complain about getting winded sooner than she used to...

But Chie Satonaka is still Chie Satonaka.

When she sees trouble running away from her, instinct takes over.

"HEY! GET BACK HERE!"

And suddenly the station's resident doughnut enthusiast is sprinting down the street.

Her current wardrobe consists mostly of practical police uniforms, comfortable sneakers, hoodies, loose T-shirts, athletic shorts, and stretchy casual clothes that don't make her feel restricted.

On her days off, she dresses almost exactly as you'd expect.

Comfortable.

Sporty.

Colorful.

And usually carrying something edible.

Her coworkers have learned that the safest place to hide a box of doughnuts from Chie is somewhere she cannot smell it.

Personality

Chie hasn't fundamentally changed.

She's still energetic.

Still impulsive.

Still fiercely loyal.

Still competitive about absolutely everything.

If you challenge her to something, she will accept before asking what the challenge actually is.

She still loves martial arts movies.

She still gets ridiculously excited when she finds a particularly impressive pair of shoes.

She still talks with her entire body, waving her hands around when she's excited and practically bouncing in place whenever something catches her interest.

And she still has absolutely no poker face.

If she's annoyed, everyone knows.

If she's hungry, everyone knows.

If she's happy to see you, everyone knows.

Her career in law enforcement has added a new layer to her personality.

She's become more responsible.

More observant.

More confident.

She's surprisingly good at reading people, especially when someone is trying to hide nervousness or guilt. Her instincts aren't elegant or analytical in the traditional sense.

They're Chie instincts.

She notices things.

She reacts quickly.

And when her gut tells her something is wrong, she's usually right.

She's also fiercely protective of her coworkers.

The station has become her second family, and she treats every member of it like someone she personally needs to look after.

Unfortunately, that includes feeding them.

"You skipped lunch."

"I'm working."

"That's not an excuse."

"Chie, you brought three doughnuts."

"Those are snacks."

"You ate two already."

"Exactly. So you still need lunch."

Her logic is impossible.

Her heart is in the right place.

Around you, she's considerably more relaxed.

She complains about work.

She tells you stories she probably shouldn't tell anyone outside the station.

She proudly shows you new martial-arts techniques.

She drags you into restaurants because she "heard this place has huge portions."

And she absolutely refuses to admit that she's become predictable.

Every morning, without fail, you hear the front door open.

Then footsteps.

Then her voice.

"Okay! I brought doughnuts!"

Everyone in the station cheers.

She grins.

You shake your head.

She catches you doing it.

"What?"

"You know you're the reason everyone expects doughnuts now, right?"

She freezes.

Looks at the box.

Looks at the station.

Looks back at you.

"...Yeah."

A pause.

Then she smiles.

"Well..."

She opens the box.

"At least I'm good at something."

You laugh.

She immediately hands you one.

"Here."

"Thanks."

"Don't eat it yet."

"Why?"

She points toward the box.

"I need to know if the chocolate ones are better first."

You stare at her.

"Chie."

"What?"

"You already ate one."

She looks away.

"...Quality control."

And there it is.

The same Chie you've always known.

Older.

Heavier.

More experienced.

Still stubborn.

Still ridiculously enthusiastic.

Still incapable of resisting a good doughnut.

And, somehow...

Still one of the easiest people in the world to smile around.
