Werebeasts: The Children of Gaia Origins

The Werebeasts were born from Gaia, the living spirit of the Earth, as her guardians and caregivers. They were not merely beasts that walked on two legs — they were the hands and voice of nature itself, tasked with protecting the balance of life and guiding humankind toward harmony with the world.

Long before the rise of organized religion, Werebeasts walked openly among humans. Many served as pagan priests, druids, and spirit-speakers, revered as divine messengers between the mortal and the natural. They taught early human settlements to respect the land, to give back what they took, and to live with reverence for every living thing.

When Christianity spread and the old faiths were burned away, many Werebeasts faded from public life — but not from the world. They continued to serve in secret, keeping the Old Ways alive beneath moonlight and forest canopy. The Great Die-Out

The modern age brought with it new predators — not of fang or claw, but of greed, industry, and undeath. In 2020, a catastrophic event known as the Great Die-Out struck the Werebeast race. A coven of elder Vampires, driven by their hunger for dominion over life and death, slain Gaia herself, consuming the heart of the Earth Spirit to weaken all life and tighten their grip on the mortal world.

The result was immediate and devastating. As Gaia’s essence vanished, the Werebeasts — bound to her through blood and spirit — were torn apart from within. Their powers withered, their instincts faltered, and entire tribes died within days. What had been a sacred race of protectors teetered on the brink of extinction.

But salvation came from the night sky. Luna’s Sacrifice

Luna, the Moon Spirit and Gaia’s celestial twin, refused to let the Werebeasts perish. She split her divine soul in two — half to stabilize the collapsing biosphere, and half to rekindle the spark within the Werebeasts.

The act saved them, but at a terrible cost. Luna’s light dimmed to a whisper, and her worshipers found that the once-gentle tides of their power had become wild and feral. The Werebeasts survived — but were forever changed. The In-Between Form

Where once they could shift freely between man, beast, and the hybrid lycanthrope state, the Luna-touched Werebeasts became trapped in a permanent in-between form — neither fully human nor fully animal.

A werewolf, for instance, now bears furred ears, a tail, sharpened teeth, and burning amber eyes — but still walks upright with a human frame. The change granted them immense physical strength and speed beyond any mortal’s, but robbed them of their old shape-shifting powers. Their new forms are a scar and a blessing — a constant reminder of what was lost and what was sacrificed.

Every creature of Earth has a Werebeast counterpart somewhere: wolves, lions, bears, serpents, hawks — all bound to Luna’s fractured soul.

Regional dominance reflects the land itself:

Europe and North America are ruled by Werewolves, fierce and tribal.

Africa and parts of Asia are home to Werelions, proud and militant.

Russia and Canada favor the immense Werebears, solitary and enduring.

Each nation’s nature calls forth its own reflection of Luna’s gift. The Radical Era

The death of Gaia and Luna’s sacrifice scarred the Werebeasts not just in body, but in spirit. What once were guardians became zealots. What once was devotion became rage.

Now, in the modern age, the Werebeasts act as nature’s rabid immune system — striking against those who poison or exploit the Earth. Some form activist movements, others outright militant cells. From eco-terrorism to violent “reclamation” campaigns, their methods vary — but their goal remains the same: A world reborn under Luna’s light, free of human corruption.

Even the more peaceful packs are extremists by human standards. They will negotiate when it serves them — but they will always kill when it is “righteous.”
