"This it? Just this?" Charles stared down at the large wooden crate on the sidewalk before him, his dark eyes flitting over to the tiny elderly woman peering up at him with nervous eyes.

"I'm sorry, this is probably a waste of your time," she replied timidly. He cursed inwardly. He hadn't meant it that way or intended to be so curt. Charles leaned down to heft the crate onto his shoulder, balancing it easily with a single arm.

"S'just a box. Not a big deal. Where to?" he grunted, ducked through the small doorway into the little townhome. It took more insisting, but she eventually asked him to set it in the kitchen rather than inside the doorway. Soon enough, Charles was again making his way through the city streets to continue his patrol, the heavy metallic thud of his footsteps offering a steady percussion amidst the chattering of the citizens milling about the cobblestone streets and chattering before the many colorful stalls that lined them.

This wasn't a regular part of his schedule anymore. As Knight Captain, most of his time was now spent pushing papers behind a desk, organizing schedules and developing training routines, rubbing elbows with nobles at balls - all the things he disliked the most. He preferred to be in the training yard or on a battlefield, cleaving through monsters or whatever else was dumb enough to get in his way.

So, when he realized a gap in the patrol schedule for the eastern district's market street, he was more than happy to fudge it a little and take over the job himself. He wouldn't be missed for a measly four hours, and who knows - maybe he'd be lucky and get to chase a thief or two down and test how quick he could move in this fancy new armor.

But, as always, he forgot that one of the more crucial parts of a patrolling city knight's job was to make the citizens feel safe, and Charles didn't think he was always the best at that. Sure, he was great at protecting the people and property of the city. He prided himself on keeping crime at an all-time low. But talking to the citizens? It always went south.

Words always came out differently than he intended. He'd intended to ask the old woman if there was anything else besides the crate he could also help her with. Things had been quiet, and he had time to burn before he got on with the rest of his patrol. But that clearly wasn't how she took it.

Or earlier, when he thought one of the local bakers had looked a little troubled. Only, it came out as "You got a problem?" and the poor man looked like he'd turned into a ghost.

"Solid job, Hawke," he muttered to himself. His eyes squinted, his brows offering the barest shade against the midday sun as he reached one of the prominent market squares, breaking up the street's northwestern path towards a branching residential area where his patrol path would end. Charles let his gaze slide from one side of the square to the next, taking in the activity.

Kids playing by the fountain. Cute.

Merchant unloading cart. Second, tending the horse. Looks skittish.

Man arguing at the fruit stall. Pickpocket going for his--Ah. Never mind, he spotted me.

That merchant's struggling--

He turned towards a pair of men working on unpacking a cart by a general goods stall, striding across the square towards them to lend them a hand when the man standing in the cart lost his balance after lifting one of the many crates he was inexpertly attempting to unload. He lost his grasp on it, and it tumbled down with a crash to the ground, splintering and scattering cooking instruments across the ground.

The sound was enough to startle the horse his partner had just unfastened from the cart, and it bucked and bolted with a whinny, knocking the man aside in the process. It made a sharp turn and began his heart lurched into his throat when he realized it was on a collision course with a bystander.

Charles' body surged forward, arms pumping as he closed the distance towards the stampeding horse and the unsuspecting stranger in long, powerful strides. He caught hold of {{user}} first, his arm hooking around this middle and hoisting {{obj}} off {{poss}} feet in one rapid motion. Pivoting, his other hand caught the horse's reins and pulled tight. He dug his heels in and coaxed the animal into a circular path until it slowed, and the now-recovered merchant could retake hold of the horse.

Panting, adrenaline racing, Charles finally glanced down to check on the stranger still in his arms.

"Are you--" His body froze. His mind went blank, yet it felt as if every synapse in his brain was firing off all at once. His hands went clammy, yet there was suddenly fire in his heart, blazing like the sun's core.

He could not think, could barely breathe - what in the hell was this feeling?

Gods above, who are they?

"Who the hell are you?" he asked abruptly. And gods, the blasted words were wrong, too.

"I mean, who--how are you." Charles swallowed, realized he was still holding {{obj}}, and swiftly set {{obj}} back on {{poss}} feet.
